It’s been some time since the first information circulated that NECA (The National Entertainment Collectibles Association, Inc.) was sniffing around to pick up the assets from WizKids.  The speculation became fact as the company announced it as purchased the majority of WizKids’ assets, including the Clix line, which includes HeroClix, ActionClix, HorrorClix, and SportsClix.

“WizKids has created the best games within the collectible miniature and constructible genres and NECA is proud to help continue this great legacy,” said Joel Weinshanker, President and CEO of NECA. “The HeroClix engine is the envy of the industry and many companies have attempted to emulate it without success. We’re thrilled to deliver HeroClix to the gamers.”

To help the Clix line move forward, NECA has also hired Lax Chandra, who ran WizKids for Topps, to serve as the President of NECA’s WizKids subsidiary.

Man, now I wish I hadn’t given away all those HeroClix.  Suddenly I think they’ll be that much more valuable, especially if Topps decides HeroClix aren’t viable in the long run.

Press Release

The Topps Company announced today that WizKids will immediately cease operations and discontinue its product lines.

Scott Silverstein, CEO of Topps, said “This was an extremely difficult decision. While the company will still actively pursue gaming initiatives, we feel it is necessary to align our efforts more closely with Topps current sports and entertainment offerings which are being developed within our New York office.”

Upon notifying our partners, Topps will immediately pursue strategic alternatives so that viable brands and properties, including HeroClix, can continue without noticeable disruption. To that end, WizKids will continue supporting Buy it By the Brick redemptions for Arkham Asylum, and the December Organized Play events for HeroClix.

It’s a shame the company shut down, but from what I’ve seen at a few local conventions, HeroClix gaming, as well as MechWarrior table top games were not as popular as they once were.

Good news for gamers, and the HeroClix line – the new Arkham Asylum line has sold out at the distributor level in North America a week before they are sold in stores.

DC HeroClix: Arkham Asylum brings BATMAN’s most dangerous villains to players’ tabletops to re-wage the wars of their favorite comic, film, and television storylines.

I’ve stopped buying HeroClix, simply because I don’t have time to play the game, nor the time to chase down the exclusives that sell for the big bucks, but every time I see a new DC line announced, I’m so, so, tempted to get back in.

While we receive tons of sold out and back to print announcements from publishers, it was a surprise to see a similar announcement from WizKids, makers of the HeroClix line.  Seems the Super Skrull: Illuminati figures have completely sold out, prompting the company to a first-ever brick figure reprint.

“After the Crisis ‘Buy it by the Brick’ program, we did some serious evaluation of it in anticipation for Secret Invasion and built in the possibility of a reprint”, said Justin Ziran, Managing Director of WizKids. “With this second sell out, we’re glad to see that we succeeded in continuing to deliver a premium program benefiting brick and mortar retailers and pleasing HeroClix consumers alike.”

WizKids currently needs 300 more unfulfilled brick figure orders before October 24th to issue an unumbered version of the Super Skrull: Illuminati figure.

HDCR_060.jpgWizKids has announced it has sold out its entire Crisis inventory in the U.S. and Canada. Because of the scarcity, WizKids will be importing a limited number of booster packs from Europe, but after those are gone, the worldwide supply of the game figures will be gone.

“We are pleased and surprised with the outstanding results of the sale of Crisis,” said Joe Hauck, WizKids® executive vice president. “Diamond and Alliance sold in two weeks what historically would have sold over the course of four months. The tie-ins between this HeroClix set and the rich DC Comics storylines created a product that really resonates with our total customer base.”

The company claims the success of the sell out is due in part to its “Buy by the Brick” campaign.

The first ever HeroClix World Championship was crowned at Gen Con Indianapolis 2007 as part of the fifth anniversary of HeroClix. There were 32 players that included five international champions at the event.

Sadly, US champ Scott Crampton didn’t win, instead Italian Antonio Santangelo took home the trophy – a replica of Thor’s Hammer from Diamond Select Toys and Collectibles.

WizKids announced the conclusion of its Coming of Galactus HeroClix event that celebrated the fifth anniversary of HeroClix. The winner of the event received the 2007 Galactus colossal figure.

900 retailers participated in the world wide event, and from the information WizKids provided it seems it was a good money making event for the stores involved.

The next big event from WizKids is Starro Attacks!

I’ve got my fare share of DC and Marvel Heroclix figures cozied away in a secret room I have yet to reveal to the Major Spoiler masses. I haven’t picked up any in quite a while, mainly because the local store has stopped carrying the line, and I really don’t have anyone to play against.

But I am super excited about the Starro Attacks Heroclix event featuring the new Justice League booster packs with several exclusive Starro related figures.

Wizkids Games has sent us some high-res images of the figures including a huge Starro that should put that Sinestro figure to shame.
