Wednesday, April 2nd, 2008--by Stephen Schleicher

Diamond Select Toys has announced the next wave of Marvel Minimates will feature characters from Marvel’s Civil War.

Civil War Captain America – Sporting a battle-damaged look, Steve Rogers returns (briefly) for this Minimate version of Captain America complete with removable mask, gloves and even a shackle accessory to recreate his shocking assassination.

Civil War Iron Man – The first Iron Man Minimate to feature his upgraded Extremis armor, this version also includes additional body parts and armor to create your own “un-armored” Tony Stark!

Civil War Spider-Man – While it may not have lasted for long (not counting those new-fangled Scarlet Spiders), Spider-Man’s latest look is captured in two-inch scale for the first time, along with a removable mask and alternate Peter Parker mode!

Civil War Nitro – The mutant that started it all, now you can bring home the villainous Nitro to reenact all your favorite Civil War moments. Just try to keep the explosions to a minimum, okay?

These are New York Comic Con EXCLUSIVES, so best get your tickets for the show, that runs from April 18-20 in NYC.

Iron Man Minimates Headed Your Way

Friday, March 28th, 2008--by Stephen Schleicher

irnmanminimates.jpg

If you’ve been collecting Minimates for a while, you more than likely already have an Iron Man figure or two (or three or four in my case).  Diamond Select Toys and Art Asylum are releasing a new set based on the upcoming Iron Man movie.

The core assortment of Iron Man Movie Minimates will feature all-new armor designs as well as supporting characters and villains from the big-screen blockbuster.  Mark III Iron Man & Pepper Potts, Iron Monger & Tony Stark and Mark I Iron Man & Jim Rhodes will make up this wave along with a limited Mark I Iron Man & Mark II Iron Man variant two-pack.

In addition to the regular moving parts, this collection will feature plenty of removable armor so you can recreate your favorite scene from movie - or lose amongst your ever growing collection of crap collectibles.

BSG Minimates in Stores This Week

Tuesday, March 4th, 2008--by Stephen Schleicher

002_big.jpg

Check out the collection of Battlestar Galactica Minimates that arrive in stores this week to help celebrate the 30th anniversary of the original show. Not only do you get original scary cylons, there’s also Starbuck, Apollo, Muffit, and don’t forget Daggit.

Heh…Daggit…

001_big.jpg

What’s great about this collection is you can play with it alongside your new BSG figures (Starbuck vs. Starbuck) or Marvel and DC minimates. Not that I would know anything about that… really…

The new (and final) season of Battlestar Galactica kicks off soon, and thankfully it looks like we’ll make it through the year without an updated Daggit.

Toy Fair 2008: Quarter Scale Jones Figures Coming Your Way

Sunday, February 17th, 2008--by Stephen Schleicher

dstlogo.jpg

Diamond Select Toys has announced it will offer quarter-scale figures based on the Indiana Jones characters from the various motion pictures.

The Indiana Jones Ultimate Quarter Scale line will include characters from all four feature films. Each figure will include cloth outfits and accessories as well as an authentic sound clip from the massive Indiana Jones franchise. This line of hyper-detailed and super poseable figures will begin this summer with Raiders of the Lost Ark Indiana Jones.

Additionally, DST will expand into new categories including banks based on fan-favorite characters and scenes with a variety of features. New lines of bust-style banks and unarticulated figural banks will begin in 2008, blending detailed action-packed sculpts with traditional bank designs. A companion line of feature banks will include everything from sound and voice effects to coin-activated motion features such as whip attacks and booby-traps from the iconic films!

I was never much into the larger figures, but since Raiders of the Lost Ark ranks among my most favorite movies of all time, money might just be handed over for these figures.

Toy Fair 2008: Diamond Select Toys

Saturday, February 16th, 2008--by Stephen Schleicher

It’s already been announced that Diamond Select Toys will be unveiling a new quarter-scale action figure line featuring characters from the Star Trek universe, but check out this shot from the DST booth at the American Toy Fair in New York.

borg.JPG

Launching this summer, the new Star Trek Ultimate Quarter Scale line will feature detailed cloth outfits and sculpted accessories from the rich Star Trek universe. Each figure will also include authentic voice effects from the Star Trek films and television series. Measuring over eighteen inches tall and containing twenty-one points of articulation, the Star Trek Ultimate Quarter Scale line’s hyper realistic detail and super-poseability combine to create the ultimate in Star Trek collectibles.

