“I ♥ You, The Goddamn Batman!”

Yes, it’s true – I’ve not liked a single issue of Batman R.I.P.  but that doesn’t mean I don’t love Batman.  While the masses seem to swallow everything Grant Morrison has to offer in the pages of Batman, the better story can actually be found in the pages of All-Star Batman and Robin, something the masses seem to detest.  Yes, I know I’m the lone voice on both of these Batman fronts, but what’s a person to do?

Answer:  Love the Goddamn Batman!

As many of you saw this week, DC issued a recall of the Frank Miller/Jim Lee All-Star Batman and Robin issue, citing printing errors.  Any issues that may have “accidentally” reached the local comic shops were supposed to be destroyed.  The printing error in question had to do with a couple four letter words and the dark censor bar that just wasn’t dark enough to block out those words.

When you send out an announcement like that, two things are bound to happen; A) LCSes that want to make a fast buck are going to sell the issue for 10 times the cover price, and B) the offending errors are going to show up on the Interweb’s Net.

Yes, we were aware of what the words were earlier this week, but were waiting for the actual pages to surface.  You can see one of those panels after the jump.  Oh, and if you are under 18, don’t click that More link, because after all, we wouldn’t want you exposed to anything that might be offensive – although I’m pretty sure your walk/ride to school in the morning is filled with worse language than what is presented in this issue.

There isn’t anything better that I love than a good Batman story, and issue #9 of Batman and Robin the Boy Wonder has provided me with …

or – “I love you the goddamn Batman, you and your goddamn Batmobile”

The last time I reviewed All-Star Batman, it had been literally a year since the previous issue hit the stands. At the time I hated, Hated, HATED the title thinking Frank Miller had made a mockery of Batman, taken the money, and run away laughing. After a couple of months of serious contemplating, I’ve totally reversed my feelings on the goddamn Batman. Instead of being the worst title out there, I’m actually looking forward to each and every issue – even more so than what Morrison is doing on the Batman title proper. What caused the change of heart? No, it wasn’t a truck load of money from DC (although that would be nice), but rather a different perspective on what Miller is doing.

From Batman & Robin The Boy Wonder #7

Whatever you say, man. Whatever you say.

It’s a once in a lifetime chance to get your hands on an original page from Jeff Smith. Smith and others are donating art to the Comic Book Legal Defense fund to help pay for the growing court costs in the Gordon Lee Case.

In case you aren’t familiar with the case, Lee is a comic shop owner in Georgia who could go to jail for selling a comic that has a scene of Picasso walking around in the nude to a minor. Gordon claims he didn’t know the scene was in the book and has appologized, but that hasn’t stopped the sue happy family and the crazy state of Georgia from taking him to court.

The CBLDF has already spent $80,000 defending Gordon and expect to need another $20,000.

I don’t sell my original art, and I’ve never donated an interior story page to anything before, but this case against comics must not succeed. No one should go to jail for selling art.

Take the jump for the black and white image up for sale from Smith, as well as the open letter from Jim Lee who is calling for your help.

Jim Lee has been kind enough to give us a sneak peek at the next three covers to DC’s All Star Batman and Robin series. The pencils look great, and it looks like we’ll see more Black Canary and Batgirl before it is all done. According to Jim’s site, issue #5 SHOULD come out May 16, with issue #6 hitting stores July 25, and issue #7 arriving sometime in September.

Well hot damn! This is/was a series I had high hopes for, but to tell you the truth, before I read issue #5, I better reread the first four as I have completely forgotten what is going on.

Take the jump for the bigguns!
