Dynamo 5 #5

Or - “You Just Wait Until Your Father Gets Home!”

D510.jpg

When the Dynamo 5 team was put together, it was with the intent of protecting Tower City from the late Captain Dynamo’s greatest foes.  Instead, they’ve found themselves cleaning up the various messes left behind by Daddy’s insecurities, infidelities, and sundry non-heroic acts.  Now, with the return of Captain Dynamo (without even having a clone, a cyborg, and an armored version of him running about…) the very idea behind their assemblage has been called into question, and the D5 finds that things aren’t nearly as clear-cut.  A deceased hero’s flaws can be overlooked, but when your deadbeat dad is flying over the city, I suspect it’s a bit harder to ignore…

Or - “Five Ways Father’s Day Can Really Suck…”

D510.jpg

Growing up, my family never paid much attention to Mother’s or Father’s Day.  I’m not sure if that’s because it was the 70’s and they weren’t full-on commercial juggernauts yet, or if we just didn’t much care…  Either way, the various children of Captain Dynamo are about the celebrate their first Father’s Day since the reveal of their true parentage, and I predict that they’ll all have a fine time with nary a hitch. However, it should be noted that I predicted that Civil War would end with Captain Ultra and the 3-D Man joining the Avengers, so there’s a chance my prognostications are less than perfect…

Or - “What Happens When People Stop Being Polite, And Start Bludgeoning Things.”

D510.jpg

Well, folks…  It’s official.  I have reached the bottom of the review pile, and thus our “Two A Days” have ended (at least until I get snowed under again, or happen to be bored.)  With luck, we can now get books up in a more timely manner, fingers crossed.  I hope I haven’t inundated you with so much recappiness that you’ve returned to googling “Hot Russian Women In Leather Panties” (see how many hits THAT nets us!) or, perish forbid, playing Kitten Cannon.  In either case, we’re back with a look at the title that proves super-powers are may be thicker than water, but some people are just plain thick…  Ba DUMP bum.

Or - “Papa Was A Rollin’ Stone, Whever He Hung His Cape Was His Home...”

D510.jpg

Many people have pointed out the recurring thread in Walt Disney movies regarding the lack or loss of a mother figure and it’s effect on the resulting stories.  But there is also the obvious, but little discussed fact that a huge number of our favorite comic book stories are predicated on the loss of, lack of, or abuse by paternal figures…  or, to use fewer syllables, they’ve got ’Daddy issues.’  Witness Peter Parker’s guilt over not saving his surrogate father, Uncle Ben.  The pre-Crisis Superman was so defined by the guilt over the death of his father (and his mother, to be fair), that there was a huge outcry when John Byrne rewrote history to leave the Kents alive.  Batman’s paternal influence is obvious, but more quietly, look at how Brian Banner’s abuse shaped the nascent Bruce (and splintered off his Hulk personality) or how Charles Xaver’s distaste for his half-brother Cain Marko was partly induced by the rampages of Cain’s tough-guy abusive dad.  The lives of Dick Grayson, Tim Drake, and Jason Todd speak volumes about their interactions with their father figure, as absent from their lives in a metaphorical way as papa Thomas Wayne was absent from his Bruce’s.  With all that subtext out there, it’s nice to see someone take this notion and bring it to the forefront, and that’s exactly what Jay Faerber has done in “Dynamo 5,” with interesting results…

Dynamo 5 Debuts in March

Wednesday, December 20th, 2006--by Image Comics

unknown.jpgCaptain Dynamo was the world’s greatest super-hero.  His adventures inspired millions, who stand in shock at the news of his death.  But as he’s being set to rest, his family learns that with great power came great infidelity.  Now, as Captain Dynamo’s ememies descend upon his city, his widow must round up his five illegitimate children – each with one of their father’s spectacular powers – to fill the void he left in their world, and to start filling the one he left in their lives.  Image proudly announces the mind-blowing debut of Jay Faerber’s new ongoing series, DYNAMO 5!

“Dynamo 5 is about the human aspect of being superhuman,” says series creator Jay Faerber.  “Most super-hero teams are made up of strangers who act like a family, but DYNAMO 5 is a family who act like strangers.  They never asked for these powers, they never knew the man they inherited them from, and they don’t know each other, but now they need to band together to overcome the total chaos that their father held back.  It’s a very action driven series that also emphasizes the big ideas that we’ve all had to grapple with in our own lives.”

Joining Faerber is rising star Mahmud Asrar, who brings his incredible new vision to comics.  “Mahmud’s art is unbelievably sharp and dynamic.” says Faerber. “He took my story and brought it to another level. This guy loves superheroes and is putting that passion into every page.”
