Of all the upcoming films for the holiday season, this is the one I’m looking forward to the most.

The Hollywood Reporter has Warner Bros. so excited about the upcoming Robert Downey Jr. Sherlock Holmes movie that has already green lit a sequel.  And while that news is an indicator the celebrated sleuth flick might do super good at the box office, the news that Brad Pitt is interested in playing the villain in the follow up movie should have everyone scrambling to lock schedules to get this film made.

Kieran and Michele Mulroney, the writers behind the now shelved “Justice League: Mortal”  project, have been brought on board to pen  the new movie.

While the second installment of the Iron Man series is in post production, word out of H’wood is that Robert Downey Jr. and Jon Favreau are set to team again in another movie.  This isn’t news about a third Iron Man (although I wouldn’t write that one off), but rather Platinum Studios Cowboys and Aliens movie adaptation.  Downey has been signed to star in the movie for a while, but now with Favreau on board as director, expect this movie to start moving through the Hollywood Machine pretty quickly.

The sci-fi Western explores what would happen if the traditional Old West enemies — cowboys and Native Americans — found the prairie attacked by aliens in mid-1800s Arizona.

And even though there is a pretty bad taste in everyone’s mouths about Platinum Studios (go check the archives) the company has been able to bring some pretty big names on board the project, including Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci, who wrote the relaunched Star Trek franchise movie, and that Transformers movie as well.

I think Sherlock Holmes has alwasy been in the back of my mind as a favored hero, and this latest trailer for the Robert Downey Jr. movie has sparked further interest in the sleuth.

It’s unfortunate it wasn’t RDJ’s Iron Man that trumped The Dark Knight this weekend, but rather Downey Jr. in blackface in Paramount’s Tropic Thunder.  The R-rated flick brought in an estimated $26 million over the weekend, while Christian Bale’s Dark Knight bringing in $16.8 million.  Coming in third was George Lucas’ Clone Wars animated flick with $15.5 million.

Don’t feel too bad about the Dark Knight, the cumulated box office is now over $470 million.

I’m sure by now everyone has read Robert Downey Jr.’s comments about the Dark Knight movie, and DC in general, but just in case, let’s shake that hornet’s nest again.

My whole thing is that that I saw ‘The Dark Knight’. I feel like I’m dumb because I feel like I don’t get how many things that are so smart. It’s like a Ferrari engine of storytelling and script writing and I’m like, ‘That’s not my idea of what I want to see in a movie.’ I loved ‘The Prestige’ but didn’t understand ‘The Dark Knight’. Didn’t get it, still can’t tell you what happened in the movie, what happened to the character and in the end they need him to be a bad guy. I’m like, ‘I get it. This is so high brow and so f—king smart, I clearly need a college education to understand this movie.’ You know what? Fuck DC comics. That’s all I have to say and that’s where I’m really coming from.

It’s a pretty sure bet, he won’t be in any DC related movies, hopefully his statement won’t affect his employ in any future Waner Bros. movies.

The Hollywood Reporter is reporting actor turned director/producer/writer Justin Theroux is in final negotiations with Marvel to script the second installment of the Iron Man franchise.  The first film had four writers; Mark Fergus & Hawk Ostby and Art Marcum & Matt Holloway.

If you are unsure of Theroux’s work, Tropic Thunder is coming out in August, which also stars Robert Downey, Jr.  Iron Man 2: Electric Boogaloo is scheduled to kick of the summer movie season in 2010.

Regardless of what you think of Platinum Studios, you have to admit, it does know how to market and spin itself to megabucks. Cowboys and Aliens, the sci-fi western that finally saw the light of day last year, was sold to Dreamworks to be turned into a major motion picture, after 10 years in on again off again development hell.

The Hollywood Reporter is reporting that Robert Downey Jr. is in negotiations to play the lead in the the flick.

“Cowboys & Aliens” derives from a graphic novel written by Fred Van Lente and Andrew Foley from an original idea by Rosenberg. The story centers on an Old West battle between the Apache and Western settlers, including a former Union Army gunslinger named Zeke Jackson (Downey), that is interrupted by a spaceship crashing into the prairie near Silver City, Ariz.

I had the opportunity to see the Iron Man movie last evening. The best part about this showing? It wasn’t sold out, wasn’t packed with noisy kids talking during the movie, and not a single cell phone went off during the flick. All in all, a great movie going experience.

But what of the movie itself? I have a few early thoughts after the jump.
