Scott Pilgrim, the Movie?

Wednesday, March 19th, 2008--by Stephen Schleicher

Is this Scott Pilgrim?

michaelcera.jpg

According to the Hollywood Reporter, Michael Cera is in final negotiations to play the lead in Scott Pilgrim’s Little Life based on Bryan Lee O’Malley.

“Life” tells the story of a young slacker (Cera) who meets the woman of his dreams but finds that he can only win her heart by battling and defeating her seven evil ex-boyfriends.

I think Cera would be a great Scott Pilgrim, and once all the roles are cast, Universal will begin production - probably in the fall.

Salt Water Taffy

Thursday, March 13th, 2008--by Stephen Schleicher

salt_water_taffy_01.jpgThis looks like it could be a fun title - there’s a guy fighting a giant crab on the cover.

Salt Water Taffy: The Seaside Adventures of Jack and Benny is an ongoing quarterly all-ages series to be released by Oni Press.

Jack and Benny are two young brothers on vacation in Chowder Bay, Maine for the entire summer. With no television or batteries for his Gameboy, Jack couldn’t be more bored. But when Benny, the youngest of the pair, spots a dark, indistinguishable shape creeping toward the ocean, the boys’ curiosity has them chasing one of Chowder Bay’s oldest legends. What exactly did Benny see? And what does it have to do with the recent rash of taffy thefts plaguing Dr. True’s sweet shop? Maybe the Putnam summer home won’t be as boring as the brothers feared! With surly old fisherman, sea monsters, warring seagulls, civil war ghosts, giant kleptomaniac eagles and mysteries around every corner–Chowder Bay may not just be the strangest place Jack and Benny have ever been to, it might be one of the strangest on Earth!

Fun! Salt Water Taffy: The Seaside Adventures of Jack and Benny will arrive May 7, 2008 for $5.95 (it’s 96 pages long).

Oni Press Gets Unwelcome Visitor

Thursday, September 20th, 2007--by Stephen Schleicher

Leave it to the small guys to bring the exciting news. While the folks at Oni were busy working on their latest stuff, a truck ran through their front window.

We heard the initial impact in the street and everyone got up to see. I think the consensus was, “uppp…. we got ourselves another one.” I’m glad we got up because just then, our wall got hit and glass flew everywhere. James, our editor-in-chief was about a foot away from where the truck hit.

Everyone is okay, and it sure makes for a good story.

McG to Direct Oni Press Title

Friday, August 10th, 2007--by Stephen Schleicher

maintenance_01_coverpicon.jpg

Love him or hate him, McG has taking his slick MTV style approach to directing and produced enough eye candy to keep one entertained for a few hours. Next up for McG is the Oni Press adaptation of Maintenance for Warner Bros.

Joe Ballarini is adapting the project, which follows the exploits of two janitors who work at Terrormax Inc., the world’s leading manufacturer and supplier of weapons and doomsday devices to supervillains. As comicbook’s conceit goes, if they’re not too busy cleaning up toxic spills and performing menial repairs on time machines, they just might save the world.

I love this quote from McG on the project, “Some of the films that made me want to become a director like ‘Back to the Future’ and ‘Raiders of the Lost Ark’ are based on action, comedy and ground-breaking special effects,” McG said. “It is my goal to make ‘Maintenance’ in the same tradition.”

If that is the case, this is going to be the kick ass movie of all time - Back to the Raiders of the Lost Future! Don’t make me cry like you did with Charlie’s Angels 2 McG. Don’t make me cry…

Tuesday, August 15th, 2006--by Stephen Schleicher

damned_01.jpgWhat if the mobs were run by demons? And what if instead of running numbers they were dealing in mortal souls? And what if there was one who didn’t like his lot in life? You’d have a pretty good story on your hands, thanks to The Damned from Oni Press.

The complete press release follows:

(Press Release) Oni Press is pleased to announce the October release of THE DAMNED - a new series by acclaimed horror writer Cullen Bunn & artist Brian Hurtt (QUEEN & COUNTRY, GOTHAM CENTRAL, HARD TIME).

During the prohibition era, gangsters grew rich on our nation’s vices, and rivalries between criminal organizations resulted in open warfare and gangland murders. But unknown to the common man, a more sinister power controlled the crime cartels, using greed, gluttony, lust, and other sins to fuel a much more lucrative trade: mortal souls.
