Ain’t It Cool News has a very interesting rumor regarding a possible JLA movie.

As I was taking the Amtrak Surfliner down to San Diego for the ‘Con yesterday, I happened to look across the aisle and spotted a gentleman reading a script. It was some sort of JUSTICE LEAGUE project. Live or animated, I do not know.

I know that Superman, Batman, The Flash, Aquaman, and Jon Stewart all appear in the script.

Maxwell Lord, OMAC, and someone named Talia (Al Ghul?) all appear. One of the OMACs is referred to as “Beta”, so the story may involve the start of the OMAC project.

Well we know a JLA live action movie has been in the works, but the big hold up has been getting the other movies, like Flash and Wonder Woman, done first. If the studios are moving ahead with this, it is really good news – but it wouldn’t surprise me if the script the spy saw was mearly an animated movie.

Death of a New God

Last week readers got a few clues into the mystery of Jimmy Olsen, Mary Batson stumbled upon a repowered Black Adam, Stinky made the other Monitors angry, and Karate Kid continued to hang out in a JLA cell. So what becomes of our key characters this week?

I’ll say this for the new League, they’re a diverse lot. While still overwhelmingly Caucasian (even if you discount the pink skin of the non-human John Smith and Clark Kent), they’ve given two legacy heroes a chance to step up, righted one of the greatest wrongs of the Detroit-era League by re-inducting Vixen (and putting her back in her old costume), revitalized an old favorite in Red Tornado, finally given Black Lightning a spot at the big table, and have a female chairman, something that I think has previously only happened during the “JL America/Task Force/Extreme Justice” era. It’s an interesting start, with an interesting mix of heroes from all eras of the League, and I haven’t been this excited about a lineup since the days of the Maxwell Lord Justice League back in ‘87. So, where do Earth’s Mightiest Heroes stand after their first story arc?

With all the talk of a JLA movie, many are wondering if a Batman and Superman teamup on the silver screen would really work. The answer is YES! And the man to do it is Sandy Collora. This “fan film”/demo reel piece was done by Sandy several years ago, but it still holds up today. I wish Warner had considered both of the actors in this piece for Batman Begins and Superman Returns.

Whoa! Didn’t see this one coming. Warner Bros. has hired Kiernan and Michele Mulroney to write the script for the bigscreen team up of the Justice League of America. While I would expect the big guns to be in the movie, Warner did not disclose to Variety who would be the core team members. Please, oh please, oh please don’t do Justice League Detroit!

Now that the Batman and Superman film franchises have been revived, does the studio go after Christian Bale (”Batman Begins”) and Brandon Routh (”Superman Returns”) to star in a Justice League pic? Studio is also trying hard to bring Wonder Woman to the bigscreen.

To a large degree, casting will depend upon the story arc for the JLA feature and at what point in the superheroes’ lives the plot takes place.

Let me repeat: Please, oh please, oh please don’t do Justice League Detroit!

While I would be okay with movie based on the Giffen/Dematteis Justice League International (especially one that included Batman punching out Guy Gardner), the chances of getting Bale or Brandon Routh to sign on, or even getting Batman and Superman being central figures, seems rather slim. If you also couple the fact DC has killed off Blue Beetle, changed Booster Gold’s role in the DCU, plus the dramatic change of Captain Marvel (among others), having a great Justice League movie seems totally out of reach.

Perhaps it is just me, but while the Smallville “Justice” episode was good, I fear that is the blueprint for this movie.

Please, oh please, oh please don’t do Justice League Detroit!

So the BIG question is, “Who would you cast in a Justice League of America movie?” I’m sure there will be those who simply want The Big Seven, but if you could go Unlimited who would make that list?
