Review: STUDIO SPACE – The World’s Greatest Comic Illustrator’s At Work

Monday, June 2nd, 2008--by Stacy Baugher

StudioSpace_picon.jpg

When I was a kid, I remember wanting to be a comic book artist so badly it hurt. Comics had been in my life since before I could remember, and many a day was spent tracing over the art of the greats like Don Heck, John Romita, and Jack Kirby. I shudder to think the number of Bronze Age comics I devalued or destroyed in the name of artistic training. When I got older, I enrolled in every art class I could find and actually became quite good, winning state contests and school shows. The thing that always bugged me though, was how did the people who where published in the comics actually get there, and what was a day in their studio like?

Review: Rapid-Fire Reviews II: Electric Boogaloo!!

Friday, May 30th, 2008--by Matthew Peterson

Or - “Hell, Man… I Only Have So Much Free Time!”

There seems to be a thing out there called “Real Life.”  It’s composed mostly of things to annoy you and drain your wallet of cash, but sometimes it also feeds on your free time.  One of the joys of this gig is getting to share the wondrous things that happen in comics and split the burdens of that which is terrible, which means I usually bite off more than I can chew in terms of comics that I’d like to review.  Since this has happened yet again, it’s time to play catch-up (because mustard stains the carpet.)

The Roberts: Those friendly neighborhood serial killers

Wednesday, May 14th, 2008--by Stephen Schleicher

roberts_01.jpgIf you ever wondered what happened to The Zodiac Killer or The Boston Strangler, Image Comics presents one interpretation of the serial killers in their golden years in Wayne Chinsang and Erik Rose’s The Roberts.

“I admit, I’ve always had a morbid fascination with serial murderers,” said writer Wayne Chinsang, also known to the world by his real name, Justin Shady. “When Denis Rader (BTK) finally got caught in 2005 I remember thinking, ‘What if this guy had never been caught? What would he be like as an eighty-year-old man? Or as a grandfather? How long could someone like him go on living a lie, trying to blend in when he so clearly doesn’t?’ Those thoughts were the start of THE ROBERTS.”

That’s what Chinsang explores in The Roberts featuring the two killers living their golden years out in nursing homes and dreaming of going down in infamy.

The Roberts #1 arrives in August for $5.99.

Astounding Wolf-Man Goes Monthly

Tuesday, May 6th, 2008--by Stephen Schleicher

wolfman08.jpgI guess Robert Kirkman has too many hours in the day, because Image comics has announced the Kirkman, Jason Howard Astounding Wolf-Man will turn into a monthly title this July.

“Frankly, I just couldn’t stay patient,” ASTOUNDING WOLF-MAN co-creator and writer Robert Kirkman said. “Over the past year THE ASTOUNDING WOLF-MAN has become one of my favorite books to write and, even more so, seeing the pages pour in from Jason has made me crave MORE! With the impending shocker we’ve got coming in issue 7, we decided to switch the book from once every sixty days to every thirty! I certainly think folks will be happy with the results.”

The 32-page Astounding Wolf-Man #8 will arrive July 30, 2008.

Aletheia Premieres on MySpace

Thursday, May 1st, 2008--by Stephen Schleicher

alethia_01.jpgImage Comics Shadowline has announced it will debut the entire issue of Aletheia on MySpace Comic Books weeks before the issue arrives in stores.

“With the ever increasing amount of new titles on the stands, we really wanted to do something new and different to help ALETHEIA stand out,” said Shadowline President Jim Valentino. “Teaming up with MySpace in this manner gave the series a spotlight it may not have had otherwise had and we don’t doubt it will result in many more readers heading into stores for the book.”

This is not a new movie, Boom! Studios did something similar not too long ago, and the issue ended up selling out at the distributor level. Having these preview issues available online to give readers a taste of the real deal is a great gateway to purchasing the title and quite possibly others when the reader ventures into their LCS.
