If you would rather read your comics in electronic form, then you’ll be happy to hear that Boom! Studios has placed Mark Waid’s Irredeemable comic on the iPhone for all to buy. It’s all part of the deal with Comixology – which means you’ll need to buy the $1.99 Comixology app before buying the 99-cent comic.

“In superhero comics, pretty much everyone who’s called upon to put on a cape is, at heart, emotionally equipped for the job. I reject that premise,” said series writer and BOOM! Studios Editor-in-Chief Mark Waid. “IRREDEEMABLE is, in a way, my third and most complex chapter on the cost of superheroics – a pulp adventure tale of horror exploring how the lessons we learn about right and wrong as children can become warped and twisted when challenged by the realities of the adult world.”

The first four issues are available through the Comixology Comics App, now.

Sony has announced a new feature for PSP owners – comic books!

At gamescom in Cologne, Germany, Sony Computer Entertainment Europe announced the digital reader for PSPTM (PlayStation®Portable), a new service that will allow PSP owners to access a range of media on their PSP. The digital reader service will be launched with Digital Comics this December, putting PSP owners in control of a huge library of Digital Comics from several provider partners including—you guessed it,  Marvel!

The Digital Comics service will allow owners to download select titles, which you can then read page by page or frame by frame.

“PSP’s new digital reader offers an unprecedented consumer experience that will extend the world of Marvel from print pages into the hands of fans around the world. We are excited to be part of this launch,” said Ira Rubenstein, executive vice president, global digital media group, Marvel Entertainment.

It’s interesting that Marvel decided to jump on the PSP bandwagon for the next stage of digital comics.  On the one hand the screen for the PSP is much larger than what Apple is offering up with its iPhone, but on the other hand, one wonders how many people have a PSP?  I still have one, but its been ages since it’s been turned on, and I’m not even sure i know where the damn thing is.

What say you Major Spoilerites?  Is Marvel Digital Comics on PSP a good thing or a bad one?

Over the weekend at Heroes Con, Rantz Hoseley, the editor behind Image’s “Comic Book Tattoo” anthology of comics inspired by Tori Amos, unveiled Longbox, a digital comics platform that Hoseley thinks will be the iTunes of comic books.  Hoseley is using a similar model, hoping to sell digital comics for 99-cents each.  Already on board are Top Cow Productions and Boom! Studios.

“Everyone’s been talking now for half a decade about the holy grail of digital comics, and how do you solve that problem: How do you make something that everyone gets on board with?” Hoseley told CBR. “And rather than just kind of jump into it willy-nilly, we’ve done a lot of research and actual development on the platform prior to even discussing it with any publishers.”

While iTunes allows you to activate five system to listen to your MP3s, the Longbox software will only allow you to read your digital comics on three devices.  If you are interested in becoming a beta-tester, you’ll need to attend the San Diego Comic-Con panel for the low down.

From the screen shots I’ve seen, and the passion Hoseley has for the project, I hope it works.  I also hope the company eventually opens the program to other applications beyond the PC, Mac, and Linux systems, because as soon as those eBooks come in color, it might put Longbox Digital Comics out of business.

As the new Transformers movie makes its debut overseas, IDW dropped off a note to remind us that Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen can be read in digital comic form over at the iTunes app store.

“E-publishing is clearly becoming an important part of the comics world, and IDW is leading the way,” said company CEO Ted Adams in a prepared statement. “With these new apps, people who have never even been to a comic book store can now begin enjoying this great medium in a whole new way.”

The twelve new movie-related digital comics are a must-read for all TRANSFORMERS fan, setting the stage for TRANSFORMERS: REVENGE OF THE FALLEN, this summer’s next blockbuster film. In Alliance, readers journey across the globe as humans and AUTOBOTS join forces to defend Earth against the DECEPTICON threat. The very origins of CYBERTRON are revealed in Defiance, fully preparing fans for TRANSFORMERS: REVENGE OF THE FALLEN, which picks up directly where the prequel comics leave off.

I like that companies like IDW, Red 5, and Archie Comics are going for a digital distribution through Apple’s iTunes store, I just wish the screen for reading these comics were a bit bigger.
