Here’s your roundup of DC Comics news filtering out of the first day of the New York Comic Con 2009.

Josh Howard and Image Comics have announced that Howard’s Dead@17 series is moving to Image. Dead@17 had previously been published with Viper Comics, but for some time now, the series hasn’t been showing up in the monthly previews.
Unfortunately, I’m not really in a position to comment on Viper’s issues, but it is my hope that eventually my other projects will follow Dead @ 17. But everything is still up in the air for the moment,” Howard said in an interview with Newsarama, “Most importantly, I just felt it was finally time to move on. Like you said, I had been there a while and I think I have built enough of a name for myself that it was time to see if I could swim with the big boys.”
This is an announcement that doesn’t come as a huge surprise, as it seems strange things are afoot at Viper Comics. For the last year or so, I’ve gotten a weird vibe from creators who were working with the company, even though I was told everything was fine. Dead@17 is one of the best known titles at Viper, and this move has to kick the company in the nards pretty hard. On the other hand, it’s great news for Image and for Josh Howard.
When the first issue is released under the Image banner, it will not be a reboot of the series. Image will print all the previous series in one volume for new readers.

Here’s your roundup of announcements and items revolving around Marvel on the first day of the New York Comic Con 2009.

Today at the New York Comic Con, Boom! Studios Editor-in-Chief Mark Waid, broke down what is coming from him in 2009.
If there was one panel I would wait in line for at the New York Comic Con it would be this one.

I expect we’ll see a few more these before the end of the day as more publishers release their schedules for this weekend’s New York Comic Con. Archie Comics sent us its signing schedule and panel lineup for the show.

Apparently this announcement was made ealier this week, but didn’t become aware of the date/month change for New York Comic Con 2010 until today. The show has announced the NYCC event is moving to October, while the show organizers plan a new show for Chicago.
So why October for NYCC? To put it bluntly, we really didn’t have any choice in the matter. We had been meeting with the Javits on and off for over a year trying to find acceptable dates, with room to grow, that we could keep for multiple years. We looked at everything; moving other Reed shows, running the con on Mothers Day even if there was anywhere else we could stage the con (Boston? Could we call it New York Style Con?). Finally, Javits came to us with an idea – October. They would move another show to make room for us and give us the ENTIRE upstairs of the building and the downstairs for panels. This was a big risk for us as we’ve never been in the fall, but after months of scheming, this was the only option we had to work with. After talking to our customers the general consensus was that we have built something of value, and if it happens in October then they will be there in October. And what we were facing was no New York Comic Con or NYCC in October, all signs seemed to point to the fall. I talked with the folks from other cons who this would disrupt before we announced it, and while I could do little more than give them the heads up, we did not want anyone to think we were doing this to deliberately cause difficulty for anyone, it was the best choice of no choices!
While I will probably never go to the NYCC, I support our comic convention overlords in this decision as October in New York sounds a lot more appealing than a cold, windy, and wet February.

Marvel has passed along its schedule for the New York Comic Con taking place this weekend at the Javits Center in NYC. There are a lot of things to see, and some of the panels and signing might be on your list.

My jealousy for those able to attend all the great comic book convention continues to grow whenever I see the panel, signing, and booth schedules for the various publishers. Image Comics has sent its rundown, and there are plenty of things for Image fans to do this weekend.
Throughout the convention the Image Comics booth will be home to signings galore, a convention exclusive cover of the superhero debut JERSEY GODS and an array of creators including Rob Liefeld (YOUNGBLOOD), Whilce Portacio (SPAWN), Frank Cho (LIBERTY MEADOWS), Richard Starkings (ELEPHANTMEN), Glen Brunswick (JERSEY GODS), Josh Williamson (JOHNNY MONSTER) and Vinny Navarette (DEAR DRACULA).

Boom! Studios has previously announced Mark Waid is Evil, then Mark Waid is Irredeemable, now the company is set to announce what is next for Mark Waid at the New York Comic Con ‘09 this weekend. Boom! has sent Major Spoilers its signing and panel schedule, that you can check out after the jump.

We’re going to get a lot of panel announcements and press releases about the New York Comic Con this week, and we want to make sure everyone knows what’s going on at the show. Frank Cho is a favorite artist of mine, so checking out his panel presented by Image Comics would be something high on my list.
Press Release Follows:
LIBERTY MEADOWS creator and NEW ULTIMATES illustrator Frank Cho will be the subject of a live interview and retrospective of his entire career at The New York Comic Con during the APES & BABES: THE FRANK CHO SPOTLIGHT, Saturday, February 7th at 5:30 PM in Room 1A06.

Radical Publishing will give away a special limited and numbered 3-D edition of its New York Comic-Con ashcan to convention-goers who attend its all-star preview panel at the show. Featuring a special 3-D cover and glasses, this rare edition, limited to 300 copies, is only available as a FREE gift to attendees of the panel, hosted by Rick Marshall of MTV Splash Page, on Saturday, February 7th at 5:15 p.m. in room 1A07.

“I know there are plenty of web comic artists who are able to subsist on the income they make from their website, but they aren’t making money from their comics; they’re making money from merchandise. Not to belittle web-only comic artists, but when their income is derived from t-shirts, it makes them salesmen first, artists second.”
– Neil Swaab
Oh man, talk about opening mouth and inserting foot. This lead to all sorts of reactions including this well thought out post by Jeph Jacques, which ultimately lead to Mr. Swaab issuing a public apology.
Oh and hey, those webcomic things have a bunch of panels at the New York Comic Con, featuring many of those webcomic gurus featured in the image above.
