Or - “Because I’ve Fallen Further Behind Than Ever Before…”

I have to tell you, two weeks of being unable to type without crying like a little girl really makes your work pile up. The last couple of weeks of comics have been a tumultuous ride, with a whole lot of minor things happening that made me happy. An old favorite disappoints, while a surprise contender impresses the heck out of me. British vampires, time-lost Arcturans, underground civilizations, the chupacabra, and a fifty-foot stalk of marijuana await you, beyond the fold!

Or - “It’s Always Sad When You See People Make Mistakes You’ve Already Made…”

Freshmen was one of those series that really captured my attention and fascination when it came out. The story of a group of new college students given super-abilities based on what they were thinking about at the time, the first series had beautiful covers, compelling stories and dialogue, and a cast that I not only like, but recognized from my college days. It’s sequel has had a lot of scheduling issues (4 issues have come out since last summer) and they’ve irritated me by having a continuing lenticular cover that is only available in a 1:25 variant when no one in Topeka (or, apparently, even Northeast KANSAS) orders enough issues to GET one… But is it enough to offset my enjoyment?

Top Cow has announced Jorge Correa will come on board as the new penciler for Freshmen II #5 and #6.
Who is Jorge Correa?
Jorge Correa is a native of So Paulo, Brazil. He majored in art at ABRA (Academia Brasileira de Artes) and also at Fbrica de Quadrinhos (today known as Quanta Academia de Artes) studying under established industry artists such as Ivan Reis and Marc Campos. Correa’s inking work has appeared in Lady Death, Chastity, Dungeons & Dragons, and Superman. As a penciler his credits include Pirates Of The Caribbean and Stargate SG1. Correa will take over from original series artist Will Conrad to complete the final two issues of the Freshmen II limited series.
Top Cow has sent a five page preview of issue #5 that will ship in mid-June.
Or - “Apparently, I’ll Only Be Reviewing The Odd Issues Of This Title…”

But, really, aren’t they all alittle odd? If you’re wondering what happened to my rundown of issue #2, well… thereupon hangs a tale: I decided after my lukewarm response tothe first issue(compounded by the length of time between issues) not to recap the rest of Freshman II, a decision borne out by my overall feeling of “meh” when reading issue #2. So, why am I doing it now? Remember yesterday when I (jokingly) said I should recap something I didn’t like? I went through the stack of things to be reviewed (which sits right next to my stack of comics to go into my office/spare bedroomto be filed away) and couldn’t find anything heinous, grabbed the issue that most closely fit the bill, and went to bed. This morning, I grabbed the first book off the stack of things to be reviewed, and am only just now realizing that it wasn’t the book I chose to recap, but the top book of the OTHER pile, which had slipped offit’s own stackduring the night. (Notice, I never said it was an INTERESTING tale…) Since it’s Tuesday, and I won’t have time to write tonight when I’m again home with my comics, (It’s ‘Idol’ & ‘House’ night) here we are. But perhaps, we’ll all be a little bit more careful about stacking slippery bagged comic books eh? Knowing IS half the battle! PORK CHOP SANDWICHES?

The second Freshmen series just keeps building and building. Issue 3 is hitting the stands soon and Top cow sent Major Spoilers a sneak peek at the issue that reveals an all new enemy for the team. The on-going series also dives deeper into Mr. Fiddlesticks.
Top Cow Productions let us know they have created a special supplemental issue, entitled Freshmen II #1.5, and have made it available for free on the Freshmen website (www.freshmencomic.com). This online issue expands the story for some of the characters in the group.
This story is a stopgap between issues #1 and #2, and it develops a subplot that explores the relationship between Brady and Renee through Annalee’s powers. It’s a simple, quiet story featuring just a couple of our kids, and it’ll reveal the finer details of a shortcut we’re taking in developing the plot between the first two issues., commented writer and co-creator, Hugh Sterbakov.
According to Sterbakov, you don’t need to read #1.5 in order to enjoy issue #2.
If you missed the first six issue run of the Freshmen created by Seth Green and Hugh Sterbakov, head over to Drunk Duck and read the first issue there (www.drunkduck.com/Freshmen).
Top cow has sent Major Spoilers a sneak peek at Freshman II #2, which is scheduled to be in stores December 20, 2006. Take the jump for the seven page preview and issue description.
