The game has been slowing, but finally gamers got a look at Jim Lee’s DC Universe Online game. While it is a MMO (Massive Multiplayer Online) game, the trailer below only shows NPC heroes and villains duking it out. If this game has the scope and grandeur of World of Warcraft, then I’m sold.
The trailer for the upcoming game has hit the Interwebnets.
I haven’t been a big fan of the Mortal Kombat series since the mid-90s, and I’m pretty sure I’m going to give this game a pass as well. Anyone eagerly anticipating this?

While I’m sure there are those of you who would just love to play Gears of War on a huge movie theater screen - or at least something larger than your 42-inch television, New Line has announced it is in production for a live action version of the game that will appear in a local theater near you.
Set on the planet Sera, the game thrusts players into a battle for survival between humans and a race of creatures that surface from the bowels of the planet known as the Locust Horde. Players assume identities of soldiers on Delta Squad as they fight to save Sera’s inhabitants.
Len Wiseman is set to direct the flick based on a script by Chris Morgan, the man behind Wanted, and the upcoming Fast and the Furious 4.
Video game adaptations are a tricky lot with Hollywood and gamers. On the one hand, something like the Resident Evil franchise has done quite well, while others, like Doom, have totally sucked. And let’s not even get into those Pokemon movies.
What are your thoughts? Will Gears of War rock, or tank?
Boom! Studios has announced the appointment of Ian Brill as the company’s Games Workshop Editor.
Brill will helm BOOM!’s Warhammer, Warhammer 40,000 and Blood Bowl line of comics while providing steady leadership and unique insight to the expanding BOOM! catalog as the company continues its explosive growth.
“I’m thrilled to see what ideas Ian will bring to the table,” said Mark Waid, BOOM! Studios Editor-in-Chief in a prepared statement. “BOOM! continues to bring in top talent with various backgrounds, which gives us a cutting edge in what used to be a two-company market.”
If you are a gamer, enjoy playing Warhammer, and love MMORPGs, then you will probably love getting in on the Beta of the new Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning coming from EA Mythic.
Boom Studios and EA Mythic have teamed up to give readers of Warhammer: Condemned by Fire #1 a one in five chance to get in on the beta test. Each copy of the first issue will contain a scratch card, and with really good odds, I’m guessing there are going to be a lot of satisfied readers and gamers out there Of course even with those odds, there’s no guarantee that you’ll get in on the beta if you buy five copies of the issue.
“As a crossover promotion, this is an excellent chance to expose WARHAMMER ONLINE fans to the ongoing narrative of the comic book,” said Chip Mosher, Director of Marketing and Sales for BOOM!. “It also positions Direct Market retailers with a hot, interesting product to generate new traffic for their stores with a comic that can snag new readers who might come for the promotion and stay for the story.”
I gotta agree with Chip here. Thinking outside the box and figuring out ways of cross promoting these different target markets can lead to some very good things down the road.
More on the series and cover images after the jump.
Yes, you read that title correctly, the Silent Devil graphic novel is being turned into a d20 role-playing supplement using the Dungeons and Dragons system.
D&D players will thrill to the campaign set in Arthur’s Camelot and specialized weaponry to combat the vampire menace. Other players can actually take up the mantle of a vampire knight and try and extinguish the hope of humanity forever!
THe game called Vampires vs. Knights is being developed by Tony DiGerolamo.
“Adam Beranek, one of the co-creators of DvKA, and I are thrilled Tony agreed to write the game based on our concept,” says screenwriter/graphic novelist Christian Beranek. “Fans will be able to create their own characters and adventures — there are going to be many awesome battles between knights and vampires for years to come.”
It should be noted that Christian Beranek also wrote the screenplay for the upcoming Dracula vs. King Arthur movie. The game will be in stores in the Spring of 2009, and you can catch a demo of the game at select conventions between now and then.
WizKids has announced it has sold out its entire Crisis inventory in the U.S. and Canada. Because of the scarcity, WizKids will be importing a limited number of booster packs from Europe, but after those are gone, the worldwide supply of the game figures will be gone.
“We are pleased and surprised with the outstanding results of the sale of Crisis,” said Joe Hauck, WizKids® executive vice president. “Diamond and Alliance sold in two weeks what historically would have sold over the course of four months. The tie-ins between this HeroClix set and the rich DC Comics storylines created a product that really resonates with our total customer base.”
The company claims the success of the sell out is due in part to its “Buy by the Brick” campaign.

This morning during the Q4 conference call it was asked if Marvel had thought about going into the game market after the announcements of several companies dropping Marvel games (Microsoft’s Marvel MMO). In a nutshell, Marvel did say it was not pursuing this venture at this time.
However, knowing that Marvel also says they have no plans to reprint sold out issues, only to turn around a couple of weeks later, makes me wonder how long we will have to wait until the Marvel MMO game is resurrected by the company.
Even with my speculation, I can understand why Marvel would be hesitant to jump into the game market, especially with a huge amount of money tied up in Marvel Studios films that are scheduled to be released over the next decade.

I love playing World of Warcraft. I just wish I had more time to play it. MMORPG are really fun and so emersive that you can detach from the real world very easily. While I never got into City of Heroes - the super hero online game, I was interested in checking out Marvel’s attempt to break into this particular game market.
It’s too bad the game has been cancelled.
Marvel Universe Online (the heavily anticipated MMO based on the Marvel comic book universe) is officially dead, according to Shane Kim, the Corporate Vice President of Microsoft Game Studios.
Kim told MTV’s Stephen Totilo in an interview at the recent DICE show: “There’s basically one that’s successful and everything else wouldn’t meet our level or definition of commercial success. And then you have to look [and say]: ‘Can we change the business model for that?’”
So there you go. With over 6 million players world wide, World of Warcraft is the big gorilla when it comes gaming. What kind of message does that send when you decide to bow out if you can’t be the top game instead of being satisfied with a mediocre following?
