In Grimm Fairy Tales #29 (King Midas) we were introduced to Mercy Dante, a character who became quite controversial among fans of the series.  In the issue Mercy fulfilled her plans for revenge against David Frank, a retired hit man who murdered her parents (who were weapon dealers) when she was a child.  A grownup Mercy kidnaps David’s daughter, Trisha, from school one day, and takes her to a warehouse where her father is bound to a chair. Mercy proceeds to shoot Trisha to death in front of her father.

You can easily see where the controversy comes in.

The keeper of the tales has been trapped for a while by her nemesis, and now she’s back to make people’s lives turn around for the better.  But what if the person who needs to change, would really rather return to what they know best?

Let’s see that again from the other angle

If you haven’t figured it out by now, I’m a sucker for good girl art, and Zenescope has got to be the company with the most curvaceous lovelies in its titles. Grimm Fairy Tales features those ladies, but for some reason, by the end of the most current issue, those girls who think they are better than us normal people always meet their grizzled end.  In the case of issue #36, the pretty girl gets killed… again.

The Picture of Dorian Gray

grimmfairytales35picon.jpg

Zenescope Entertainment’s Grimm Fairy Tales has undergone quite a change since the Belinda came on the scene.  Instead of telling morality plays like Sela, the tales spun in these tales are quite dark – instead of helping people, the tales are being used to make people’s lives even worse.  Issue #35 is not exception as readers get a modern take on the Picture of Dorian Gray.

Zenescope has a whole lotta things going on at Wizard World Philadelphia taking place May 30 – June 1, 2008. Not only will the company have several convention exclusives, but the company is also hosting a Wizard School panel, creator signings, and an after party bash.

“Philly Wizard World is in our backyard and we’re extremely excited about this one.” said Zenescope President Joe Brusha. “We debuted our very first issue at the Philly con back in ’05 and the fans who showed up supported us right out of the gate and we’re so appreciative of that. We’re looking forward to another great show this year.”

This October Zenescope Entertainment will be reprinting the first three issues of the popular Grimm Fairy Tales series. I think I’ve described the series as a cross between the real gory Grimm tales, and The Twilight Zone. Although things have taken an interesting turn in the most recent issue, the first three issues are really stellar.

To make these reprints stand out, Zenescope will pack the issues with Editor’s Extras, which feature extra artwork, sketches, character designs and new covers.

Take the jump for a preview of the Al Rio cover for issue #1.

Return to wonderland #1 hits stores today. If you haven’t read the preview issue released a couple of months ago, then you might want to flip through the issue in the stores, or read this sneak peek of issue #2.

Personally, I like the Grimm Fairy Tales stories as they are retellings of the classic tales with a Twilight Zone twist to them. With the exception of one or two of the stories, I think the series is a good one. Return to Wonderland looks to be a really twisted visit to the land of yesteryear – I like it.

Zenescope Entertainment sent me one of the collected trades of Grimm Fairy Tales, and I have to say I really like it. From the fantastic covers by Al Rio to the Twilight Zone-ish stories, Zenescope has a hidden gem you really should check out.

Last weekend, the company released Return to Wonderland #0 for a mere 99 cents and it completely sold out at Diamond, prompting Zenescope to order a 2nd printing of the issue.

Everytime I have posted the cover image to the first printing, there are a ton of hits and downloads from those digging on the Al Rio artwork. There is a new cover to the 2nd printing that features a wrap around cover, and it looks awesome. Our servers are prepared for the fan onslaught.

Return to Wonderland follows the story of Calie Liddle, daughter of the now adult and mentally ill Alice, as she journeys to the twisted realm of Wonderland to uncover the mystery behind Wonderland’s origins and her mother’s sickness.

The monthly kicks off June 13th.
