SDCC’08: Singer Fired Up Over Formula

Friday, July 25th, 2008--by Stephen Schleicher

freeformcov1.jpgBryan Singer’s Bad Hat Harry Productions has made several plays in the comic book marketplace, first snagging up Rob Liefeld’s Capeshooters, and now Radical Publishing’s Freedom Formula by Edmund Shern.

Freedom Formula is a five-issue mini-series that is very mecha-esque with exo-suits replacing fighter jets, and the racer who learns his bloodline has the power to change society.  Like Capeshooters, Singer will only produce this flick through his production company.

For Radicial, this is another feather in the cap of a week of major movie announcements.  With the hype over Freedom Formula, the company told Variety that it has plans to expand the comic book into interactive games and anime.

Radical Publishing Hercules Flick Announced

Wednesday, July 23rd, 2008--by Stephen Schleicher

01picon.jpg

Radical Publishing has been getting a lot of play this week; the small publisher has announced its five-issue  Hercules: Thracian Wars series is being turned into a feature film for Universal Pictures.  Today it was announced, Hancock’s Peter Berg will produce and direct the adaptation with Ryan Condal writing.

This announcement is really interesting as there are already two other movie studios producing Clash of the Titans-esqe movies set to debut within months of each other.  With the addition of Hercules, we could be seeing a release slate similar to the Alexander/Troy movie battle a few years ago.

SDCC’08: Steve Niles Signs At Radical Booth

Friday, July 18th, 2008--by Stephen Schleicher

Steve_Niles_ComicCon.jpg

radicalpublishinglogoI mentioned the Steve Niles signing in passing yesterday, but today the full blown release information has been released.  Niles will indeed be signing at the Radical Publishing booth (#2806) next week during the San Diego Comic-Con.  He will appear two times at the booth:  Friday 1:00-2:00 PM and again on Saturday from 2:30 - 3:30 PM with Arthur Suydam.

Steve Niles will also be part of Radical Publishing’s Comic-Con panel on Friday from 2:30 - 3:30 PM promoting his 48-page prestige format City of Dust.  You’ll also be able to snag a free promotional copy of the issue at the company booth.

“CITY OF DUST blew me away,” exclaimed Barry Levine, Radical Publishing’s President and Publisher. “I love the concept behind Niles’ dark, desperate, dystopian world and the characters that inhabit it.  Detective Philip Khrome is a conflicted soul as only Steve can deliver. Radical is going big with this, we’ve commissioned covers from artists like Arthur Suydam, Clint Langley and Lucio Parrillo to kick off the first issue and expect our fans to reap the benefits from our unique promotional events for this title. It all starts at Comic-Con with our preview book.  I’m so happy to see Steve on board, not only for signing, but to join the names of Jim Steranko and Ian Edginton for our Comic-Con panel.”

Keep checking out the site, because there’s going to be virtual tons of information about SDCC’08 coming out in the next two weeks.

John Woo to Direct Caliber

Thursday, July 17th, 2008--by Stephen Schleicher

caliberc.jpg

Rumors are floating around that John Woo will direct the Radical Comics adaptation of Caliber.  Of course it won’t be official until next week at the San Diego Comic-Con, but hey, now you know.  Others are poo-pooing the idea as Woo is in the middle of his three part Red Cliff films.

The Arthurian legend as retold in the American Old West, with all of its great symbolism, magic and spirit of adventure. The Knights of the Round Table are all gunslingers bound by a code of honor to protect the weak and defend the innocent until they are undone from within by their own moral corruption. In this tale, Caliber itself is a tattooed six-gun, given to Arthur by the Indians and imbued with supernatural power. The secret of the gun is that it is never loaded with bullets, but when a man with Justice on his side is holding it, it can fire. When it does, it fires Thunder itself and never misses.

If the announcement is made, it will more than likely be part of a three picture deal Lionsgate has made with Radical that also includes Johnny Depp’s Infinitum Nihil.

Radical Publishing Lands Bolton and Coker for Covers

Monday, June 2nd, 2008--by Stephen Schleicher

show_herc.jpg

Radical Publishing wanted to do something special for the covers of the third issues of Hercules and Caliber that hit stores in July. After a search, the company has announced British artist John Bolton will do a variant cover for Hercules: the Thracian War, with director/writer/artist Tomm Coker doing the cover for Caliber: First Canon of Justice.

“Getting John Bolton and Tomm Coker respectively for Hercules and Caliber couldn’t have been a better choice.” stated Barry Levine, Radical Publishing’s President and Publisher. “John knows a thing about a character such as Hercules, having done Robert E. Howard’s Kull the Barbarian for Marvel years ago, as well as his Marada, the She-Wolf he co-created with Chris Claremont. I really love how he brings across the glory of battle in this one scene. Tomm’s cover for Caliber is just beautiful. With Arthur on the run in the Telacoma winter countryside for issue #3, this cover brings an iconic look to Lance that fits Sam Sarkar’s story.”

Take the jump for a peek at the two covers and solicitation information.
