Review: Green Lantern #32

Saturday, June 28th, 2008--by Joshua Hill

greenlantern32picon.jpg

The Secret Origin storyline being run within the Green Lantern issues reached its fourth part this month. Being written by Geoff Johns, you can pretty much expect a good story, and so far, he’s been really hitting the mark. It was interesting to see, what essentially is a “Year One” storyline done within the pages of Green Lantern. Add on to that the total ret-conning that he is doing for the upcoming Blackest Night storyline in GL, and you have a gem of a series.

Or so you would think.

Review: Green Lantern #30

Tuesday, May 6th, 2008--by Joshua Hill

or, Geoff Johns, the Master of the RetCon

greenlantern30picon.jpg

Green Lantern #30 was highly anticipated in the Hill household, as I would get to see part 2 of what I believe to be a 3 part origin story, and it didn’t disappoint. Beautiful artwork, beautiful storytelling, and just the right amount of twist to give the story a new breath of fresh air.

Now don’t get me wrong, the Green Lantern origin story is one of the greatest there is. It is simple, uncomplicated; Abin Sur crashes, Hal Jordan is brave. What more do you want?

But the GL origin story was, more often than not, part of a greater story. This time, it is the story!

Green Lantern #29

Tuesday, April 1st, 2008--by Joshua Hill

The story behind the story

It has been the underground success of the DC Universe over the past year and a bit, and there’s no need to guess why: it’s Green Lantern, and Hal Jordan is simply one of the greatest characters ever to be written. So to disclaimer this review let me say two things; I love Hal Jordan, and I love origin stories.

I disclaimer it for a reason; many of you may have already seen the amount of trash talk that has gone around about this issue of Green Lantern. But as much trash talk is, it is narrow minded and naive.

Green Lantern #28

Or - “Roy G. Biv!  Easy as 1-2-Thriv!  Roy G. Biv, 1-2-Thriv, Baby You & Miv!”

GL2.jpg

The irony of the current run on Green Lantern?  When Hal was removed from office in 1994, part of the reasoning was that having the entire Corps made Green Lantern less unique…  Now, with thousands of Lanterns running about, as well as the Sinestro Corps, the Zamaron’s potential Corps, Ganthet and Sayd’s Blue Lantern Corps of Hope, The Black Lanterns, as well as the Plaid Lanterns of Bismoll (I may have possibly made one of them up) somebody at DC has finally realized what we knew all along: The Corps makes GL MORE unique, rather than less…

Green Lantern Gets Director

Monday, October 29th, 2007--by Stephen Schleicher

Greenlanternrebirth6.jpgVariety is reporting that Greg Berlanti has been hired by Warner Bros. to write and direct the Green Lantern movie. Berlanti will share writing duties with Marc Guggenheim and Michael Green.

Guggenheim, who works with Berlanti as a writer-producer on “Brothers & Sisters,” wrote the Marvel comicbooks “Amazing Spider-Man,” “Wolverine” and “Blade.” Green, the “Heroes” co-exec producer who worked with Berlanti on “Everwood” and “Jack & Bobby,” wrote the Marvel Comics title “Superman/Batman” and was a writer-producer on “Smallville.”

It’s good to see that even a big name mag like Variety has a problem remembering Superman/Batman is a DC title and not Marvel Comics.

No word on a shoot date or who may or may not be cast in the role as Hal Jordan. With the news of the Flash, Warner Bros. may be changing its mind about waiting until the JLA movie is finished before doing the spin-off flicks. It would be great to have a flood of stand alone and team movies hitting theaters around the same time frame.

Green Lantern #24

Or - “Totally Missed This One Last Week.”

GLC10.jpg

Okay, now it’s just getting troublesome… I don’t have the slightest idea how I didn’t catch this one when I did my “purchase for review” pile last Wednesday, but somehow I did. Mea culpa. Anyway, we’re knee-deep in the Sinestro Corps War, and Earth’s various Lanterns are all feeling the pain, while their green brothers are getting killed in space. The Guardians are likewise in disarray, and it’s liable to get worse afore it gets better. Remember Cyborg Superman? Tom Welling Prime? How ’bout the evil tupperware masked Parallax? They’re all ready to throw down, and all that stands in their way is a rapidly dwindling Thin Green Line…

Green Lantern Corps #16

Or - “Lethal Force From A Green Lantern Seems Like A Contradiction…”

GLC10.jpg

I’ve mentioned in previous coverage of the Sinestro Corp War that I think the Guardians of the Universe may be making a mistake in releasing the ‘No Lethal Force’ directive on the GLC’s power rings. Yes, it’s a hoary old cliche, and yes, the Corps is facing the most deadly threat of their history, but I’m honestly troubled by Green Lanterns becoming killers. Of course, the Sinestro Corps is bringing the pain on a global scale, and they’re shooting to kill, but isn’t giving GLC members additional power what put Sinestro on this path in the first place?

