IDW Brings Back Classic Sci-Fi

Thursday, August 28th, 2008--by Stephen Schleicher

image003.jpgIDW has announced it is reviving long out of print science fiction tales in its New Classics of the Fantastic line.  First up from the company will be the Hugo Award-winning Nightwings by Robert Silverberg.

Earth’s long descent into hopelessness and despair created a civilization divided into guilds. One such guild is the Watchers, charged with keeping vigilant watch over the heavens against the alien invasion prophecy has long expected. But in a moment of weakness one skeptical Watcher is distracted… and the attack begins!

Spared from destruction during the fateful invasion, the Watcher soon travels from the ancient city of “Roum” to find shelter in the other once-great cities of man. Along the way he uncovers the invader’s true intentions, how they are related to the downfall of mankind, and that release from these captors will come in the most unexpected form of all.

IDW series editor Clifford Meth says the New classics of the Fantastic line will continue to bring back more Hugo and Nebula Award winning books over the coming months.

I Hate Galaxy Girl

Tuesday, August 26th, 2008--by Stephen Schleicher

galaxygirl_cov01.jpgDon’t you just hate it when you have all the qualifications for a job, yet it goes to someone else?  That’s what happens to Renee Tempete, who should be the new Galaxy Girl, but instead the role goes to a hottie with no powers at all.  This leads to the three issue mini-series from Image Comics Shadowline imprint by Kat Cahill and Seth Damoose.

Based on skill alone, Renee Tempete should be the new Galaxy Girl. Instead, a buxom blonde with no actual powers holds the title. As events unfold, Renee struggles not only against monsters, criminals and giant robots, but also a society that desperately wants to keep her in her place.

“While I HATE GALAXY GIRL was originally Kat Cahill’s runner-up for our ‘Who Wants To Create a Super Heroine Contest’, Shadowline Editor Kris Simon and I loved the concept so much we had to put it on the fast track to becoming its own series,” Shadowline Publisher Jim Valentino said. “When Kat saw Seth’s upcoming work on BRAT-HALLA, she knew he was the perfect artist to capture the mood she was going for. We really can’t help but agree!”

I Hate Galaxy Girl #1 arrives in November with a cover price of $3.50.

Shadowline to Release Ted McKeever Collection

Monday, August 11th, 2008--by Stephen Schleicher

transit_cov.jpgShadowline, an imprint of Image Comics, has announced it will release 20 years of Ted McKeever’s work beginning this October with his first collection Transit.

“To think after 20 years that I would be returning to TRANSIT is almost abstractly absurd,” said McKeever in a prepared statement. “TRANSIT had become my personal holy grail, but now, with this collected hardcover edition, I can roam free of it’s gaping wailing and allow it to scab over while I move on to new roads.”

Following Transit, Shadowline will release Eddy Current and Metropol.

Each edition will feature the definitive versions of McKeever’s vision, including all the original covers, unused art and TRANSIT’s never-before-seen ending. These graphic novels consist of McKeever’s inter-connected magnum opus in his world of tomorrow - from industrial wastelands torn by war, cities on the verge of self-destruction and one of the most twisted takes on superheroics to ever grace the comics medium.

The hardcover edition will arrive on October 1, 2008 for $24.99.

Who is Cheryl Blossom’s New Boyfriend?

Tuesday, July 29th, 2008--by Stephen Schleicher

bvdd165.jpgFans of Archie Comics have cast their vote to select Cheryl Blossom’s new boyfriend, and the results are in.  For the last three issues of Betty & Veronica Double Digest, Cheryl has gone on a date with one of the fellows who stepped up to the challenge.

With each new issue, Cheryl went on another date… and each date proved to have its own special challenge!  Cheryl nearly ran out of breath trying to keep up with Austin, the hunky fitness fanatic.  She did all she could to avoid pratfalls with Brandon, the klutzy computer genius.  She tried to avoid cooking up trouble with George, the master chef.

While Archie won’t let us in on who the winner is right now, the company says we can all find out in Betty and Vronica Double Digest #165, where the winner is revealed on October 22, 2008.
