Hellboy II Comes Out on Top

Monday, July 14th, 2008--by Stephen Schleicher

hellboyii.jpg

Hellboy II: The Golden Army came out on the top of the heap this weekend, bringing in an estimated $35.9 million at the box office.  I went to check the movie out on Friday, and while it was a very good movie, I still like the first Hellboy flick better.  The acting was great, the makeup and special effects superb, but for some reason Hellboy II felt a whole lot like the first Men in Black movie.  I think it had something to do with the background gags and music.

Speaking of Will Smith, Hancock slipped 47% from last week, but was still able to bring in $33 million.

Justice League by Gaslight

Thursday, February 14th, 2008--by Stephen Schleicher

steampunk_justice_league.JPG

The Gotham by Gaslight Batman has had a pretty good run since his original appearance by Mike Mignola and Brian Augustyn - it’s just too bad about getting turned into a creature of the night in the Countdown Arena. And while we’ve already seen the Steampunk Blue Beetle, what would the rest of the JLA look like?

The guy that runs Sillof’s Workshop has the answer with Gaslight Justice League. Stunningly beautiful mods borrowing parts from other figures along with custom molds the Gaslight Justice League is one that DC Direct or Mattel might want to pick up and make a full production run. I know I’d buy the complete set - especially if it included a build a figure Steampunk Metallo or Braniac.

Take the jump for the rest of the pics!

Goyer to Direct Vampire Flick

Friday, September 28th, 2007--by Stephen Schleicher

baltimorec.jpg

Looks like David Goyer has a lot of fingers in a lot of pots. Variety is reporting the author/screenwriter/director has been signed to direct Baltimore, or the Steadfast Tin Soldier and the Vampire, based on a graphic novel by Mike Mignola and Christopher Golden.

Just-published by Bantam, the graphic novel tells the story of the awakening of supreme evil on Earth. Lord Henry Baltimore is bitten by a demonic vampire bat on a WWI battlefield. The plague destroys his family, and Baltimore creates a team to hunt and fight the Red King, the embodiment of all evil.

Goyer is still set to direct the X-Men origin flick Magneto. The screenplay will be written by Mignola and Golden. There is no word on an expected release date for Baltimore.

Panel of the Week

Thursday, September 13th, 2007--by Stephen Schleicher

Where else are you going to find a lobster fighting a gorilla?

lobsterjohnson.jpg

From Lobster Johnson #1 by Mike Mignola and Jason Armstrong. I totally loved this issue that harkens back to the pulp adventures of Doc Savage, the Shadow, and Rex Steele: Nazi Smasher. Love it, love it, love it. And it isn’t a one shot, we’re getting five issues of Lobster Johnson goodness in The Iron Prometheus. Hopefully everyone will go out and buy this series so Mike and Dark Horse will make more.

And yes, I’m aware this panel is from last week, but I just got my “shipment” the other day, so there.  If everything goes as planned, I’ll have another from this week’s haul before the weekend.

B.P.R.D.: Killing Ground

Friday, March 30th, 2007--by Stephen Schleicher

darkhorse.gifThere are changes coming to the Bureau of Paranormal Research and Defense, but that isn’t necessarily a good thing.

Abe’s encounter in Indonesia has brought a new member to the Bureau, and Johann finds himself in possession of a very valuable commodity. The B.P.R.D. will need all of its resources to handle the sinister forces that have wormed their way into the heart of the Bureau itself, blurring the lines between the hunters and their prey!

The next chapter for the Bureau begins August 1.

Early Look at Hellboy Animated

Sunday, August 13th, 2006--by Stephen Schleicher

The Hellboy Animated blog has some really great images from the upcoming Sword of Stones DVD. Producer Tad Stones has some great insight on the project, including lots of images. Stones says he thinks there could be three or four direct-to-dvd Hellboy movies each year.

I think there’s plenty of room for three or four Hellboy movies a year. The more quality work starts coming out, the better for all of us. Cartoon Network has been a great partner for us on HELLBOY ANIMATED. They are HUGE fans of Hellboy comics and hope these movies really take off for them. But the people we deal with don’t make the overall decisions about what type of programming defines the network so we could be affected by future changes. It would be great to have a secure DVD market, separate from any broadcast or cable entity, where great animation can be aimed at whatever audience is appropriate for the subject matter and storyline.

Hellboy on Cartoon Network

Friday, August 11th, 2006--by Stephen Schleicher

hellboycover.jpgSet your TiVo for the Cartoon Network on October 28 to catch the Hellboy animated movie, Sword of Storms. Comics Continuum has a couple of quotes from supervising producer Tad Stones and Mike Mignola who say the movie shouldn’t be edit for television, but regardless the DVD release will be unedited.

Hellboy creator Mike Mignola noted that the animated universe stands on its own from the comic books or the live-action film.

“It’s not radically different,” Mignola said. “It’s recognizable, but it’s a little different, which I kind of like. It’s nice to keep them different.”

Go to Hellboy

Friday, July 21st, 2006--by Stephen Schleicher

hellboyanimated.jpgThe official Hellboy Animated Series website has launched. The desitination is the offical site for the animated series, which will debut on the Cartoon Network and DVD in February. Currently the site has wallpaper and buddy icon images for download as well as a brief synopsis on each of the two animated movies (Blood and Iron, and Sword of Storms). Looks like the main characters will be Hellboy (naturally), Abe Sapien, and Liz Sherman. The art style and preview trailer they have on the site look really good and the storylines should be well received.

If there is a downside to what they have done so far, it is not in the Mignola style like the forth coming Amazing Screw-on Head for the Sci Fi channel. Head over to the Hellboy Animated site and decide for yourself.
