Marvel announced Avengers Academy #1 by Christos Gage and Mike McKone today. The issue arrives in stores in June.
In case you missed it last night, here’s what you missed.

Director Marc Webb, who is heading up the new Spider-Man movie, did clear up some news about certain 500 Days of High School Twilight Musical actors being cast for the reboot (prequel?).
“We’re casting a wide net. That’s really all i can say at this point,” he said, reiterating that statement when asked if an actor like rumored contender Joseph Gordon-Levitt is too old for the part, or if the studio is looking for an unknown. “We’re casting a wide net.”
That’s good news for everyone all around, I think. Also Webb did confirm that he had talks with James Cameron about the best way to bring Spider-Man into 3D. My guess is we’ll hear more about the Spider-Man franchise in the coming weeks.
Looks pretty good to me. Watch all the way to the end to see a kick-ass costume change.
Can’t wait to see this on release day.
Or – “Named For The Roman God Martius, God Of War…”
Not to be confused with famed Martian general Marvin, whose computers are so complex and naughty… Traditionally, this month has signaled the beginning of the season of military campaigns, and also the time when college basketball generals lead their troops unto the field of battle. For me, working in small-market TV for as long as I did, it’s a month which signals mighty pains in the butt, which explains why this is technically the FEBRUARY edition of RFR. We apologize for the inconvenience… Better to just press on.
Or – “Anybody Up for Texas Twister: Disassembled? No? Anybody? Otter? Nobody? Bueller? Bueller?”

So, I’m a Matt Fraction fanboy. That’s cool… It even brought me to read the adventures of the X-Men again after years of cold turkey. (Joss’s run on ‘Astonishing’ doesn’t count.) But I didn’t jump on board this title when it launched a couple of years ago, no matter how many people told me it was awesome. I think I was still feeling the betrayal of ”Herr Gruppenfuhrer Stark: Dictator of SHIELD” and the use of Tony as the Marvel Universe’s autocratic de facto villain circa Civil War. (Remember when he punched out and depowered She-Hulk, a woman he’d been sleeping with the previous night?) It got worse when, as my associate Professor Wasserstein so succinctly put it, ‘the fascists won.’ But I have been reading this book for months now (the perks of running the back issue bins are few, but they’re totally awesome) and with this issue, I think I’m officially back in the corner of Ant’ny and his ferrous alter ego, monkey-looking helmet or not. We all expect that Iron Man’ll be back in full running order before Siege ends, but how will they manage to redeem Tony in the hearts and minds of those who can’t forgive Stark (read: Marvel Editoral) for the disastrous event of the last couple of years?

One of the main reasons Disney bought Marvel was to try and develop content that would appeal to the young male crowd. Disney had mentioned it wanted more Marvel content on its DisneyXD channel, and now it looks like we are seeing that part of the plan play out with the announcement of The Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes.
“The Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes” — Further aligning the strength of Marvel’s hugely popular characters and stories with the burgeoning Disney XD brand and global reach, an all-new animated series, “The Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes,” will debut in fall 2010 on Disney XD and DisneyXD.com. Beginning with the “Iron Man” and “Incredible Hulk” movies in 2008, the release of “Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes” follows Marvel’s overall “Avengers Assemble” strategy introducing the greatest heroes in the Marvel Universe through various content platforms, including the upcoming feature films “Iron Man 2″ in May of 2010, “Thor” in May of 2011 and “Captain America” in July of 2011, all building up to the Avengers theatrical film in 2012. Produced by Marvel Animation, the animated series features 52 episodes targeted at kids 9-14, starring Iron Man, Thor, Captain America, The Incredible Hulk, Giant Man and Wasp — who form the Avengers, a team assembled when no single hero’s powers can save the world. A 20-part “micro-series” that focuses on each hero’s backstory will roll out in fall 2010 on Disney XD, immediately followed by the series premiere on Disney XD in the U.S. and, shortly thereafter, around the world. Disney XD, the single largest distributor of Marvel content around the world, currently showcases approximately 20 hours of Marvel series (including “The Spectacular Spider-Man,” “Fantastic Four” and “Iron Man”) each week.
What does everyone think of this latest Avengers cartoon series? Are you going to find yourself watching more or less DisneyXD now?

If you were wondering when the next installment of the Wolverine movie franchise was going to get underway, you may only have to wait 9 more months. Showbiz 411 is reporting that the Hugh Jackman sequel is expected to begin filming in Japan in January 2011.
Based on a story cycle by Frank Miller and Chris Claremont, Wolverine’s adventures in martial arts will be a love story featuring a Japanese actress, I am told. “It’s a beautiful story,” says a source, “and will be very different than the first film.”
No word on director, and the site claims the script is different than most originally expected. For those of you who have read the original Wolverine in Japan story, will that play out well on the screen?
I’ve been a fan of Stuart Immonen for some time, and each time Marvel sends me one of these promo pieces, and knowing that Brian Michael Bendis is working with Immonen on this, I continue to be drawn to the series.

“N” looks spooky, as one would expect from Stephen King.
A bizarre arrangement of eight stones in Ackerman’s Field keeps a nightmare contained, but when–in the eye of an unfortunate beholder–the eight stones become seven, the fabric of what we think is real begins to shred, and an unbearable doom seizes the mind.
The four-issue mini-series is written by Marc Guggenheim, with art by Alex Maleev.

Want to know about the upcoming Avengers movie? Joe Quesada spills the beans for those who can’t wait.
Definition of “goose bumps.” Pressing enter and watching a screenplay entitled “AVENGERS” come out of my printer.
And there you go…
That’s twitter.com/JoeQuesada, folks.

In this issue: Stan is the Man, Speedy no bueno, Jean Gray dies..again, and the Dingo at your baby.
