How could I let a week go by without featuring the big names of the Legion?  Today, it’s Gene’s take on Saturn Girl.

Who says we only have to feature the heroes from the Legion of Super Heroes universe?  Today’s Gene Gonzales entry features The Emeral Empress from the Fatal Five.  He’s a great character and rendered well by Gonzales, and thanks to 52, we now know where the Emerald Eye of Ekron came from.

A nice thing about the Legion of Super Heroes is the team is composed of both men and women, which means there’s a pretty even distribution of testosterone and estrogen that keeps artists in check.  As part of our week long look at Gene Gonzales’ take on the Legion of Super Heroes, we take a look at Timber Wolf, who may or may not look an awful lot like another character from another company…

Our Gene Gonzales/Legion of Super Heroes theme continues this week, with a look at Duo Damsel. Seems appropriate, since yesterday’s entry featured Computo.

You probably guessed after seeing the last two days worth of Art Appreciation Moment entries, that I’m focusing on Gene Gonzales this week.  Why? I like his style, and I think he doesn’t get enough attention – especially when he is drawing the Legion of Super-Heroes.  So why not take the jump and get a look at his interpretation of Braniac 5?

If you’re looking for Legion of Super-heroes sketches, you can’t go wrong with the works of Gene Gonzales.

I like this costume. I really do. One of the earliest Superboy and the Legion of Super-Heroes I ever bought was issue 203. In that issue Invisible Kid dies. Phantom Girl was in quite a bit of that story and I really liked her hair, the costume, and her personality. And she has her hair in pony tails! C’mon! :)

This is ink on 11″ x 17″ Strathmore Bristol Board. I will be putting up this one, Wildfire, and Duo Damsel on eBay tonight for anyone interested.

I REALLY wish I had the money to put Gene Gonzales on retainer to whip up sketches and drawings for this site (and my wall at Stately Spoiler Manor) because I really dig on everything he does.  Since this is the Legion of Super Heroes week, I’m giving everyone a treat for Friday, and serving up three sketches by Gene featuring two of the ladies of the LoSH.  Phantom Girl and Apparition are two different takes on the same character, but in Gene’s hands, the character really looks different.

What’s a LoSH?  You haven’t been reading the Hero Histories, have you?
