Or - “Lethal Force From A Green Lantern Seems Like A Contradiction…”

I’ve mentioned in previous coverage of the Sinestro Corp War that I think the Guardians of the Universe may be making a mistake in releasing the ‘No Lethal Force’ directive on the GLC’s power rings. Yes, it’s a hoary old cliche, and yes, the Corps is facing the most deadly threat of their history, but I’m honestly troubled by Green Lanterns becoming killers. Of course, the Sinestro Corps is bringing the pain on a global scale, and they’re shooting to kill, but isn’t giving GLC members additional power what put Sinestro on this path in the first place?

In its latest press release, DC Comics has announced a whole lotta comics going back to press. Among them are Green Lantern 323, Tales of the Sinestro Corps: Parallax #1, Birds of Prey: Between Dark and Dawn TP, Planetary: Crossing Worlds TP, and Supergirl: Power TP.

“It’s really gratifying to have readers respond to the PARALLAX Special this way, because we set out to do something different with it,” says writer Ron Marz. “The Sinestro Corps War storyline has been full of slam-bang, widescreen action, so we wanted the Parallax chapter to be a change of pace — more of a psychological story that gives the audience a look inside Kyle’s mind. It’s great to be part of an epic that’s worthy of the term.”

Unfortunately, the Trick ‘R Treat miniseries is being postponed and will be resolicited at a later date. My guess this is a Halloween themed series that was originally scheduled for October. Doesn’t make sense to offer it in November or December, so I expect we will see this next year.

The company also sent along th latest Sinestro Corps War schedule and a clarification to one of the titles in the series. You can see all that after the jump.

Booster v. Sinestro

Time travel adventures are going to be a pretty hot item over the next couple of years. Legion of Super-heroes are bouncing all around time, Journeyman is scoring high on NBC, and Booster Gold and Rip Hunter are tripping through the time stream. The debut issue was an awesome smack in the face that made me want to follow the adventures of Rip, Booster, and Skeets. As I swim through my growing pile of issues not yet read, issue #2 floated to the surface. Did Geoff Johns and Jeff Katz hit another ball out of the ballpark? Will Blue Beetle be resurrected? And what is up with Supernova?

Or - “That Cover Looks Really Familiar…”

That right there is an “Oh, $#!+” moment… If you were around in 1985-1986, you may remember the sheer scope and breathtaking change that the original Crisis On Infinite Earths heralded. This was staid and steady DC here, the company known for the status quo, and infinite variations on a theme (Kryptonian renegades from the Phantom Zone! The Joker has committed crimes that start with J, then O, then K, but where will he strike next?) and even the shock value of Supergirl’s death could be one-upped by the sacrifice of a FOUNDING MEMBER OF THE JLA! The sight of the Anti-Monitor at the end of the Sinestro Corps Special literally gave me goosebumps, and I get the feeling that it’s only going to get worse…

Or - “I’ve Decided To End All Sentences With ‘In Accordance With The Prophecy…’ “

Today, I am reviewing Green Lantern Corps, in accordance with the prophecy. (Yeah, that’s not going to be funny for long… Better just drop it now.) When last we saw our verdant heroes, their largest member was under attack by Ranx, the sentient city and the Children of the White Lobe, a situation that mirrors a prophecy in the lost and suppressed last chapter of the Book of Oa. The Guardians, lacking as they do emotion, are unsure of how to proceed in a situation, but Ganthet, the friendly neighborhood blue voice of reason thinks it’s time to embrace emotion again. Hal Jordan is under attack by the Parallax-possessed Kyle Rayner, John Stewart and Guy Gardner are being held captive somewhere under the surface of Qward, and the Sinestros are still cutting a swath through Lanterns throughout the galaxy. Somebody has to do SOMETHING…

With the fans rapid for Sinestro Corps War, DC has announced three more sold out titles will be heading back to press.

• The GREEN LANTERN CORPS #14 Third Printing, “Sinestro Corps War” Part 3, features a recolored version of the original cover by Patrick Gleason & Prentis Rollins.
• The GREEN LANTERN #22 Second Printing, “Sinestro Corps War” Part 4, features a recolored version of the original cover by Ivan Reis & Oclair Albert.
• The GREEN LANTERN CORPS #15 Second Printing, “Sinestro Corps War” Part 5, features a pencils-only version of the cover art by Patrick Gleason.

All three issues are scheduled to arrive in stores on September 19.

DC Comics sent us a run down of all the Sinestro Corps War tie-in issues coming out in the next couple of months. If you missed out on the Green Lantern: Sinestro Corps Special #1, then you missed one hell of an issue. You also might have a hard time finding it in stores, as it has sold out three different times. DC announced it will be going back to press for a fourth printing, so it should be in your hands soon.

DC hasn’t announced what it will do with the other sold out issues.

