Marvel Universe Online Gets the Axe

Tuesday, February 12th, 2008--by Stephen Schleicher

I love playing World of Warcraft.  I just wish I had more time to play it.  MMORPG are really fun and so emersive that you can detach from the real world very easily.  While I never got into City of Heroes - the super hero online game, I was interested in checking out Marvel’s attempt to break into this particular game market.

It’s too bad the game has been cancelled.

Marvel Universe Online (the heavily anticipated MMO based on the Marvel comic book universe) is officially dead, according to Shane Kim, the Corporate Vice President of Microsoft Game Studios.

Kim told MTV’s Stephen Totilo in an interview at the recent DICE show: “There’s basically one that’s successful and everything else wouldn’t meet our level or definition of commercial success. And then you have to look [and say]: ‘Can we change the business model for that?’”

So there you go.  With over 6 million players world wide, World of Warcraft is the big gorilla when it comes gaming.  What kind of message does that send when you decide to bow out if you can’t be the top game instead of being satisfied with a mediocre following?

Zeb Wells on the future of Heroes for Hire

Friday, December 8th, 2006--by Stephen Schleicher

HFH_8.jpgMarvel Comics has posted an interview with Civil War: Young Avengers & Runaways writer Zeb Wells, who is now taking the reins of the new Heroes for Hire.

My stories will build on the themes and character interactions from Jimmy and Justin’s run. I actually take over with issue #8, which is the final part of a three-part story, so I obviously want my stuff to jibe with what came before.  That said, we do start shaking things up fairly quickly, so current readers (and new ones!) are in for an exciting ride.

Sounds cool to me!
