Look! Up in the sky! It’s a bird! It’s a plane! It’s a guy with a jetpack and goofy helmet! No, it’s… well, yeah, OK, you got it right the third time. The Rocketeer, based on the short-lived comic created by Dave Stevens, was one of my first forays into comic books and film. I honestly can’t remember if I actually had seen it in the theater (I was 5, after all. And now I’ve made some of you feel old. Sorry about that.), but I do remember the various advertising, toys, commercials, and even a cartoon (which may have well been a figment of my young imagination, since I can’t find a trace of it now), and I clearly remember wanting to BE The Rocketeer. As years went by, I eventually forgot about The Rocketeer little by little(hence my spotty memory), but always got a little excited whenever someone mentioned the be-helmeted hero.

As a young tyke running around the vast expanse of the family farm, I had was limited to the types of comic books I was allowed to read. When I got older and was allowed to drive it became anything goes, but when you’re a kid and your parents are buying you comics to read, you can’t go wrong with Uncle Scrooge. Twenty-seven years later, Uncle Scrooge is once readily available to children of all ages thanks to Boom! Studios, and it proves you can relieve your childhood.

The release date for Toy Story 3 draws ever closer, and Disney has sent Major Spoilers the new trailer to the movie.

The creators of the beloved “Toy Story” films re-open the toy box and bring moviegoers back to the delightful world of Woody, Buzz and our favorite gang of toy characters in TOY STORY 3. Woody and Buzz had accepted that their owner Andy would grow up someday, but what happens when that day arrives? In the third installment, Andy is preparing to depart for college, leaving his loyal toys troubled about their uncertain future. Lee Unkrich (co-director of “Toy Story 2” and “Finding Nemo”) directs this highly anticipated film, and Michael Arndt, the Academy Award®-winning screenwriter of “Little Miss Sunshine,” brings his unique talents and comedic sensibilities to the proceedings. TOY STORY 3 will be presented in Disney Digital 3D™ in select theaters.

Boom! Studios announced yesterday that it has signed a distribution agreement with Haven Distributors.  The deal has Haven distributing all second printings of the monthly comics to the direct market.

“Retailers have been begging us to get our second prints into their stores at a faster pace for the past year,” said BOOM! Studios CEO Ross Richie. “We’re happy to be able to offer retailers another choice in getting an important part of our product line to their stores and into the hands of their customers.”

It’s interesting this announcement has been made, especially in light of the troubles going on at Diamond with continued cutbacks and staff layoffs.  Before you jump to conclusions about the major distributor collapsing, keep in mind Boom! does have distribution deals with Simon and Schuster, and Harper Collins Canada, and Kable Distribution Services.  Boom! has done a great deal to market itself, and ensuring comics get into the hands of potential readers faster is a good sign.

Leaping Love Story

MickeyMouseFriends_296_PICON.jpg

Mickey Mouse is one of those timeless characters that everyone knows. From his first appearance in the Steamboat Willie short back in 1928, he has proven time and time again that he’s a hard mouse to keep down. While his contemporaries may have faded like the ink they where drawn in, Mickey Mouse has gained more popularity year after year. He is one of the few characters that can connect through almost any culture, and now he has come to Boom Studios. I got the chance to read Mickey Mouse and Friends #296, the first issue from Boom Kids division of Boom Studios. Was it a success or just another mouse tale? Find out after the jump…

A Christmas Carol

A Christmas Carol opens nationwide on November 6, 2009.

For the past 15 months, Buzz Lightyear – or rather the Buzz Lightyear action figure/toy – spent time floating around the International Space Station as part of a NASA – Disney educational outreach program. Coincidentally, Buzz returned to Earth on September 11th, just in time to promote this weekend’s Toy Story and Toy Story 2 Digital 3D double feature.  Who’s going to see the movies again on the big screen?
