What happens when Joss Whedon and company don’t jump on the sequel/prequel opportunities fast enough?

Fan films.

More specifically Dr. Horrible: Horrible Turn, a fan created origin story.

Here’s the trailer. We’ll see if anything becomes of it in 8 days.

What do you think?

We’ve talked about fan films quite a bit here at Major Spoilers, but sometimes instead of talking, it’s better to watch the fan film play out before your eyes.

Who would have guessed watching medical tapes from Arkham would be this interesting.

More over at YouTube

I can’t wait for this online production to hit (gotta wait until October).  Until then, the guys over at Mercury Men Pictures have posted extended trailer for the web series.

I got a chuckle out of this, you might find it humorous, or you might run out of the room screaming.

I dig on fan films.  Really well done fan films.  The fan film allows creative types to present their vision of a particular property to the world. It’s just too bad that so many companies poo-poo the notion and rain on the parade of those who truly drink in the property.  The good news is George Lucas is as keen on fan films as I am, and embraces the notion of fans creating and expanding the Star Wars universe.  For nine years now, Lucasfilm, Ltd. and Atom.com have teamed for a Star Wars fan film contest, and want you to cast your vote before the end of the day today!

At the very least, if you don’t vote, you can at least check out the entrants before the winners are announced at the San Diego Comic-Con on Friday, July 24, 2009.

We talked about Fan Films on one of the previous Major Spoilers Podcasts, and I’m always amazed at what fans can put together when given enough time and passion.

This trailer for a never to be made Green Lantern film has Nathan Fillion playing Hal Jordan, and if the final movie is half as good as this trailer, then I’ll be happy.

Take the jump for a breakdown of shots.

I love well produced indie films – especially when they are episodic, as it gives me more time to enjoy the work, and share it with the rest of the world.  This trailer combines the best of 50’s sci-fi with a noir feel, and best of all A BRAIN IN A JAR!

More info at The Mercury Men website, include a very awesome poster that reminds me a lot of Darwyn Cooke’s New Frontier (or Saul Bass posters from the 60’s).  Too bad we have to wait until the fall to see the whole thing.

I don’t know what to say…

Heh… This is a Monarch…y.

Major Spoilers Fan Film

Plus: Doctor Peter Coogan returns for an analysis of why the other geeks are all better than you (and by you, I mean Stephen) and why they do that voodoo that they do so very well. Also, we wanna hear what you wanna hear! plus: Matthew delves into poetry.

Tonight on the Major Spoilers Podcast, the crew will be talking Fan Films.  Joining the crew on the show are Dr. Peter Coogan and author Clive Young, as everyone runs down some of their favorites.  To get you in the mood, we’re presenting a selection of some of the films we’ll discuss on tonight’s show.

Here’s a recommendation from one of the Major Spoilers Legion Elite.

In this short film, DC Comics’ resident badass, Lobo, is sent to track down Jolly old Saint Nick. Prepare for the glorious Yuletide Ultra Violence!

Warning: Some rough language and violence in this one.

While fan films have been around for a while, Duality by Crew of Two happened to be one of the first Star Wars Fan Films that incorporated huge amounts of computer generated effects to tell the story.  All of the sets in this piece are computer generated, with the actors shot against a blue and green screen.  I’ve lost track of the guys behind this piece, but I know somewhere in my piles of stuffs I have some of the original footage from this piece before the keying and effects were layered in.

RYAN WIEBER VS. MICHAEL “DORKMAN” SCOTT

What began as a friendly rivalry between two effects artists explodes off TheForce.Net’s FanFilms Forum and into the real world in a lightsaber battle royale.

Originally created for the forum’s lightsaber choreography competition, this fight to the death will decide once and for all who is truly most skilled with a saber.

There can be only one.

For even more fun, check out Ryan vs. Dorkman II, after the jump.

(Part 1 of 5) Parts one and two are halves of a 12 minute short depicting the origin of “The Bat-Man” and introducing his amazing skills and abilities… Bob Kane and Bill Finger drew on a lot of silent films to create Batman, and I’ve always wanted to give the story a try using silent film techniques. What with that whole copyright/waste of time thing, you’ll have to settle for this collage. Here are the original influences re-arranged to tell Bruce Wayne’s story and his crusade against crime. A bit of fun not intended for sale or commercial exploitation… what with the huge commercial value of silent films and everything.