Or - “Two Crossover Issues Involving The Color Green In A Row…”

It’s a Verdant Monday at Major Spoilers! When last we saw the Green Lantern Corps, Sinestro’s evil plan is proceeding as written, with the Guardians in disarray, Mogo under assault, John Stewart and Guy Gardner MIA, Kyle Rayner possessed by Parallax, and Ion under lock and key. The myriad Sinestro Corps members have been killing Lanterns left, right, and center leaving the Corps more and more thinly stretched. Hal Jordan has taken the fight directly to Qward, but even the man once called ‘Greatest Lantern of Them All’ may not be enough to pull this fight out of the fire…

Or - “War Is About More Than The Field Generals…”

It’s interesting to me that, for nearly the first time ever, we’re able to focus on Green Lantern action without having Hal or Kyle or Guy or John in the forefront. With Hal’s own title to cover Earth, Green Lantern Corps is able to show us another side of the Sinestro Corps conflict, an alien perspective using characters who’ve been around a lot longer than you might think. I find that (to me, at least) this portion of the war is as interesting (if not more so) than the more personal battles at stake on Oa, as it shows the sheer scope of the battle and the effects it has on the various Lanterns in the field. Since it IS a war story, those of you with more sensitive natures should probably know that some of the images are a bit harsh…

After reading Matthew’s review of Green Lantern: Sinestro Corps Special, you might be of the mind to rush to your local shop to grab a copy now so you can brace yourself for the oncoming unslaught of the Anti-Monitor.

DC Comics has announced the issue has completely sold out at retails stores. This is completely different than selling out at Diamond Comics distributors as it means you will be pressed to find this issue in stock.

However, hope is on the horizon. The company says it is going back to press for a second printing, and plan to have it in the story on July 18.

Or - “Sinestro Apparently Offers Great Benefits, Pension, And A Hefty Signing Bonus.”

When I picked up my comics this week, I asked my co-workers Jim and Jason (if the store were the Legion of Super-Heroes, and Tom Grice were Lightning Lad, they’d be the equivalent of Ultra Boy and Element Lad. [I'd probably be Star Boy, always around, but seldom the focus of the main story.]) about getting a copy of X-Men #200 to review, they both loudly told me that the REAL gem of the week was right here in Sinestro Corps. We’ve all seen the buildup to the Corps Wars in Green Lantern and GLC, but I couldn’t imagine what was so big that it would trump the shocking events of X-Men…

But this time, the guys… were RIGHT.

Or - “The First Meeting Of ‘The Awkward Silence Club’ Will Now Come To Order…”

That table looks quieter than the morning after a drunken road trip to Tijuana. “Wanna stop that WHISTLING??” Hal Jordan’s love life has never been simple, but the DCU’s designated stud muffin’s life just got even more complicated, with a super-powered woman wanting to go praying mantis on him (and I ain’t talkin’ kung fu, here) and a cadre of alien amazons with a grudge. Seems like some days, you just can’t keep the ladies away with a stick… luckily, he’s got a power ring.

Or - “A Naked Blonde Walks Into A Bar…”

“She’s got a mystical extraterrestrial artifact of infinite power under one arm, under the other she has a six-foot salami.” I honestly can’t decide whether I’m disappointed in Green Lantern or not right now. Certainly, they’ve lost a bit of momentum… Not so very long ago, in the wake of Geoff John’s and Ethan Van Sciver’s excellent “Rebirth” miniseries, Hal’s book was the DC’s second best selling title. Heck, GL even had enough momentum to spawn a second title, ‘Green Lantern Corps,’ but in March of this year, Hal’s book clocked in at #33 in overall sales. This certainly isn’t a bad showing, and he’s got it better than The Flash (#51) but not quite as good as Wonder Woman (#28, with the second or third solicitation of her long-delayed issue #5) but delays have certainly hurt this book’s momentum, and the amazing disappearing Ethan Van Sciver has been missed as well. This issue is one of those that seems to bear great portents for the future, but is it enough to keep GL on top?

Or - “Beware My Power… Making My Exes Go Crazy.”

Perhaps more than any other concept, Green Lantern illustrates the kind of changes that have befallen the comics industry since it’s inception back in the Golden Age. The original Green Lantern was Alan Scott, a train engineer who found a magic langern, a quintessentially Golden Age origin. As the influence of Superman waxed and waned, G.L. Scott became first INSANELY powerful, then depowered, then eventually stopped appearing in HIS OWN BOOK (replaced by Streak the Wonder Dog) as superheroes lost their lustre. One of the first concepts revived in the Silver Age, Green Lantern was reborn with a science fiction tilt, and was a mainstay of comics for years. When comics were suddenly, relevant, there was Green Lantern, crossing the country in a pickup with a liberal and a blue midget. Then, when everything went grim and gritty, our old Lantern (Hal Jordan) was tortured, reborn as a villain, and eventually died. At the time when every character was feeling the “Wolverine Factor,” Kyle Rayner was born as a new kind of G.L., a lone tough guy in a sea of lone tough guys, as someone misunderstood the uniqueness of the Corps concept. Now that nostalgia rules the roost, the Corps is back, the old Lantern is back (but not until AFTER Kyle got a huge following of his own. You gotta love the comics industry, folks…) This latest re-imagining has been plagued by delays, but it’s at least consistently interesting…
