IDW Publishing ha announced a new series called Pantheon created by Michael Chiklis, Anny Simon Beck, and written by Marc Andreyko. The series tells a the story of the Greek gods returning to Earth to battle for the fate of mankind.
The five-issue series pits Zeus’s fellow gods against the Titans in an epic battle of good versus evil, and father versus son. Breaking the golden rule of Greek mythology – to never reveal themselves – the gods Zeus, Aphrodite, Pandora, Cronus, Prometheus and Jason return to their timeless battles, as Armageddon nears.
“As a kid, Greek Gods were very real to me, so the chance to bring my childhood heroes and villains to life in the modern world is irresistible,” said Chiklis, a third generation Greek-American, in a prepared statement. “Besides, I couldn’t say no to Zeus. . . no one in the family would ever talk to me again.”
Providing the art for the series will be Stephen Molnar, with the Sharp Brothers providing the covers for the series. Pantheon will launch during WonderCon, April 2 – 4, 2010 at the Moscone Center in San Francisco, CA.

According to Latino Review, the creative team of Kurtzman and Orci have picked up the rights to produce the movie adaptation of Joe Hill’s Locke and Key series. If you haven’t been reading the series since the beginning, you are missing out on one of the best comic books out there, and you’ll want to read this before going to see any movie based on the property. In regards to Kurtzman and Orci producing the movie? As long as they stay on the producing side of the fence and don’t try to write this themselves, it should be okay. The duo run hot and cold with me and with many audiences, who fell in love with Star Trek, but loathed Transformers II (among others). Let’s hope the producers play it wirte and actually high Joe to write the screenplay instead of someone else.

The wildly successful return of Opus, Binkley, Bill the Cat and the entire cast of Bloom County continues in April with Bloom County: The Complete Library, Volume Two. Creator Berkeley Breathed offers even more funny and insightful commentary than in the first volume, while context pages help fans recapture the glory of the 1980’s. IDW is also expanding the series to include a limited edition of the first volume, featuring a tipped-in bookplate signed by Breathed himself.
“In the spirit of humiliating self-disclosure that has become so trendy of late, I stuffed this volume with more embarrassing background stories behind the cartoons. Drugs, sex and gunplay, it’s all there,” added Breathed.

The excitement keeps growing for IDW Publishing’s TRANSFORMERS and G.I. JOE comics, with two new sold-out series last week. On Wednesday, January 27th, IDW released G.I. JOE: COBRA II #1, a continuation of the acclaimed COBRA series, and TRANSFORMERS: Last Stand of the WRECKERS #1, a new miniseries spinning out of IDW’s ongoing story. Both comics flew off the shelves and are already sold-out though Diamond. Under license from Hasbro, IDW is rushing to a second printing for each, and fans can expect them in stores on February 10th.
“This is a really exciting time for fans of both TRANSFORMERS and G.I. JOE,” said Andy Schmidt, editor of both lines of comics for IDW. “We’ve tried a lot of new things and had a lot of success due to the support of not only the existing fan base but also many newer fans who are discovering these comics for the first time.”

Robot Overlord: I’m more of a Cobra Commander fan, than that of the Joes, but Stephen and Matthew are always going on about the “good guys”. I’m giving them a chance to express themselves this week as they dive into G.I. Joe Cobra II.
Or – “There Are Old Pilots And Bold Pilots, But Few Old, Bold Pilots…”

I saw recently that a clinical study proved that January 25th is the most depressing day of the entire year, scientifically and unequivocally. While I don’t disagree with that sentiment (especially as it regards the attendance of employees in Midwestern United States call centers) I find it fascinating that somebody actually got paid to try and figure out something that silly and (let’s be honest, here) banal. Still and all, it’s the kind of story that you read and go, “Yeah, I can see that.” Thus, to ease your slowly-receding ennui (and Stephen’s not-so-slowly receding hairline) I give you another batch of coverage of comics you might have read, but forgot to laugh at the first time… Rapid-Fire Style!

Josh Howard announced he will be the artist on an upcoming IDW Ghostbusters one-shot called “CON-volution”. The issue will be written by Jim Beard and Kieth Dallas. Since the title features CON so prominently, it comes as no surprise then that the issue arrives this summer.

I am really excited about this announcement from IDW Publishing that the company is collecting the L’il Abner series into a hardbound volume. Growing up, I had small trades from the late 60s to read, and enjoyed the introduction of the Shmoo, Sadie Hawkins Day, and of course the gorgeous Daisy Mae (not to be confused with Daisy Marie). The first volume of the Al Capp series arrives in April.

One of the things that never ceases to amaze your Robot Overlord, is how often people fall into the trap of the tabloid magazines. The Weekly World News has been around since before I got my first transistor, and has been outlet for entertainment for both of my favorite meat bags. IDW Publishing released Weekly World News – the comic book this week, and in my infinite wisdom, the Robot Overlord tagged it as the first dueling review of 2010. Matthew, Stephen, your Robot Overlord commands you to commence with the dueling review!
I mentioned on this week’s Major Spoilers Podcast, that this week would be a perfect week to go to your local comic book store, pick up one addition comic, and thank the store owner for being in business. Going to the store, and being polite to the person behind the counter is for you to figure out, but if you are looking for a new comic, you might take a gander at IDW’s Weekly World News.
The ongoing comic book series written by IDW’s Editor-in-Chief Chris Ryall is not what you might expect. I had a chance to get look at the title before it hit stands, and it is an enjoyable read if you are into the paranormal and the weird. Matthew and I will be giving the book our Dueling Review treatment this weekend, so if you want to follow along and weigh in, pick up a copy today when you get your weekly stash.
