Thursday, March 20th, 2008--by Stephen Schleicher

amorywars_vol1picon.jpg

I only became aware of Amory Wars when one of my students came to class with an issue and forced it upon me to read. I only got through the first issue before the semester ended, but always wondered what happened to the series. Image Comics has announced it will bundle The Armory Wars mini-series into a trade collection that will make its debut at the New York Comic Con.

Thursday, March 13th, 2008--by Matthew Peterson

Or - “Menaces Gathering In The Shadows…”

D52.jpg

Dynamo 5 has not had it easy in their first months as a super-team, being repeatedly forced to face down the various enemies of their late father, Captain Dynamo, dealing with the tensions of a new family, and trying to balance homelives with crime-fighting careers.  Now, for one of the team, family is about to intrude upon her costumed life (or perhaps that’s the other way around) in the most horrifying way possible…

Monster Zoo Nabbed by Paramount

Tuesday, March 11th, 2008--by Stephen Schleicher

monsterzoo_cov.jpgImage Comics Monster Zoo graphic novel has been snagged by Paramount Pictures to be turned into a live action feature film.

The action-adventure story is set in motion when an ancient idol is unearthed and transported to a zoo in the U.S. There, the idol’s spirit awakens and starts to mutate the caged animals. A group of teenagers must band together to try to stop the idol and the evil from destroying the world. The graphic novel will be published in May from Image Comics.

The move will be produced by Sam Raimi and Josh Donen.

What really amazes me is the huge amount of money being exchanged for a single comic property these days. Sources claim this deal is in the seven figure range. Seven figures - that’s at least a million dollars right there for a comic that won’t hit stands until May. To put things into more perspective, creator Doug TenNapel did score $1,000,000 for Tommysaurus Rex a few years ago.

wildguardpicon.jpg

Creator/Artist Todd Nauck tells Major Spoilers his indie title Wildguard is returning in May with a new three issue mini-series.

“As much fun as playing in Marvel and DC’s sandboxes can be, I’ve been very eager to get back to my own toys,” said Nauck. “While I’ve had a great time with the website strips, this is a return to WILDGUARD at their absolute best - down on the printed page. It’s really fun to be back at it.”

Pretty Baby Machine Sneak

Monday, March 3rd, 2008--by Stephen Schleicher

picon.jpg

Image Comics has slipped us a few pages of art from Kody Chamberlain that can be found in Pretty, Baby, Machine due in stores in May. The three issue mini-series is written by Clark Westerman

“PRETTY, BABY, MACHINE came out of a love for the classic noir films of the 1950s and the startlingly true history of America’s mobsters,” said Westerman. “However, it wasn’t until I saw Kody’s art that the idea really gelled. Seeing the range of his styles blew me away and soon after, we got to work on PRETTY, BABY, MACHINE.”

Read Pax Romana #1 for Free

Monday, March 3rd, 2008--by Stephen Schleicher

paxromana01.jpgImage Comics has announced Jonathan Hickman will release the first issue of his new mini-series Pax Romana for free on the Internets  that will coincide with the release of issue #2 in the stores.

“I’m extremely proud of PAX ROMANA,” said creator Jonathan Hickman. “It’s enough of a departure from my first project, The NIGHTLY NEWS, that I had concerns about how it would be initially received. The fact that we printed more copies – the fact that we sold out of those copies – has been wonderful.”

Pax Romana #2 arrives in stores this week for $3.50.  You can read the first issue here.

Proof Trade on the Way

Friday, February 15th, 2008--by Stephen Schleicher

proof_vol1_tp.jpgImage Comics has announce it has collected the arc of Proof into a trade paperback that should be on the shelves soon.  I read the first issue some time ago, and thought the concept of a walking talking big foot as part of a cryptozoology team to be a fairly good idea.  For some reason, I never saw the other issues in the series, so the trade might be a good idea.

“Being new creators with an odd concept is a frightening thing, which may have fueled the horrific things happening in the book,” Grecian said. “However, the reception has been fantastic, from both fan and critics alike. We already have five years of the series plotted out, so we’re very happy to tell that tale and everything that follows.”

Proof: Volume 1 will be in stores May 7, 2008 for $9.99.

Mice Templar Goes Daily

Wednesday, February 13th, 2008--by Stephen Schleicher

micetemplar_04.jpgIf you missed the first series of the Mice Templar by Michael Avon Oeming, you’ll be happy to know you can read one page a day over at hiddenrobot.com beginning March 3.

THE MICE TEMPLAR is a tale of tragedy and restoration centering on Karic, a young mouse who finds himself thrust headlong into the very real world surrounding the legends of his youth. In addition to the unfolding saga in the Daily format, the universe of MICE TEMPLAR can be explored deeper via the Website materials compiled by writer Bryan Glass and Webmaster Tim Daniel, featuring original unpublished art, early stories, and an exhaustive glossary of all terms, titles and characters: a veritable MUST for all fans of the fantasy epic.

The one page a day thing is a an idea a lot of publishers are trying to implement across websites, in what I believe, to be an attempt to hop on the webcomic bandwagon. While some may not like the slow pace in reading this causes, it actually does work in the long term - just look at The Dreamland Chronicles as an example of a comic book story that works.  And certainly this is a big thing for hiddenrobot (aka Newsarama) as it is a great way to boost page hits.  I’m sure if a publisher approached Major Spoilers, I would certainly consider it, but I think it would serve Image better if the content appeared on its own site.

But that’s just my opinion.