Second Printings for Everyone!

Wednesday, October 3rd, 2007--by Stephen Schleicher

sinestro.jpg

In its latest press release, DC Comics has announced a whole lotta comics going back to press. Among them are Green Lantern 323, Tales of the Sinestro Corps: Parallax #1, Birds of Prey: Between Dark and Dawn TP, Planetary: Crossing Worlds TP, and Supergirl: Power TP.

Its really gratifying to have readers respond to the PARALLAX Special this way, because we set out to do something different with it, says writer Ron Marz. The Sinestro Corps War storyline has been full of slam-bang, widescreen action, so we wanted the Parallax chapter to be a change of pace more of a psychological story that gives the audience a look inside Kyles mind. Its great to be part of an epic thats worthy of the term.

Unfortunately, the Trick ‘R Treat miniseries is being postponed and will be resolicited at a later date. My guess this is a Halloween themed series that was originally scheduled for October. Doesn’t make sense to offer it in November or December, so I expect we will see this next year.

The company also sent along th latest Sinestro Corps War schedule and a clarification to one of the titles in the series. You can see all that after the jump.

Booster Gold #2: Leggo My Ego

Saturday, September 29th, 2007--by Stephen Schleicher

Booster v. Sinestro

boostergold_picon.jpg

Time travel adventures are going to be a pretty hot item over the next couple of years. Legion of Super-heroes are bouncing all around time, Journeyman is scoring high on NBC, and Booster Gold and Rip Hunter are tripping through the time stream. The debut issue was an awesome smack in the face that made me want to follow the adventures of Rip, Booster, and Skeets. As I swim through my growing pile of issues not yet read, issue #2 floated to the surface. Did Geoff Johns and Jeff Katz hit another ball out of the ballpark? Will Blue Beetle be resurrected? And what is up with Supernova?

Or - “That Cover Looks Really Familiar…”

GLC10.jpg

That right there is an “Oh, $#!+” moment… If you were around in 1985-1986, you may remember the sheer scope and breathtaking change that the original Crisis On Infinite Earths heralded. This was staid and steady DC here, the company known for the status quo, and infinite variations on a theme (Kryptonian renegades from the Phantom Zone! The Joker has committed crimes that start with J, then O, then K, but where will he strike next?) and even the shock value of Supergirl’s death could be one-upped by the sacrifice of a FOUNDING MEMBER OF THE JLA! The sight of the Anti-Monitor at the end of the Sinestro Corps Special literally gave me goosebumps, and I get the feeling that it’s only going to get worse…

Sinestro Corps War Checklist

Thursday, August 23rd, 2007--by Stephen Schleicher

GL1picon.jpg

DC Comics sent us a run down of all the Sinestro Corps War tie-in issues coming out in the next couple of months. If you missed out on the Green Lantern: Sinestro Corps Special #1, then you missed one hell of an issue. You also might have a hard time finding it in stores, as it has sold out three different times. DC announced it will be going back to press for a fourth printing, so it should be in your hands soon.

DC hasn’t announced what it will do with the other sold out issues.

Or - “Two Crossover Issues Involving The Color Green In A Row…”

GLC10.jpg

It’s a Verdant Monday at Major Spoilers! When last we saw the Green Lantern Corps, Sinestro’s evil plan is proceeding as written, with the Guardians in disarray, Mogo under assault, John Stewart and Guy Gardner MIA, Kyle Rayner possessed by Parallax, and Ion under lock and key. The myriad Sinestro Corps members have been killing Lanterns left, right, and center leaving the Corps more and more thinly stretched. Hal Jordan has taken the fight directly to Qward, but even the man once called ‘Greatest Lantern of Them All’ may not be enough to pull this fight out of the fire…

Green Lantern #21

Or - “Cry Havoc, And Let Slip The Translucent Yellow Energy Dogs Of War.”

GL10.jpg

The first shots have been fired, and the GLC is forced to regroup from the completely unexpected attack of Sinestro. The inter-Corps Worps… Err, Car War… CORPS WAR, rather, has begun, and the first salvo was quick and brutal, fitting the personality of the vicious former Korugarian dictator who masterminded it all. With Lanterns by the dozens killed, the most experienced of the space cops sporting bloody noses, and even the Torchbearer himself corrupted, I (and more than a few of the GL’s) are wanting to know what the big blue midgets have planned as a counterstrike…
