Image At Heroescon!

Thursday, June 19th, 2008--by Image Comics

17 June 2008 (Berkeley, CA) - This upcoming weekend, Charlotte, NC’s HeroesCon once again plays host to Image Comics, with guests and panels galore!

“HeroesCon is a darned fine funnybook show,” Image Comics Publisher Erik Larsen said. “In an age when outside media like movies and video games have taken over most conventions, Shelton Drumm and his dedicated team consistently keep Heroes focused on what matters most to those of us in the world of contemporary pictorial literature - a bona-fide COMIC BOOK convention that’s fun for the whole family!”

In addition to the overwhelming number of Image creators attending, Image will be spotlighted on a total of three panels including the State of the Industry Discussion, Friday at 1:30, featuring Image Comics Publisher Erik Larsen in room 207. Saturday brings Tori Amos’ COMIC BOOK TATTOO panel at 12:00PM and The Image Comics Show at 4:00 PM, both in room 217BCD. This Image Comics Show’s HeroesCon debut  features Erik Larsen, THE WALKING DEAD’s Robert Kirkman, THE NIGHTLY NEWS’ Jonathan Hickman, PERHAPANAUTS’ creators Todd Dezago & Craig Rosseau and a number of announcements, including the first word on Whilce Portacio’s other big project.

HeroesCon will take place June 20-22 at the Charlotte Convention Center. Image Comics can be found at booth 320.

Review: Invincible #50

Sunday, June 15th, 2008--by Matthew Peterson

Or - “These Days, The Government Agencies Always Go Bad…”

Back in the day, the government agent was someone you could trust…  Dick Tracy.  Nick Fury.  King Faraday.  James Bond.  The spies were always honest, and they stopped those with ignoble or antisocial points of view, for the good of America and/or Mother Britain.  In this, the age of irony, we have seen a paradigm shift, where even Nick Fury has admitted that he’s engaged in monstrous behaviors, engaging wars, setting up innocents to be killed, and generally being a jerk.  For a couple of years now, Invincible has been working for Cecil Steadman, a government spook who literally has the influence to do whatever is necessary in the name of truth, justice, and the American way.  There’s no way that *HE*, too is an amoral buttmonkey, right?

Right?

Todd McFarlane and Whilce Portacio Return to Spawn

Monday, June 9th, 2008--by Stephen Schleicher

WhilceSpawn.jpg

Image has announced two of its founds, Todd McFarlane and Whilce Portacio, will return to Spawn this October. Beginning with issue #185 the title character will return to its roots.

“While I’m very happy with where Spawn has gone, it’s long past time to inject some new blood into the series while also returning to its roots,” said McFarlane. “I feel what Whilce and I are doing with our co-writer, Brian Holguin, combines the old and the new in a way no one would have expected. That’s a claim which gets tossed around quite a bit in the industry, but this one really changes everything.”

More details of the changes will be announced by Image over the next couple of weeks.

Review: STUDIO SPACE – The World’s Greatest Comic Illustrator’s At Work

Monday, June 2nd, 2008--by Stacy Baugher

StudioSpace_picon.jpg

When I was a kid, I remember wanting to be a comic book artist so badly it hurt. Comics had been in my life since before I could remember, and many a day was spent tracing over the art of the greats like Don Heck, John Romita, and Jack Kirby. I shudder to think the number of Bronze Age comics I devalued or destroyed in the name of artistic training. When I got older, I enrolled in every art class I could find and actually became quite good, winning state contests and school shows. The thing that always bugged me though, was how did the people who where published in the comics actually get there, and what was a day in their studio like?

Review: Rapid-Fire Reviews II: Electric Boogaloo!!

Friday, May 30th, 2008--by Matthew Peterson

Or - “Hell, Man… I Only Have So Much Free Time!”

There seems to be a thing out there called “Real Life.”  It’s composed mostly of things to annoy you and drain your wallet of cash, but sometimes it also feeds on your free time.  One of the joys of this gig is getting to share the wondrous things that happen in comics and split the burdens of that which is terrible, which means I usually bite off more than I can chew in terms of comics that I’d like to review.  Since this has happened yet again, it’s time to play catch-up (because mustard stains the carpet.)
