This week, Stephen and Matthew take a peek under the hood of Wonder Woman #37 and hope the Princess of Themyscira doesn’t crack them on the head too hard.

It makes me really happy to read about groups and organizations coming to the aid of comic creators who have fallen on some hard times.  John Ostrander has been suffering from glaucoma for years, and a recent round of highly expensive surgeries have found the comic writer in a bit of financial trouble, as his insurance won’t pay for the corrective surgery.

At the 2009 Chicago Comic-Con, we’ve joined forced with Wizard Entertainment to hold a charity auction the evening of Saturday August 8th. Our goal is to raise sufficient funds to help cover the costs of John’s treatments and it is John’s expressed wish that should we raise funds above his needs, that excess money is to be donated to The Hero Initiative to help them continue their great works aiding comic creators in their times of need.

If you can’t go to the convention, but still want to help, head over to  Comix4Sight and make a donation to aid John Ostrander.  As someone who is going through some eye issues himself, I know how important being able to see clearly is.  And while you’re over at the Comix4sight site, be sure to check out Gail Simone’s thoughts on what’s going on.  My understanding from Gail’s Twitter feed is she is seeking art donations at the San Diego Comic Con this week.

In which Genocide walks the Earth

wonderwoman26picon.jpg

The DCU experienced a year without Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman, and since the One Year Later return, things have not been so good.  Superman got his powers back, only to discover he is no longer the last son of Krypton thanks to the New Krypton story line.  Batman went on a spiritual journey in which he killed Batman, returned as Batman, only to “die” in the pages of the R.I.P. arc and Final Crisis (two different titles to kill Batman?  That’s one bad S.O.B.).  Now it’s Wonder Woman’s turn to experience the one thing that might be here undoing – Genocide.

wonderwoman26variant.jpgDC Comics has announced Aaron Lopresti has created a variant cover to Wonder Woman #26, by Gail Simone.

Following months of speculation over a new, male Wonder Woman and his fellow Manazons, WONDER WOMAN #26 puts the rumors to rest. In this issue, learn what horrific new threat Special Agent Diana Prince is unknowingly leading her team of agents against. And, at long last, the fate of the Amazons is revealed.

The issue is scheduled to be in stores on November 26, 2008.

DC has also announced it is publishing new editions of the Transmetropolitan trade paperbacks to meet demands of retailers.  All the information about the new trades can be found after the jump.

Batman eats burritos?  That can’t be good…

Aaron Lopresti signed an exclusive contract with DC back in November, and now we learn he will be the artist on Gail Simone’s Wonder Woman beginning with issue #20.

The offer came about two weeks later and I just could not turn down working on not only one of the DC icons but a pop culture icon as well. Now I can actually have a conversation with someone outside of comics and they will actually have heard of the character Im drawing.

Can’t wait to see how Simone’s writing and Lopresti’s art mesh.

DC Comics announced the creative team of Gail Simone, Terry and Rachel Dodson will not debut, as intended, with Wonder Woman #13, but instead will kick off their run starting with Wonder Woman #14.

Instead, WONDER WOMAN #13 will feature a story by J. Torres with art by Julian Lopez & Bit and a cover by Terry Dodson & Rachel Dodson. In this issue, the war with the Amazons may be over, but the wounds haven’t even begun to heal. Wonder Woman has her hands full with anti-Amazon sentiment in America, much of it targeted toward Wonder Girl! When it comes to hate and fear, even a magic lasso can only do so much!

According to Senior Editor Matt Idelson, the one month push allows Terry Dodson to catch up on a few other commitments first.

I’m sure fans are going to be slightly miffed they don’t get the Simone Wonder Woman for another month, but I have feeling, once it starts, it is going to rock.

Last weekend was just too crazy for a Fun Panel of the Week, but I think this week makes up for it with these two panels from The All New Atom #14.

wonderwomanbw.jpgYou guessed it yesterday, and it was confirmed today by DC’s VP of Sales Bob Wayne; Gail Simone will be the new writer of Wonder Woman. Hooray! Now keep the Dodsons on board for the art, and DC will have a number one book before they know it.

Congrats go out to Gail on this dream job!

Or – “How Much Does A Life-Sized Painting Of A Woman COST?”

reviewbubble.jpgbp2.jpgGenerally speaking, real people don’t ever worry about something as nebulous as “diversity.” As I travel through the universe, trying to get to the bank on time, working a 55 hour week, balance parenting with acting like a child, and occasionally let loose my million monkeys to type these here reviews, I seldom worry about whether, statistically speaking, women are sufficiently represented in the boardroom. DC has recently made great strides in populating their titles with more than just squared-jawed, dark-haired men in their early thirties, but I can’t help but point out that this tidal wave was preceded by Birds of Prey mainstays Dinah and Barbara over a decade ago. I can’t think of any other books circa 1996 that have reached the 100 mark… Anybody got one that I missed?

Oh, and, by the way, what’s actually happening IN THE BOOK?

Or – “Birds1.jpgHow many Batgirls IS this now, anyway?”

When I started picking up the original Birds of Prey miniseries, (Good gracious, has it actually been ten years?) I did it with three thoughts in mind: First, to support a book with female protagonists. Second, because Oracle was a fave-rave character from her run in ‘Suicide Squad.’ And finally, because when a tall blonde woman wears a bolero jacket and fishnets, she has my undivided attention.
