It was only a matter of time before Amanda Waller made her presence known in Smallville, and thanks to some creative thinking at the CW, they’ve cast Pam Grier as the tough as nails agent villain. Grier will make her debut during the second hour of the Justice Society episode penned by Geoff Johns, when the two-parter airs in January.
While I think Grier will do a cracking good job, one can’t help but wonder what CCH Pounder would bring to the table – oh, right, we’ve already seen her live action Amanda Waller on the SyFy Channel’s Warehouse 13.
A couple of casting announcements have been made for the upcoming Justice Society episode of Smallville. Michael Shanks, of Stargate fame, has been cast as Hawkman, while Brent Stait of Stargate SG-1: Children of the Gods will be donning the golden helmet of Doctor Fate. Smallville has been pretty notorious for changing up the powers/look of classic DC characters for the television series, so I’m not entirely confident we’ll see either of the actors done their respective costumes for the Geoff Johns penned episode.
If we do a retcon, will it make that lawsuit go away?

Superman, Krypton, Smallville, Lex Luthor, Superboy, Lana Lang, rocket ship, super suit, heat vision, Ma and Pa Kent, glasses, and a spit curl; everything you already know about Superman’s history. The origin story has been told so many times I would bet you could walk up to some hot girl on the street and ask her about any of these, and she would know what you were talking about. So why, oh why, did DC give the light to Geoff Johns to retcon the well known origin story?

DC’s Captain Marvel has been turned over to Bill Birch and Geoff Johns to get the screenplay treatment for a future film. This is a movie that has been passed around from writer to writer for seven years before Johns and Birch were tapped to co-write their take on the kid-turned-hero-when-magic-phrase-is-uttered story. No planned release date of actors have been named for this attempt at the film.
Geoff Johns announced during the Smallville panel that he is writing an episode called Society that introduces the Justice Society of America to the Smallville universe.
Also announced during the panel is word that Allison Mack and Tom Welling will both direct episodes this season. And as we hinted at the other day, Clark Kent will don the Superman suit in the season’s debut episode. The producers do want the series to go to a 10th season, and are hoping the shows move to Friday night will help that. The appearance of Zod, played by Callum Blue, will help that as well.
The panel members also said they read all the blogs that talk about the shows – even when the talk is “mean”. Hello everyone from Smallville, take a look around, we have more Smallville stuff here too. Perhaps you might get Erica Durance to stop by and say hello…
With Blackest Night hitting full force over the next year, it really comes as no surprise that the Green Lantern: Rebirth story is getting the Absolute treatment from DC. Or at least that is what Geoff Johns is saying. And if you can’t trust Geoff Johns, you can probably trust DC when it made the announcement at the ComicsPRO meeting back in March.
There are plenty of really great tales coming out of DC, and many of them have yet to see an Absolute treatment. Is Green Lantern: Rebirth worthy, or should there be other stories that should get a bump on the list?

Poor, Solomon Grundy. Born on a Monday, died on Saturday. Ever doomed to reborn again and again, each time with a different mental state. One life he could find himself a rampaging brute, the next a gentle giant, but always the undead brought back; forever cursed, never to find rest. Until DC got a hold of him.
Red, Yellow, Green, Violet and Blue… What Kind of Lantern are You?

Geoff Johns has been spinning a tale of epic proportion across the entirety of the DC Universe, and it will hopefully pay off in this summer’s Blackest Night. Until then, readers have been given a rebooted origin story of Hal Jordan, and are currently being fed the origin stories of the rainbow corps of lanterns. We’ve seen the birth of the Red Lanterns in their blood spewing conversion, and continue to see the Yellow Lanterns and their baby stealing ways in Green Lantern Corps, but it isn’t until Green Lantern #36 do we see how the Blue and Violet Lanterns get their powers.

Geoff Johns made it official with his announcement that he is leaving Justice Society of America after issue #26.
The JSA to me represents everything good about life, work and superheroes. In life, generations past, present and future all provide different viewpoints. There can be something magical when its past from grandfather to father to son or from mother to daughter or son to grandfather. Theres nothing more important than family and family means a lot more than just blood relatives. Thats what my very first book, STARS & S.T.R.I.P.E., was about and thats what JSA, and life, is about.
So why am I leaving?
I have more stories to tell, and the characters are endless, but thats also true for the DC Universe. Im ready to move on to some other challenges like returning to THE FLASH and SUPERMAN: SECRET ORIGIN. And I am also obsessed with making sure that GREEN LANTERN, BLACKEST NIGHT and everything around it is the absolute best it can possibly be. and thats only part of 2009. There are some new projects on the horizon.
Geoff is doing a heck of a lot of work in the DCU right now – it’s almost like you can’t pick up a DC title without seeing his name on the cover. With the hype building for Blackest Night, it’s probably a good idea that Johns pulls back and focuses on the core titles. The Thy Kingdom Come storyline has been okay, but it’s also dragged on for some time, so maybe it is time for a rest. Besides, he didn’t say he wouldn’t ever write JSA again, so there is always a chance for return.
What Gog Giveth, Gog Taketh Away

What happens if you don’t do what a god tells you to do? That’s what the members of the Justice Society of America are about to find out as Gog makes a demand that not everyone is comfortable with.
Bow down to Gog

After reading the final installment of this colon series, I’m really glad DC decided to spin these one-shots and specials out of JSA. The Gog/Magog/Kingdom story has gone on long enough, and compressing four months worth of story into three one-shots solves the problem of the story grinding in place. Fortunately, Gog makes a demand that may cause the breakdown to occur.
