Major Spoilers Another Year Older! THANKS TO YOU!

Thursday, July 3rd, 2008--by Stephen Schleicher

majorspoilersbirthday2.jpg

Today is a day to celebrate - Major Spoilers turns two years old!  The last year has been a roller coaster of a ride with the addition of a little Major Spoilers-ite joining the family, legal wrangling with some poo-poo heads, the temporary hiatus of the site, and the huge return with more reviews, news, and a brand new podcast.

It’s been one hell of a year, and I have YOU to thank for it.

On the Next Major Spoilers Podcast - The Dark Knight Returns

Friday, June 6th, 2008--by Stephen Schleicher

darkknightpromo1.jpg

On the next Major Spoilers Podcast, we’re diving deep into the comic that, in 1986, made me sit up and go Hellz Yeah! That collected trade would be none other than Frank Miller’s Batman: The Dark Knight Returns.

If any comic has a claim to have truly reinvigorated the genre, then The Dark Knight Returns by Frank Miller–known also for his excellent Sin City series and his superb rendering of the blind superhero Daredevil–is probably the top contender. Batman represented all that was wrong in comics and Miller set himself a tough task taking on the camp crusader and turning this laughable, innocuous children’s cartoon character into a hero for our times. The great Alan Moore (V for Vendetta, Swamp Thing, the arguably peerless Watchmen) argued that only someone of Miller’s stature could have done this. Batman is a character known well beyond the confines of the comic world (as are his retinue) and so reinventing him, while keeping his limiting core essentials intact, was a huge task.Miller went far beyond the call of duty. The Dark Knight is a success on every level. Firstly it does keep the core elements of the Batman myth intact, with Robin, Alfred the butler, Commissioner Gordon, and the old roster of villains, present yet brilliantly subverted. Secondly the artwork is fantastic–detailed, sometimes claustrophobic, psychotic. Lastly it’s a great story: Gotham City is a hell on earth, street gangs roam but there are no heroes. Decay is ubiquitous. Where is a hero to save Gotham? It is 10 years since the last recorded sighting of the Batman. And things have got worse than ever. Bruce Wayne is close to being a broken man but something is keeping him sane: the need to see change and the belief that he can orchestrate some of that change. Batman is back. The Dark Knight has returned. Awesome.

We have really enjoyed reading your comments on the show, and I know there are thousands of you out there who have read this series. In the comment section below, share your thoughts. Then listen to the next Major Spoilers Podcast and see if we share your thoughts with the thousands of Major Spoilers Podcast listeners.

It’s sure to be a good time, but probably not two hours long like the last one.

Major Spoilers Podcast Interviews Dr. Peter Coogan

Tuesday, June 3rd, 2008--by Stephen Schleicher

superheroesfashioninterview.jpg

The Superheroes Fashion and Fantasy exhibit is currently running at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City (until September 1, 2008). Included in the exhibit are costumes created for motion pictures and television as well as famous fashion designers interpretation of the superhero genre.

In conjunction with the exhibit, the Met will have a one day conference about the show on June 22, featuring well known names like Alex Ross, The Dark Knight Executive Producer Michael Uslan, Paul Levitz, scholars and more.

This all-day event of lectures and panel discussions brings together leading international scholars, critics, and designers to discuss the world of costumes and comics. Themes include the appropriation of the uniform, the adaptation of superhero costumes for the screen, the creation of modern mythologies, and the role of the superhero as metaphor in contemporary society.

Coordinating this event is none other than Dr. Peter Coogan, director of the Institute for Comics Studies and co-founder and co-chair of the Comic Arts Conference. Major Spoilers sits down with Peter tonight on the Major Spoilers Podcast for an excellent one on one talking about superhero costumes in general, what works, what doesn’t work, and how difficult it is to make the jump from the comic page to the silver screen.

This is an excellent interview, and I had a great time talking with Peter about all things comics. The Major Spoilers Podcast will be live Wednesday morning.

More information about the Met event can be found here.
