IGN has posted the character posters for the upcoming Mark Millar Kick-Ass movie, and they look pretty… well, Kick-Ass!

Dave Lizewski doesn’t have superpowers, isn’t particularly strong or smart, and isn’t extraordinary in any way… aside from his desire to be a hero. Donning a scuba suit, a ski mask, and a pair of clubs, Dave hits the underworld hard in his new persona of Kick-Ass. Though not as hard — at first anyway — as they hit him when he’s severely beaten and hospitalized as a result of his first street fight. No one said being a hero was going to be easy…

When all four of the posters are joined together, they do indeed spell out Kick-Ass, which should be interesting to see on the wall in the more conservative areas of the country.  What am I saying, this movie probably won’t be picked up by those theater chains at all.

The movie is scheduled to open April 16, 2010.

But he won’t say which one.  Following his involvement with Wanted and Kick-Ass, Mark Millar came out on his forums that he is lining up his directorial debut.

But this is one of several big surprises planned for next year and you’ll hear a bit more about this in February when we start to release details. What is it? Who is it about? Well, that’s all a secret for now, but I learned a lot from Kick-Ass and love having the same creative freedom I have with comics when I work in cinema. I never want to be a studio bitch and go in there pitching for them to love me. The closest I came to this was a couple of calls regarding Superman, but pretty much none of my plans ever revealed as I didn’t like the idea of anyone nicking them.

Similarly, I don’t like the idea of asking for funding and justifying scenes with the money-men so I’m doing what Matthew Vaughn did with Kick-Ass and just making it outside the system with private investors. The financing is all secured and the movie stands or falls on how good I can make it, doing what Matthew did and just selling it once completed.

As you can imagine, I couldn’t be more excited. More as it happens, but this might just beat out War Heroes and American Jesus as my follow-ups to the Wanted and Kick-Ass movies. Have two other pictures about to go into development (and Wanted and Kick-Ass 2, of course), but I think you need to scare the Hell out of yourself every once in a while and something totally new like directing should do the trick.

So, the clock is ticking until February, when we’ll hear the answer.  Until then, the comment section is open for your comments and criticisms.

Pencil in April 16, 2010 as a day you’re going to be busy.  That’s the date Lionsgate is planning on releasing Matthew Vaughn’s  Kick-Ass movie adaptation.

Lionsgate acquired North American distrib rights to “Kick-Ass” shortly after Comic-Con. Pic, starring Nicolas Cage and Aaron Johnson, is based on the bestselling comic by Mark Millar and John Romita Jr. Storyline revolves around a young boy who inspires a subculture of wannabe superheroes who have no powers.

I’m sure after the government takes all my money on the 15th, I’ll be ready to kick some ass of my own, so this looks like a perfect release (and possible viral marketing campaign) for the film.

Word out of H’wood this morning is that Lionsgate Entertainment has picked up the domestic distribution rights to Matthew Vaughn’s Kick-Ass movie adaptation.  The Mark Millar and John Romita Jr. movie adaptation is still on track for a 2010 release to theaters.

With the Kick-Ass movie wrapped and waiting for its debut, word through Hollywood this morning has Matthew Vaughn and Mark Millar reteaming for a possible movie adaptation of Millar’s American Jesus.

The story centers on the return of Christ in the modern world, leading to a final confrontation with the Antichrist in a bid to save humanity.

The book, made with artist Peter Gross, originally appeared as a three-issue miniseries in 2006 with the title “Chosen.” When Millar, one of the top writers in the comics field, decided to continue the story as a trilogy of miniseries, the overarching title became “American Jesus.” The second installment is subtitled “The Resurrection” and is due out in the fall.

Vaughn is pretty busy with other film projects at the moment, so don’t expect the controversial subject matter film to go into production anytime soon.

Marvel is really making the buck off Mark Millar’s Kick-Ass series.  Seems like the individual issues have gone back to print so many times that I’ve lost count.

Perhaps Marvel has lost count too, as it has announced the Umpteenth Printing Variants for the first four issues.

I you wandered through your LCS this week, you may have seen Angelina Jolie looking back at you.  That’s because Top Cow has released the Wanted Movie Edition Trade Paperback to capitalize on the upcoming DVD release.

The WANTED MOVIE EDITION not only contains the hit comic story by Mark Millar and J.G. Jones, it also features a movie photo cover (see attached), interviews with the director and cast of the film, a character dossier, deleted scenes, a making-of-the-comic featurette and more.

I think some are going to be dissappointed when they purchase the trade and find out Jolie on the cover turns into Halle Berry on the inside.   If you haven’t read Wanted, do yourself a favor and pick it up, it is a great story.  If you’re basing your purchase on the movie, pick up the book as it is a totally different story.

Matthew Vaughn has announced that even though the studios have passed on making the adaptation of Mark Millar’s Kick-Ass, Vaughn says he is going to raise the $30 million himself to get the film into production.

Chloe Moretz has already been cast in the film, but the Hollywood Reporter has Superbad’s Christopher Mintz-Plasse in negotiations to play The Red Mist, the angry teen son of a mobster who tries to find uncover Kick-Ass’ identity.

Vaughn first brought the project to Sony, which distributed his “Layer Cake,” but the studio balked at the violence, which he refused to tone down. Several other studios expressed interest but demanded that the protagonists’ ages be upped. Vaughn, who most recently co-wrote and directed the international hit “Stardust,” now is going it alone.

Even though Vaughn says he’s going it alone, unless he’s setting up his own distribution company, he’s going to find it difficult to get a hard R or potentially NC-17 rated film into theaters.

Image Comics has announced Mark Millar and Tony Harris will be spanning the globe next couple of weeks, stopping at comic shops to sign copies of their sold out War Heroes series.  And by spanning the globe, I mean England and the U.S. and by next couple of weeks I mean August 9 – 23, 2008.

“The reaction Tony and I have received for WAR HEROES from fans and retailers alike has been phenomenal so we arranged this tour to say ‘thank you’ to as many of them as possible,” Millar said. “In fact, these trips may be the only way to get the book since the initial printing sold out instantly!”

Take the jump to see where they’ll be appearing.

warheroes_01.jpgImage Comics has announced Mark Millar’s War Heroes has sold out at the distributor level, prompting the company to go back to press.

“Much like KICK ASS, the response to WAR HEROES has taken a lot of people by surprise,” said Millar. “Stores all over are reporting sell outs and are reordering as many as possible, even as the initial supply is exhausted! Those fans from ULTIMATES are coming to WAR HEROES in droves so we’re putting even more copies out there! Retailers are advised to order up as our initial printing had a substantial overprint and that clearly wasn’t enough for the fans!”

The second printing will arrive in August for $2.99.

KickAss_MustHave_Cover.jpg

If you liked Mark Millar’s Wanted, then you will really get a kick out of Marvel’s Kick-Ass six issue mini-series, which takes a look at the question, “What would happen if someone tried to be a superhero in the real world?”  The series has already been picked up to be turned into a movie, and has sold out several times at the distributor level.  In order to get you ready for the next issue, Marvel is sending issues #1-3 back to print and collecting them in the Kick-Ass Must Have one-shot.

Best of all, the price point for three issues can’t be beat.  Kick-Ass Must Have one-shot will sell for $4.99 when it arrives in stores on September 3.  Hey, that’s my birtday, guess that’s another thing to add to the wish list.
