Wanna see Seth Rogen in his Green Hornet gear?

Looks okay. Doesn’t look drastically different than the television show from back in the day.
If you want another look, head over to Splash News, that has a pic of the Green Hornet and Kato.

Variety is reporting that Christoph Waltz has joined the cast of The Green Hornet as the big bad boss that will attempt to unite the crime bosses of Los Angeles. Those who have seen “Inglourious Basterds” will recognize Waltz as the Nazi Colonel from the film.
Seth Rogen plays the titular role in “The Green Hornet,” a newspaper publisher by day who becomes a masked crime fighter at night. Asian pop star Jay Chou plays his martial arts-skilled sidekick and chauffeur Kato, while Cameron Diaz plays the love interest.
The Green Hornet is currently shooting in Los Angeles, and is scheduled for a December 17, 2010 release.
In case you were wondering, Stephen Chow is out, and Jay Chou is in as Kato in the Green Hornet movie.
“It’s an overwhelming experience to take on a role made famous by Bruce Lee. I won’t try to be Bruce Lee’s Kato – I will try to bring my own interpretation to the part. Of course, it’s a dream role, and I’m looking forward to the challenge,” said Chou in a prepared statement.
There’s also word that floated out of Wizard World Chicago this past weekend that Edward James Olmos is also on board the Green Hornet flick, although there’s no word who he will play in the Michel Gondry directed film.
The Green Hornet is still slated for a July 9, 2010 release.
Even though Stephen Chow dropped out as the director of the Seth Rogen Green Hornet film, it looked like he was still going to be on board for Kato. Then came word last week that the company was searching for a no-name to play the sidekick to the wealthy action hero.
In an interview with Ain’t It Cool News, Rogen said
We are reading many, many people from all over the globe, and it is a wild adventure. We’re just looking everywhere, honestly. We’re looking at people who are really famous overseas, and we’re looking at people who are completely unknown. We’re looking at people who are American. We’re looking at people who are martial arts experts. We’re also looking at people who don’t do any martial arts, and who do Broadway and are actors. We know what we want. And there’s some wiggle room. We’re the type of writers who can easily adapt the roles to whoever is playing it. We’ve done that on every movie we’ve ever written. But we know how we want the relationships to work, and so someone needs to fill that general role. It’s been really interesting, I can say that. You meet these people, and you’re like, “You are clearly famous in Korea! I can see from 100 feet away that you are the most famous person in whatever country you’re from!” (Laughs) And I just feel bad that we make them read with us.
Even though the production seems to be in trouble, it is moving ahead full steam with news that Nic Cage is in talks to play the big bad in the action comedy flick.

With the San Diego Comic-Con just around the corner, some of the weird from Hollywood is starting to surge to the forefront, as we present another installment of the Rapid Roundup of Tinsel Town Rumors. Some might be true, some might be outright lies, but they are all entertaining… to someone… maybe not you… maybe that cute girl on the bus would be interested in your thoughts on the subject… or maybe not. I don’t think looking at her and saying, “So what do you think about Cameron Diaz and the Green Hornet?” will get a dialogue started.

After nearly a year in Pre-Pro Hell, Seth Rogen’s green hornet is finally going before the lens next month. At one point Stephen Chow was set to direct and play Kato, but then for reasons unknown to the Intardwebz community, Chow stepped down from directing duties. The good news is, he is still in for playing the Green Hornet’s sidekick.
Pursued by police as a wanted criminal, the masked vigilante Green Hornet is actually Britt Reid, owner and publisher of muckraking journal the Daily Sentinel. Reid’s dual identity is known only to his secretary and the city district attorney.
The film now has a July 9, 2010 release date.

Dynamite Entertainment is bringing the Green Hornet back to comics, and Kevin Smith will be at the helm. According to Smith, he already has the story done.
“It’s the Hornet movie I’d make if I was making it today. And there’s no better time to do that than before Seth Rogen and Michel Gondry’s version defines the character for the mainstream. We haven’t picked an interior artist yet, but we’ve got some stellar cover talent on board already: Alex Ross, John Cassaday, Jae Lee, and David Finch.”
I wasn’t overly impressed with Smith’s Cacophony story, and he is in the middle of a new Batman story, but I do like Smith enough to give anything he’s working on a chance.
What say you, Major Spoilerites? Are you on board with Kevin Smith and the Green Hornet Comic?
Seth Rogen ought to pay attention to this flick by French filmmaker Aurenlien Poitrimoult, who’s whipped up his take on The Green Hornet.

