If you’ve followed Major Spoilers for any length of time you know two things; 1) I’m a big Doc Savage fan, and 2) I’m a bigger Batman fan. With DC’s release of Batman/Doc Savage Special #1, one would think I’d be in seventh heaven, on a high no other fanboy could achieve. You can think whatever you want, that doesn’t necessarily make it so.
The Batman/Doc Savage Special arrives from DC Comics this week, but I really can’t wait to see what DC has planned for Doc and his crew. The issue includes a sketchbook from the upcoming First Wave series, and while I like Phil Noto’s work, I really want to see more of Brian Azzarello’s take on the characters.
Back in the day, James Bama was the man when it came to Doc, but it was always so hard to really get a close look at Monk, Ham, Long Tom, Renny, and Johnny. Thanks to this peek from The Source, we now know what we can expect to see down the road. Oddly, if one looks long enough, the Fabulous Five start to look like Wolverine, Tony Stark, Hulk, Phil Sheldon, and my 12th grade science professor.
I’m really torn over the announcement that the Doc Savage movie now has writers on board. On the one hand, I’m super excited about seeing a new Doc Savage movie hit the big screen, as the 1975 version really blew (for many reasons) and caused more than one career to crash and burn. On the other hand, writers are Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman are producing. Don’t get me wrong, I think the duo are exceptionally talented – especially when it comes to Star Trek. However, these are also the brains behind Transfomers 2, and after that experience, anytime I see their names attached to a project a red flag goes up.
Fortunately, it looks like they won’t be writing the Doc Savage script. Instead, those duties fall to Shane Black, of Lethal Weapon and Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang fame. And it looks like he’s going to do it right.
I did inquire if they were modernizing the character. I asked this with dread in my belly, and Shane passed the test by saying the character can not be separated from the 30s. This is correct. Right now, he is preparing to write the script. He has decided that Doc needs to have his Fabulous Five. It will be an original DOC SAVAGE story that attempts to encapsulate the feeling of the whole collection of Lester Dent’s work.
Well my hopes have been raised, and it’s great news to kick off the week.
UPDATE: Ain’t It Cool News is now stating Orci and Kurtzman are not producing the Doc Savage film, but instead the producers are Neal Moritz and Ori Marmur. Makes me feel a bit better about the film. Now let’s go find us a Doc Savage!

Oh man! DC Comics released a preview of the upcoming Batman/Doc Savage Special #1 yesterday, both online and in the DC books. Written by Brian Azzerello with art by Phil Noto has me super excited about the issue when it arrives November 11!

I can’t wait to see what DC has in store for the first wave of heroes as they resurrect Doc Savage and crew and throw them in the world of 1939 Batman, the Spirit, Blackhawks and more, an it kicks off with the Batman/Doc Savage Special hitting in November. I’ll be really curious to see how much on-going interaction Doc and Batman have with one another, and I’m wondering if DC will touch on Doc’s institute where they perform lobotomies on criminals, and if there will be a confrontation between any of the heroes. I’ll also be curious to see if DC somehow manages to get The Shadow in on all the action as well. There could very well be some interesting stories featuring Batman and The Shadow teaming and seeing the real parallels between the two characters and how The Shadow influenced the Bat.
Anyone else excited to see Doc Savage return to comics, or all you all too young to remember who he is?
DC already announced that Doc Savage was returning to DC Comics, but what we didn’t know is if the Man of Bronze would be part of the DCU continuity proper. Yesterday, DC released information that seems to answer that pressing question.
During the Wiz World Philly DC Nation Panel, DC EIC Dan Didio gave a bit more news on the upcoming Doc Savage series coming out of the company.
Didio then revealed that DC would bring back the classic pulp hero Doc Savage via a monthly series to be written by Brian Azarello (”100 Bullets”) and drawn by Rags Morales. Morales said that the series will bring Savage into the DCU, though it will take place in an alternate universe where he will work and interact alongside such classic characters as Blackhawk and Will Eisner’s The Spirit. The world Savage lives in will also be a blend of our modern era and the classic ‘30s pulp era he comes from (”cell phones and tommy guns” as DiDio put it). No news was given about a release date yet.
Glad it is a monthly, glad it is being set on a different Multiverse Earth, glad they aren’t trying to bring back the last DC Comics Doc Savage series.

Could DC really be bringing Doc Savage back to comic books? Will they try to resurrect the Doc Savage and Son series from the late 1980’s that started well, but failed in the end? Who is attached to that mysterious shadow on the other wall? Could this be a page from grant morrison’s Multiversity, The Spirit meeting another contemporary, or is this simply Adam Strange striking a familiar pose?

Continuing with our Pulp Hero Art Appreciation Moment Week, Matt Bennett takes a crack out my most favorite pulp hero of all time – Doc Savage: The Man of Bronze!
I usually only try to feature one artist per day, but I got such a kick out of Scott Godlewski’s work on Sunday, that I wanted to feature him again.
This week we’re going to go with another theme for our Art Appreciation Moments of the Day. This week the theme is Pulp Heroes, and kicking us off is the sketch by Scott Godlewski featuring a great group shot of the heroes.

This is probably the best news I’ve heard all day. At the Doc Savage panel, Michael Uslan, the fellow producing the Captain Marvel film, said there was a new Doc Savage film in the works.
The final two installments of Moonstone Books solicitations for September have arrived, and if you are a fan of Buckaroo Banzai, there is a good chance you are a fan of Doc Savage too (I know I am). Coming in September the company will release the Doc Savage Radio Scripts written by Lester Dent himself! These lost scripts haven’t seen the light of day since the 1940s and many have never been seen before. Quite an addition to your Doc Savage trophy room.
