This week on the Major Spoilers Podcast, the Major Spoilers Crew is taking a peek at the first arc of Ed Brubaker’s Immortal Iron Fist from Marvel Comics.

Amazon Description

Many years ago, in the mystical city of Kun’ Lun, young Danny Rand stared at a suit behind glass – the garb of the “Immortal Iron Fist” – and knew that he was destined to wear it. But where did this costume come from? Why did it wait for Danny all those years like a shadow of his future? The answer to those questions will stun both him and his readers, as Danny Rand leaps from the pages of his breakout hit in Daredevil to his own history-spanning kung-fu epic that will shatter every perception of what it means to be the Immortal Iron Fist! Brought to you by top-ten writer Ed Brubaker and breakout talent Matt Fraction (Punisher War Journal), with action-packed art by David Aja (Daredevil, Giant-Size Wolverine). Collects Immortal Iron Fist #1-6.

Daniel Rand has been through hell…  Beaten, isolated, the brand of the Iron Fist flensed from his skin, he has still somehow managed to mobilize and reunite his fellow weapons, only to find himself faced with ANOTHER Iron Fist, this one the first of his line.  Can the latest bearer of the Iron Fist overcome the original champion of K’un Lun?  Or is the book of the Iron Fist about to get a new chapter?

Daniel Rand,  the Iron Fist, and five of his fellow immortal weapons have breached the spaces between dimensions, and found the mysterious lost Eight City of Heaven, only to discover that even their superhuman combat skills and power up finishing moves aren’t enough to keep them from being imprisoned, tortured, and forced to fight over and over in ritual combat.  More surprising than that is Danny’s discovery that he is not the ONLY Iron Fist in captivity…  Intrigued?  Click and read on!

Or – “Wasn’t There Another Reviewer At Major Spoilers?  Some Old Dude?”

It’s a little known fact that the month of December contains space-time anomalies that keep you from ever completing anything on time.  Add to that a new paradigm at my office, wherein my team load has doubled and my patience halved, a tendency to want to spend time with my friends around the holidays, a scanner that works about half the time and my recent birthday, and I admit it…  I may have been neglecting my reviews.  Still, t’is nobler in the mind to beg forgiveness than it is to ask permission, so I’m back with a new batch of things you may have already read, but forgot to ask for my opinion on the first time.

Or – “FINISH HIM!!”

IF1.jpg

Seriously, wouldja just get it over with already?  I rave on and on about this every month, but not every story needs to be a six-issue arc to fill the inevitable trade paperback.  I’ve spoken with many people who figured that Iron Fist was done when the original revamping creative team left the book, but this new arc drew me in with an interesting hook on what Bru and Fraction set into motion.  But, has it overstayed it’s welcome?

Or – “Three Weeks Of Comics In Handy Bite-Sized Servings!”

A side-effect of reading as many comics as I do comes when, after a particulary heavy week of reads, you find all the stories kind of blurring together into one.  It makes for some pretty entertaining nightmares as well, like the one where Wonder Woman was guarding the galaxy against marauding zombies who wanted to shape-shift into teenagers and make out while simultaneously refitting all of our cars to fly and emit fire, and also giving our grandparents cyborg limbs that glow in the dark.  So, I got that going for me…  which is nice.

Brubaker and Fraction’s run on Iron Fist did what every relaunch really hopes to do: revitalize the character, revive interest in his stories, and add depth and versimilitude to the Iron Fist stories to date.  So much so that, when this new creative team was announced, pull list orders on the book (at Gatekeeper Hobbies, Huntoon and Gage, Topeka! Ask about our 70’s Vampirella black and whites!) fell by nearly half, and one of our more sardonic Spoilerites was heard to opine that the book will be cancelled within 18 issues.  Of course, it should be noted that some wits said that when they heard of the Iron Fist relaunch in the first place, and it took word of mouth to build the title up to where it was last issue.  Now, we’ve hit what Marvel and DC editorial love to call “a perfect jumping-on point for the title,” even though it seems that most of the readers I interact with either want to start with #1 or buy trade paperbacks.  Either way, it’s time to take a look at the new face of the Fist.

Check it. With all the fan films we’ve been running at Major Spoilers, one more won’t kill you.

Or maybe it will…

Or – “Swan Song, Anyone?”

So. I’m back.  Those of you who listen to the podcast may have heard my oblique references to having a swollen arm and generally whining about something or other.  The clinical diagnosis is “tendonitis,” which means that my left arm swells, and throbs, and basically makes life miserable, and fine motor work (like, say, typing?) has a tendency to cause agony.  I’m mostly over this bout, thanks for asking, just in time to go on a bravado run of reviewing unmatched by any man, woman, or energy being in a tiny scale model spaceship in recent memory.  Provided, of course, that I manage my pain.  In any case, my return to active duty coincides (in a general sense) with the end of Brubaker, Fraction and Aja’s run on Immortal Iron Fist.  Danny Rand has been through the fire over the last year and a half, and now he’s ready to change his life for the better.  The problem is fate, as always, has a surprise or two up her sleeve for our Daniel Rand-Kai…
