I was in the checkout line the other day, when the cashier mentioned how much she liked my Batman t-shirt. The more I wander the streets and the malls, the more people I see wearing comic book and television properties on their chests. Hasbro wants to make sure everyone can get their hands on its property by announcing it is rolling out its properties to adorn apparel.
“We’re working with highly creative apparel companies that have designed some amazing Hasbro-branded graphic and vintage tees that will appeal to both fashion- and value-conscious consumers,” said Mary Lasell, Director of Soft Goods Licensing at Hasbro. “We express ourselves through what we wear, so whether you’re looking to make a fashion-forward statement, seeking an easygoing casual look or outfitting your kids for back-to-school, there will be an array of Hasbro-infused apparel items at retail stores worldwide that will immediately resonate with men, women and children.”
The obvious properties to hit store shelves first will be Transformers and G.I. Joe, but look for Tonka, Monopoly, and the Littlest Pet Shop to join the lineup. The clothing line is just the first step, as Hasbro plans to unveil more licensing deals soon.
We reported on this story back in February, when the initial announcement was made, but at that time, no release date had been announced. Today, Universal Pictures and Hasbro have announced the Stretch Armstrong movie will hit theaters on April 15, 2011.
“Stretch Armstrong is a character I have wanted to see on screen for a long time,” said Imagine Entertainment’s Brian Grazer. “He’s an unconventional kind of super hero with a power that no one would want. It’s a story about a guy stretching – if you will – the limits of what is possible to become all that he can be.”
Amstrong flick is being written by Steve Oedekerk, and is being produced by Grazer. There are still no stars attached, and no word if this is going to be a live action film or animated. While Oedekerk is known for his Bruce and Evan Almighty picks, he’s also written a fair number of animated features (Barnyard comes to mind first), so I wouldn’t be surprised if Stretch were a 3D feature.
Stretch is the first in a four picture deal between Universal and Hasbro.
Universal Pictures and Hasbro, Inc. formed the partnership in 2008 to produce at least four motion pictures based on some of the world’s best-known and beloved brands. Currently in development are Monopoly, with Ridley Scott set to produce and direct and Pamela Pettler writing the screenplay; Candyland, with Kevin Lima to direct based on a script from Etan Cohen; Clue, with Gore Verbinski to produce and direct; Ouija, with Michal Bay to produce; and Battleship, with Peter Berg to direct from a screenplay by Jon and Erich Hoeber.

I grew up during the 70’s and 80’s during the whole controversy surrounding children’s programing geared toward selling toys to the viewer. So imagine my surprise when I woke up this morning to discover Hasbro is teaming with Discovery Communications to form a new television network.
Both the network and the venture’s online component will feature content from Hasbro’s rich portfolio of entertainment and educational properties built over the past 90 years, including original programming for animation, game shows, and live-action series and specials. New programming will be based on brands such as ROMPER ROOM, TRIVIAL PURSUIT, SCRABBLE, CRANIUM, MY LITTLE PONY, G.I. JOE, GAME OF LIFE, TONKA and TRANSFORMERS, among many others. The TV network and online presence also will include content from Discovery’s extensive library of award-winning children’s educational programming, such as BINDI THE JUNGLE GIRL, ENDURANCE, TUTENSTEIN, HI-5, FLIGHT 29 DOWN and PEEP AND THE BIG WIDE WORLD, as well as programming from third-party producers.
It sounds like a cool deal, but I bet it takes five years before my local cable provider puts it in the lineup. Also, fans of Discovery Kids can start counting down the days, as that channel will go silent when the network is launched.

If you thought the G.I. Joe movie looked ridiculous, just wait until you see the first trailer for the Steve Oedekerk Stretch Armstrong movie. Stretch Armstrong? I remember that guy!
“This is a new well from which to draw intellectual properties that bring a pre-awareness and nostalgia,” Schneir said. “They are drawing filmmakers who find a real emotional connection and resonance, and this is proving to be a compelling driver for motion pictures.”
The toy from the 70’s also featured a monster, a dog, and an evil twin brother. The last time a Stretch Armstrong movie tried to get made, it was with Danny DeVito and Jackie Chan. No release date or stars have been attached.

Hasbro has announced the 3.75-inch Wolverine Animated figures to go along with the current cartoon series.
If you purchase an entire case, here’s what you get:
- 2x Cyclops
- 3x TBD
- 1x Iceman
- 1x TBD
- 1x Avalanche
- 1x Beast
- 2x TBD
- 1x TBD
(subject to change)
The figures are expected to release in March 2009, although I’ve seen reports that the articulation on the figures is not that good.

My guess is probably not, but check out Hasbro’s new Thor/Transformer action figure. It may look like the Norse god of Thunder, but throw in those special sound effects that only you know how to make, and guess what it turns into?
Somehow, I’m just not as nervous about our impending doom after seeing cute wuvable Mighty Muggs Galactus.

“Who’s a cutie?”
Stop it.
“Somebody’s gwumpie…”
Stop it!
“Did ums not get enough to eat this morning?”
I am the devourer of worlds!
“I think you need a nap.”
sigh…

I’m sure it isn’t a literal ton of toys – well, maybe it is, I haven’t weighed the average action figure lately – in any case, Hasbro as announced several new toy lines at the San Diego Comic-Con.
I don’t have any awesome cool pictures, but if you are at the show and stop by the Hasbro booth, take a few snaps for us, won’t you?

It’s the thing I hate hearing most when I’m hanging with my peeps in Vegas, but for G.I. Joe fans, the name might send shivers down your spine. Two photos of the character have been released on-line. We have one after the jump.

Yes, that Taters of the Lost Ark thing had me pretty down on what Hasbro had planned for the Indiana Jones line, but now that I’ve seen the other pictures – oh doggy!
You really don’t want to know.

Okay, if you must, it’s another toy from Hasbro based on Raiders of the Lost Ark, called Taters of the Lost Ark. I think I’m gonna pass on this one.
It’ll sell for $15, when it is released May 1, 2008.

Hasbro has announced toy tie-ins for the Marvel Iron Man movie and comic franchise. The Iron Man mask actually looks pretty cool, it’s just too bad it doesn’t come in 30-year-old-comic-nerd sizes.

Hasbro has announced its Hulk toys and products for the Spring 2008 that tie in to the upcoming movie and comic book from Marvel.

Hasbro has unveiled the toys inspired by the Spectacular Spider-Man television series, movies, and comic book. It looks like there will be around 50 figures (including villains) released throughout the year. The one I think will be cool is the Remote Control Wallcrawler Spider-Man that uses vacuum-pump technology to let the wall crawler climb the walls.

Hasbro has unveiled the first toy from the Cloverfield movie – the Cloverfield monster. If you didn’t get a good look at the creature in the film, you can now proudly display this creepy creature from the deep in your home for an estimated price of $99.00.
