Or – “Named For The Roman God Martius, God Of War…”

RFRBBALL.jpg

Not to be confused with famed Martian general Marvin, whose computers are so complex and naughty…  Traditionally, this month has signaled the beginning of the season of military campaigns, and also the time when college basketball generals lead their troops unto the field of battle.  For me, working in small-market TV for as long as I did, it’s a month which signals mighty pains in the butt, which explains why this is technically the FEBRUARY edition of RFR.  We apologize for the inconvenience…  Better to just press on.

Or – “Fifty Issue, Fifty Graves…”

JH1.jpg

I’m actually remarkably impressed at the longevity of this book in a climate where even superhero titles are tanking with regularity.  It’s most assuredly not just a “superhero with guns instead of capes” title, focusing on a protagonist who doesn’t even like HIMSELF, and a rotating cast of misfits, rogues and malcontents who don’t really like him either.  This issue marks an important milestone for Jonah Hex, both for the title and for the man himself…

Or – “Turkey Fact #12:  If You Leave A Turkey Out In The Rain, He’ll Drown…  Stupid Bird.”

Every year, I tell myself that I’m going to take it easy on Thanksgiving, and every year, I pretty much feel like a python who swallowed a wild boar.  Yesterday, I had three slices of pie, an enormous wedge of ham, and half a bag of crackers with cheese spread, and that was the day BEFORE the holiday feasting.  In order to help you digest YOUR Thanksgiving dinner, (Disclaimer: May not be valid in all areas!) we’ve got another line-up of things to be thankful for in the comics world…   To Infinity – And BEYOND!!!!!

The Warner Bros. Panel wrapped up a little while ago, and here’s our Rapid-Fire Roundup of the talking points.  The oddest part of these kinds of panels is there isn’t a whole lot of talking going on so much as it’s a chance for the studio to get its wares in front of fans.  There were some surprise guests, and yes, Megan Fox was there.

There’s also something about a Batman 3 movie or something…

It’s a pretty nice poster to promote the movie.  That guy in the front distracts from the central focus of attention though.

With the San Diego Comic-Con just around the corner, some of the weird from Hollywood is starting to surge to the forefront, as we present another installment of the Rapid Roundup of Tinsel Town Rumors.  Some might be true, some might be outright lies, but they are all entertaining… to someone… maybe not you… maybe that cute girl on the bus would be interested in your thoughts on the subject… or maybe not.  I don’t think looking at her and saying, “So what do you think about Cameron Diaz and the Green Hornet?” will get a dialogue started.

Nineteen sixty-four was the year that we were first introduced to the ‘Man With No Name’ and over the course of three movies the wise cracking, fast killing; laconic stranger redefined the basic archetype of the traditional cowboy. The anti-hero was all the rage at the time in mainstream crime noir cinema and Sergio Leone bravely decided to try and transfer that imagery over into the Western genre. He succeed in his task so well that it encouraged his leading actor to try his hand, in nineteen seventy-two, at directing his own version of the character in the movie ‘High Plains Drifter’. This particular movie persona was so noteworthy that Eastwood would return to it again and again, in differing forms over the subsequent period, cumulating in his Academy Award winning masterpiece of the western celluloid form; ‘Unforgiven’. It is no coincidence, that also in the year 1972, this new vaquero paradigm reality had become so accepted into the mainstream culture that even the D.C comics company who were traditionally very conservative about new concepts, decided to roll out an adaptation of their own and the world was introduced to Mr Jonah Hex.

Or – “Cut M’Self Shavin…”

Jonah Hex has long  been a favorite character of mine, even dating back to my first interactions with the DCU.  A great part of his appeal came from the character’s wry humor (when asked how he got his horrific scar, he replied “Toothpick slipped…”) and dry wit.  Far from being just a brutal thug (though he is kinda that, too) Jonah’s position as premiere gunslinger is well deserved.  Now, it looks like he’s havin’ a crossover event, and all his six-gun compadres are invited to ride along the open range…

Spoiler TV looks to have nabbed the first images of Josh Brolin in his complete Jonah Hex getup.  The look works, but it isn’t the turn away in horror reaction that we see in the comics.

Head over to the site for the full image, plus one.

I think it is generally assumed that anytime one says “Megan Fox” that “is Hot” is an automatic.  Movie Gab has grabbed a bunch of shots of Megan in her wild west hooker gear for the upcoming Jonah Hex movie.

Yes, you may get a towel now…

Yes, the Friday link baiting worked, as more people continue to discover Major Spoilers through their non-stop searching for all things Megan Fox.  Since we really need to keep this exploitation on topic (just like we did on Friday, right?), here’s a peek of Megan Fox on the set of Jonah Hex.  Granted we don’t know what she’s wearing under that bath robe, the saloon girl boots, garter, and choker, should give you some idea.  Fox plays Leila, a love interest for Josh Brolin’s Hex.

Oscar nominees Michael Shannon and Will Arnett have both signed up to appear in Warner Bros. adaptation of DC Comics’ Jonah Hex big screen feature.

Arnett will play a Union soldier who enlists Hex and is blindsided by the dirty fighting style of his enemies. The role is not inherently comic.

Shannon plays Doc Cross Williams, the bizarre ringleader of a brutal gladiator circus event. The character might appear in sequels.

Sequels already?  I know studios plan for three movie deals when starting any new property, but in recent years, the western has not been a big box office draw.  That being said, Josh Brolin, John Malkovich, and the ever so popular Megan Fox thrown into the mix could guarantee success before the film opens.

Jonah Hex starts production this month (April) in Lousiana.

The Hollywood Reporter has Transformers hottie Megan Fox signing up to co-star in two additional comic book adaptations.  First up is Jonah Hex, where she’ll star opposite Josh Brolin in the DC western.

In “Hex,” being directed by Jimmy Hayward, Fox will play Leila, a gun-wielding beauty and love interest of Hex (Brolin), a scarred bounty hunter tracking a voodoo practitioner (Malkovich) who wants to raise an army of undead to liberate the South.

Then there is the continuing talk of Fox playing the title character in Aspen Comics’ Fathom, created by Michael Turner.  Fox certainly has the build to play the aquatic hero, and considering she is helping to develop the property for film it sounds like her heart is in to this one.

Green_Lantern_Ring2.jpg

Well there’s no stopping the movie machine now.  Warner Bros has announced release dates for its Green Lantern and Jonah Hex movies.  Green Lantern is expected to arrive in theaters on December 17, 2010, just in time for the holiday season.  WB made the wise decision ot move the date toward the end of the year, as the summer mega movie season is already packed with Iron Man 2, Thor, and The Green Hornet (providing Gondry gets nailed down as director) .

What competition will GL face in its opening weekend?  Smurfs from Sony.  That’s going to be a tough sell as the little kids will want to see the fun loving three-apple tall imps, while adults will want to venture into superhero fare.  Oddly enough, it’s movies like the Smurfs that do incredibly well during the holidays, so there should be some concern that Green Lantern may not take the top spot in the box office.

If Warner Bros. is going to release Green Lantern during the Christmas holiday, that is probably the best date to do it, as Christmas day sees the release of Robert Downey Jr.’s Sherlock Holmes, the Alvin and the Chipmunks sequel, Disney’s Princess and the Frog, and Fox’s Tooth Fairy.

Jonah Hex, meanwhile, rides into theaters a couple of months earlier, on August 06, 2010.  Josh Brolin is still set to play the scarred western hero, with John Malkovich co-starring.

Since mum is the word on who is playing Green Lantern, who do you want to see weilding one of the most powerful weapson in the universe?  And will WB go the Thor route and find someone that is in their mid-twenties?