My guess is Borg figures are going to be featured heavily in this collection. Now if DST would only release a life size version of these, I could work on my on Star Trek experience like the one in Las Vegas.

The show kicks off tomorrow (Sunday Feb. 17).

Khaaaan!

Tuesday, February 5th, 2008--by Stephen Schleicher

khantoy.jpgDiamond Select Toys has announced the next new figure from retro-inspired Star Trek cloth figures will be Khan Noonien Singh. Unlike the Kirk, Spock, and Klingon figures that were based on molds from the original Mego line, Khan is a brand new sculpt that features the same level as detail as the rest of the line.

Genetically engineered during Earths Eugenics Wars centuries earlier, Khan attempted to gain the crews trust and take over the Enterprise for his own purposes. Barely stopped by Captain James T. Kirk, Khan was exiled to the distant Ceti Alpha V and forgotten. Refusing to abandon his quest for vengeance, Khan would later return and again almost destroy the Enterprise this time claiming Spock as a casualty.

Khan is a limited edition figure that will only be found at Hastings and Planet X stores around the country.

Freakiest Minimates to date

Friday, January 11th, 2008--by Stephen Schleicher

silenceofthelambs.jpgI can understand fans wanting to pick up Star Trek, Lord of the Rings, DC and Marvel figures, but really, who would have guessed there would be enough people interested in Silence of the Lambs for Diamond Select Toys to launch a line of toys based on the movie?

All four Minimates feature all-new Art Asylum sculpts and accessories, including Hannibal’s removable straight jacket, Buffalo Bill’s signature Death’s Head Moth and Hannibal the Cannibal’s trademark mask and gurney!

Fortunately there is no Buffalo Bill hiding his package figure! If these are the same size as my DC Minimates, I look forward to pitting Batman against Hannibal and Booster Gold against Clarice…

The Silence of the Lambs Minimates will hit stores this year.

Tuesday, September 18th, 2007--by Stephen Schleicher

dst_thor01.jpgdst_thor.jpg

Diamond Select Toys has announced the latest incarnation of Thor will make it into the Marvel Select line in March.

The Mighty Thor sports the new chain-mail costume designed for his latest ongoing series, which chronicles the iconic heros struggles to rebuild Asgard on Earth - eight feet above Oklahoma! With over 14 points of articulation and a deluxe Asgard base, not even Loki himself can stop this legendary god as he battles a new era of enemies and deals with the fallout of Civil War, World War Hulk and more!

The figure is sculpted by Gentle Giant, based on the art stylings of J. Michael Straczynski.

Get Your Hands Off Me You Filthy Ape!

Tuesday, September 11th, 2007--by Stephen Schleicher

cornileus.jpg

I was drifting through my local pop culture store the other day, when I happend across the Kirk and Klingon figures from Diamond Select Toys. You know, the ones that are made from the original Mego molds from the 1970s?

The company is at it again with their latest 8-inch figures - Mego’s Planet of the Apes. Looks like they’ll be using the same molds (no pictures from the company at this time), and will roll out the Cornelius and Ursus figures first. Later, the line will feature Dr. Zaius and Dr. Zira figures. What? No Charlton Heston with “Finally, you really did it! YOU MANIACS! YOU BLEW IT UP! DAMN YOU! GOD DAMN YOU ALL TO HELL!” action?

So what kind of fun can you expect from these toys? Take a gander at the original commercial from 1974!

The figures will be available in 2008.

Season One Riker Figure On the Way

Thursday, September 6th, 2007--by Stephen Schleicher

rikerfigure.jpg

Diamond Select Toys has announced an exclusive Season One William T. Riker action figure as part of the Star Trek: The Next Generation 25th 20th Anniversary.

Holy crap, has it been 20 years since the debut of The Next Generation? I suddenly feel really really old.

For those wanting to get their mitts on the figure head over to Suncoast and F.Y.E. Although with the recent troubles Suncoast has had, you better get there in the next 30 days before the company declares bankruptcy.
