A vile den of drugs and villainy

If I had to run down a list of movies that have a special place in my heart, Touchstone’s Who Framed Roger Rabbit would certainly be on the list.  I really fell in love with the idea of cartoon characters living side by side with humans, and when you throw in a big mystery and a song and dance number, how could you not like this movie?  Image Comics’ Shadowline imprint just released Archibald Chases the Dragon, and it brings back almost all of the memories from that crazy rabbit film.

Image’s Shadowline imprint has several trade paperbacks and books arriving in stores in March 2009, and Image has sent Major Spoilers the cover images and solicitation information.  The best item on the list (from my stand point) is Platinum Grit by Trudy Cooper and Danny Murphy.  It’s a collected web comic, but one that is very well put together.

If you are going to be surrounded by the undead, and only have a short time left, then there’s only one thing to do – solve the greatest mystery of your life.

ZOMBIE COP begins with police officer Joe Mundy being infected with the zombie plague and realizing he only has a short time to find who’s responsible before he’s fully taken over.  Written by award-winning novelist and comic book writer Jeff Mariotte with fully painted art by rising star Szymon Kudranski, ZOMBIE COP promises to be alternately humorous, horrific and tragic, while leaving you to question what it means to be human.

ZOMBIE COP!  It bears repeating – Zombie. Cop.

Zombie Cop arrives January 14, 2009 from Shadowline Comics.

hannibalgoestorome.jpg

After Hannibal’s defeat to the Romans, and then once again in DC’s Zuda Comics competition, Hannibal Goes to Rome is now making a campaign at Image Comics’ Shadowline website.

As the mercenary forces of Carthage move to halt an ever-expanding Roman Empire, only one man has the audacity and talent to command the charge. One man, unlike any other before or since in history, is capable of dismantling the Roman machine. One man, alone, is crazy enough to bring elephants over the Alps. That man is Hannibal Barca, and this is his story condensed into a sardonic comic unworthy of his name.

Told in a humorous (yet educational) manner, Hannibal Goes to Rome humanizes the inhumane actions that indelibly altered the course of civilization. More force than man, Hannibal pitted himself against Roman society, and very nearly swept it from history. Despite commanding over the mightiest slaughters in ancient warfare, he strove to maintain a measure of human dignity and respect against an enemy that perfected fascism.

The series is available now at Shadowline Comics.

Image Comics’ Shadowline imprint is continuing to expand online with a boost to its web comics division.

Shadowline’s continued diversity will be reflected in the web comics, as the line will vary from the science fiction of FINDER to the political intrigue of Len Kody & Jenny Frison’s CHICAGO: 1968 and even the oft-kilter superheroics of ACTION, OHIO by Neil Kleid and Paul Salvi. The lineup also currently includes newer titles like HANNIBAL GOES TO ROME, and the long-running YENNY and BRAT-HALLA. Future contributions include the web comic hit, PLATINUM GRIT by Trudy Cooper and Danny Murphy, and the upcoming LI’L DEPRESSED BOY featuring art by Jim Mahfood, Sam Kieth and more to come!

With this lineup of titles, it looks like Shadowline’s web comic presence will be strong.  Yenny, Brat-Halla, and Platinum Grit are all on my highly recommended list for web comic readers.

“While my first love comes in the traditional comics format, there’s no denying the massive amount of new ideas and talent coming from the online world,” said Shadowline Publisher Jim Valentino in a prepared statement. “It’s become a way for creators like PLATINUM GRIT’s Trudy Cooper to gain recognition or established names like FINDER’s Carla Speed McNeil to get their work to a wider audience. We’re thrilled to bring these creators together in one collective.”

galaxygirl_cov01.jpgDon’t you just hate it when you have all the qualifications for a job, yet it goes to someone else?  That’s what happens to Renee Tempete, who should be the new Galaxy Girl, but instead the role goes to a hottie with no powers at all.  This leads to the three issue mini-series from Image Comics Shadowline imprint by Kat Cahill and Seth Damoose.

Based on skill alone, Renee Tempete should be the new Galaxy Girl. Instead, a buxom blonde with no actual powers holds the title. As events unfold, Renee struggles not only against monsters, criminals and giant robots, but also a society that desperately wants to keep her in her place.

“While I HATE GALAXY GIRL was originally Kat Cahill’s runner-up for our ‘Who Wants To Create a Super Heroine Contest’, Shadowline Editor Kris Simon and I loved the concept so much we had to put it on the fast track to becoming its own series,” Shadowline Publisher Jim Valentino said. “When Kat saw Seth’s upcoming work on BRAT-HALLA, she knew he was the perfect artist to capture the mood she was going for. We really can’t help but agree!”

I Hate Galaxy Girl #1 arrives in November with a cover price of $3.50.

savage_cov01.jpgCheck out this awesome looking cover from the upcoming Image Comics Shadowline imprint Savage written by Steve Niles and Dan Wickline.  Mike Mayhew provides the art for the horror title that arrives in October.

“As a kid, I was always more drawn to horror comics, but I’ve never had the opportunity return to that as an adult,” said Mayhew. “SAVAGE is my chance to take everything I loved so much about the genre and run with it. The story Steve conceived with Dan hits every note I was hungry to hit and despite this being Jeff Frank’s debut, he knocks the script out of park with Dan’s help. Everyone involved knows and loves horror like nobody’s business.”

If the theory is monkeys in comics sell, then this one should do gangbusters.  Of course in this case, the monkey is Bigfoot as he/she/it(?) battles a clan of werewolves.  Just the concept alone makes you want to yell “Hellz yeah!”
