Review: Final Crisis #3

Sunday, August 10th, 2008--by Stephen Schleicher

“You know what?  Whatever…”

crisis3picon.jpg

As I’ve mentioned before, Final Crisis is not the best crisis DC has ever put out.  As issue three hits the stands, some questions are answered, but the overall feeling of the entire series is still something that doesn’t quite seem to fit with the rest of the DCU.

Review: Final Crisis #2

Friday, June 27th, 2008--by Stephen Schleicher

You just don’t get it do you?

finalcrisis2picon.jpg

It has been a real struggle to write the reviews for Final Crisis.  Every time I pick up the book, I get angry over what I am reading, but then after a while, my blood stops boiling and I give it a second, third, and more often than not, a fourth and fifth reading to come to some kind of understanding with what Morrison is trying to accomplish.  I see and respect what he is doing, but that doesn’t mean I have to like it.

Grant Morrison: The Early Years Arrives

Tuesday, June 12th, 2007--by Stephen Schleicher

grantcover.jpgIf you are a fan of Animal, Doom Patrol, Arkham Asylum, or even Gothic, you know the name Grant Morrison. Sequart.org has released a new book examining five of Morrison’s works in detail.

Using plain language, Callahan opens up Morrison’s sometimes difficult texts and expands the reader’s appreciation of their significance, creating a study accessible to both Grant Morrison aficionados and those new to his work. An extended interview with Morrison on his early career rounds out the volume.

“The book has already garnered considerable attention online and at February’s New York Comic-Con,” says Publisher Julian Darius. “Author Timothy Callahan has been repeatedly praised in reviews of the book,” Darius reveals, “and cover artist Kevin Colden has been in the news lately for receiving — and declining — a Xeric grant.” Sequart Editor-in-Chief Mike Phillips is pleased with the final product as well. “From cover to cover,” says Phillips, “this book is an eye-opener. It really helps you appreciate the little things in Grant’s work that you may have missed the first ten times through!”
I know there are a lot of people who read comics for fun, and a lot of people who examine comics as true literature hoping to find new meaning behind the author’s work. Someone like Morrison who falls into category two tends to lose a lot of readers along the way. This book sounds like a good primer into his writing style.

Grant Morrison: The Early Years is the first in the new line of books from Sequart Research & Literacy Organization. You can read a preview of the work at the company’s website.

Batman 655: Does Morrison Pull It Off?

Wednesday, August 9th, 2006--by Stephen Schleicher

batman655picon.jpgI’m not a huge Grant Morrison fan, but I don’t hate him either. To me if you can tell a good story that has me eagerly turning from one page to the next in anticipation, then the writer has done a great job. But in the case of Morrison’s debut on the Batman title, I have to say I’m truly conflicted.