Now this is a film, I want to see more of!

Moonstone Bookes has announced it will release a collection of short stories featuring the Green Hornet and his side-kick Kata later this year. With a movie on the way, there could be a run on Green Hornet content, and it looks like Moonstone Books is prepping itself for a potential rush.
“We’re obviously thrilled to add The Green Hornet to our stable of licensed properties,” said Moonstone publisher and The Green Hornet editor Joe Gentile. “As a huge fan, I’ve dreamed of bringing back and adding to these great characters’ legacy. It is an honor and a responsibility we take very seriously. I can’t wait to see the new crime fiction stories come in from the many talented authors we have lined up.”
The Hornet’s return has created quite a buzz among today’s top writers from mystery, suspense, science fiction and pulp fiction. Contributing authors include Harlan Ellison, Max Allan Collins, Ed Gorman, Mel Odom, Greg Cox, Will Murray, Ron Marz and scores more! Actor Van Williams, who starred in the 1960’s television show along with expert martial artist Bruce Lee as Kato, will introduce the first prose volume.
Moonstone tapped acclaimed former Disney artist Rubén Procopio, now principal of Masked Avenger Studios, to art direct and contribute cover art and interior illustrations for each volume. “It’s a dream project to explore new facets of one of my all-time favorite masked heroes… and ‘protect the rights and lives of decent citizens!’” said Procopio, recalling a memorable line from the television show.

I really don’t know what kind of chaos is going on with the Seth Rogen Green Hornet movie, but originally Stephen Chow was set to play the side-kick Kato, and direct the action/comedy. Some sort of tussle over creative differences has Chow bowing out of the directing duties, but now it looks like Michel Gondry is in talks to step in.
The choice of Gondry, the helmer behind off-the-beaten-path films such as “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind,” “The Science of Sleep” and “Be Kind Rewind,” signals that the creative direction the studio and the film’s producer, Neal Moritz, are trying to take the project is one not usually associated with the usual crime-fighter movie.
This project was announced back in 2007, but without a signed director, Green Hornet remains in Pre-Pro Hell.

Variety is reporting this morning that Stephen Chow will not direct the Seth Rogen Green Hornet film, but will still play the part of Kato. The reason cited for stepping down is creative differences, which is a shame because Kung Fu Hussle and Shaolin Soccer are two great films that redefine what martial arts movies are about, or could be about. Had Chow stayed with the picture, I’ve no doubt there would have been some great things to be seen.

Probably the most exciting news to filter through the Interwebs over the weekend, was the story of Stephen Chow signing to direct and star in the Green Hornet. Now I don’t know how many Major Spoilers readers have seen Kung Fu Hustle or Shaolin Soccer but those two flicks are great examples of how to blend action, humor, and kick-ass special effects into films that work.
My earlier fears were Judd Apatow, who is brilliant by the way, would try to tackle this film, which really wouldn’t have been a good mix, but now with this news, my interest in The Green Hornet has suddenly spiked.
Chow will play Kato to Seth Rogen’s Britt Reid (a.k.a. The Green Hornet), with the film expected to hit theaters on June 25, 2010.
Apparently it is so according to the official Sony website.

At the Superbad Panel at “the con” Seth Rogen stated the Green Hornet movie he and fellow scribe Evan Goldberg were working on would be an action movie and not a comedy.
Be that as it may, with Rogen set to star in the movie, I really wonder how people will take the film seriously. It’s kind of like Jack Black playing Green Lantern.

Columbia Pictures is expecting a summer 2009 release for the film.
Wow. Didn’t see this one coming. Apparently Seth Rogen, an actor who has been in nearly every Judd Apatow television and movie made, is in talks to to write and star in the big screen adaptation of The Green Hornet.
Seth Rogen, really? I just don’t see him playing an action role that George Clooney, Mark Wahlberg, and Jake Gyllenhaal turned down. I’m also surprised Rogen is set to write the flick that has been mired for years in pre-production hell with people like Kevin Smith and others flirting adapting the potentially huge franchise.
The good news is Rogen has a lot of writing credits under his belt including the defunct Undeclared television series, next month’s Superbad, and the upcoming The Pineapple Express.
But as the Green Hornet? I still don’t see it, but then again, who would have thought Michael Keaton would have been able to pull off Batman?
Rogen will be at the Comicon International: San Diego next week, talking up the project.
