While browsing the Interwebs this morning I saw a post talking about the low box office performance of the Incredible Hulk. 2008 is certainly the year of comic book movies, and with the initial praise the film received, I had to check out the facts for myself.
While it wasn’t Indiana Jones, or even an Iron Man level take at the box office, the Incredible Hulk did walk away with the top movie this past weekend, taking home an estimated $54.5 million domestically. That’s a lot of green for the big fellow, and has many believing Marvel has gone two for two in its company owned movie franchise. Even thought the movie is number one, remember, Hulk did not bring in as much as last year’s Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer ($58 million) or as much as Ang Lee’s take on the Hulk that brought in $62.1 million in its opening weekend.
Still, if the Hulk can keep from dropping 50% or more next weekend, it is well on its way to breaking $100 million domestically next weekend.
If you went and saw the movie on opening day, then you probably have some thoughts on Marvel’s new Hulk movie. I’ll be seeing it this weekend, and the Major Spoilers Podcast Panel will be talking about it on the next show, and we want to include your thoughts and reactions to the flick.
Did Marvel hit another one out of the ballpark? Was it everything you expected, or did it fail to meet up to expectations?
As we previously reported, director Louis Leterrier said Captain America was to make a cameo appearance in the Hulk flick opening this weekend, but though the scene was filmed, and you will get to see it, it may not be in the theater.
So what’s the dealio? You’ll have to take the jump to find out for yourself.
Skaar: Son of Hulk #1 does arrive in stores today, but I’m going to bet if you take this birth certificate to your local Social Security Office (it’s one of those weird U.S. things that have a lot of promise, but will never pay off for my generation), I’m going to bet you get your butt hauled off to jail.
Before picking up Skaar: Son of Hulk #1, in stores today, you can read the events of Planet Hulk and World War Hulk for free. No, I’m not suggesting you hang around your LCS all day reading stuff for free, messing up the racks, and bending the precious, precious covers. Instead, I’m suggesting you head over to MDCU - that’s Marvel Digital Comics Unlimited - and red Hulk Saga online. Did I mention it is free?
The Hulk has been smashing his way through the Marvel Universe for years, but its time for a new generation to rise up. The Hulk’s son from the savage planet of Sakaar is all grown and ready to follow in his father’s footsteps and Marvel Digital Comics Unlimited has the exclusive all-new saga presenting the events that lead to the birth of Skaar in HULK SAGA, which can be read for free right now on Marvel.com!
Diamond Select Toys has announced the online retailer Big Bad Toy Store will be the exclusive distributor of the Marvel Select Red Hulk. While the sculpt is similar to the green golliath, the head change and paint job set this figure off from the rest.
Fresh from his debut in Hulk #1, this mysterious mayhem-making menace has just begun his assault on the Gamma-powered individuals of the Marvel Universe and he’s shown no signs of slowing! As with the upcoming Marvel Select Hulk figure, the Red Hulk stands approximately ten inches tall and features multiple points of articulation as well as a rubble-heavy base.
Pre-orders are being accepted now for the figure that will ship in the fall. The figure is a tad pricey at $24, but it also stands 10-inches high.
Check out this G4 Attack of the Show interview with Incredible Hulk director Luck Letterier, where he hints that we may see more than just a Captain America shield in the background.
Cool beans - you can bet I’ll stick around until way after the credits are over.
So far during the WWH crossover, we’ve seen Hulk fighting the United States army, the Avengers, the Fantastic Four, and successfully taken over the entire island of Manhattan. Nobody questions that his actions are justifiable to himself, and honestly, some of the people he’s put the hurting on richly deserved it (I’m lookin’ at you, Mr. Stark!) but we’ve seen edges of a darker path in his actions. Now that he’s gathered his enemies in one place, Hulk now has to make the decision indulging his basest urges for revenge and living up to the expectations of his fans, the Renegades and Amadeus Cho.

It’s a long weekend, and I’m sure while you are waiting for the hot girl next door to layout in her bikini for one last time of the summer, you’ll want something to keep you occupied. It’s going to be another huge week for Marvel, so we’re splitting the sneaks up again. This installment features ANNIHILATION: CONQUEST - WRAITH 3, CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE CHOSEN 1, DAREDEVIL: BATTLIN’ JACK MURDOCK 4, EXILES 98, FANTASTIC FOUR AND POWER PACK 3, INCREDIBLE HULK 110 (WWH), IRON MAN: ENTER THE MANDARIN 1, MARVEL ADVENTURES SPIDER-MAN 31, MARVEL TWO-IN-ONE 3
Or - “Quickly Approaching The Point Of No Return…”
Let’s be honest for a moment: The Incredible Hulk has never been a capital-h Hero in the conventional sense. His actions have always been driven by his flailing emotions, usually the need to be left alone Even during his Defenders days the Hulk was more of a force of nature, a living weapon that Doctor Strange simply pointed in the right direction and let the wackiness ensue. An old chestnut of Marvel said that the green guy had the gentle mind of a five-year-old, but many people forget that while five-year-olds can be joyful, gentle souls, they can also rage out of control when they don’t get what they want or when life is unfair. Ratchet that rage up to eleven, add in gamma-powered muscles as powerful as the heart of hurricane, and we’ve a recipe for disaster. And the Hulk has one more thing in common with a child: he doesn’t think about the consequences of what he’s done until something precious is broken…
We all know Hulk likes to smash, but you may not have caught the little tid-bit in the Marvel second-quarter earnings report that listed Hulk Smash as the next direct-to-DVD animated project from the company.
Doctor Strange is scheduled for an August 14, 2007 release, while Teen Avengers (I’m lost on that one too) is targeted for July 2008. Hulk Smash should arrive in October 2008. This seems a bit odd because one would think Marvel would want to capitalize on the Hulk success as soon as possible following the Incredible Hulk movie.
Yes it’s going to be another huge week for Marvel titles hitting the news stands (something like 22 titles!), so we are once again breaking the weekend sneaks into two parts.
In this installment AMAZING SPIDER-GIRL 11, ANNIHILATION: CONQUEST - WRAITH 2, AVENGERS CLASSIC 3, BLADE 12, CRIMINAL 8, DAREDEVIL 99, EXILES 97, FANTASTIC FIVE 3, GHOST RIDER 14, HEDGE KNIGHT II: SWORN SWORD 3, and the World War Hulk tie-in INCREDIBLE HULK 109.
