Diamond Select Toys previewed the new Star Trek action figure line back in February, and today the company announced The Original Series Series 5 will arrive in August.  The fifth series picks up where the Art Asylum line left off and gives fans updated versions of characters based on classic Star Trek episodes.

  • Captain Kirk – Based on the illustrious Captain’s appearance in “The Enemy Within,” this alternate green and gold uniform is combined with an all-new Captain Kirk head-sculpt. Accessories will include a bottle of Saurian brandy, a favorite of “Evil Kirk.”
  • Dr. McCoy – the cantankerous Chief Medical Officer of the starship Enterprise, Dr. Leonard McCoy was seen in this short-sleeved uniform on several occasions – including the fan-favorite episode “The Tholian Web.”
  • Nurse Chapel – Portrayed by legendary STar Trek actress Majel Roddenberry, this marks the character’s action figure debut in the DST line. Nurse Christine Chapel originally joined the crew of the Enterprise to find her missing husband, however her dedication to duty and attraction to Mr. Spock helped keep her around for years.
  • Yeoman Rand – Also making her action figure debut, ambitious officer Janice Rand is included in this assortment along with her signature hairstyle. Although the sparks occasionally flew between her and Captain Kirk, their relationship remained professional and developed into a decades-long friendship.

Growing up, I had a friend who had all the original Mego Star Trek figures.  On a few occasions I would go over to his house and marvel at how lucky he was to have cool toys.  One day he showed me the bridge to the starship Enterprise that featured a cool transporter that would zap those Megos to a new land.

I’m pretty sure that friend used a magnifying glass to melt those figures…

Jump forward to present day, and Diamon Select Toys announcing a reissue of the Star Trek line based on the original Mego molds.  “All well and good,” you say, “but what about the bridge?”

DST and Art Asylum have you covered with the new bridge based on the old design, that still includes the transporter.

You’ll have to wait until 2009, and it will set you back $60.00.

I suppose if Minimate Alfred is too busy mending Batman’s wounds, and needs to whip up a specialty cake for the Dark Knight’s birthday he could get Ace of Cakes founder Chef Duff Goldman to help out…if only there were a Minimate for that…

Exclusively available through Charm City Cakes, this limited Minimate includes a wide array of cake-making accessories including two of the shop’s signature cakes, a drill-powered mixer, a chainsaw, wooden spoon, spatula, guitar and flame-thrower!  Also included is an alternate baseball cap to recreate another Duff Goldman look!

Bwa? Okay…

One of the best things about going to San Diego Comic-Con is the opportunity to get your hands on the exclusive toys and action figures, and even get them signed by creators, artists, or actors.  Diamond Select Toys (booth #2607) has passed along its list of events and exlusives going on at the show.

Sigh… I guess I’m going to have to spend some time on eBay in the weeks following the convention.

Wouldn’t it have been cooler to give away that SDCC exclusive blood splattered Cylon to those that participated?

Diamond Select Toys has announced the online retailer Big Bad Toy Store will be the exclusive distributor of the Marvel Select Red Hulk. While the sculpt is similar to the green golliath, the head change and paint job set this figure off from the rest.

Fresh from his debut in Hulk #1, this mysterious mayhem-making menace has just begun his assault on the Gamma-powered individuals of the Marvel Universe and he’s shown no signs of slowing! As with the upcoming Marvel Select Hulk figure, the Red Hulk stands approximately ten inches tall and features multiple points of articulation as well as a rubble-heavy base.

Pre-orders are being accepted now for the figure that will ship in the fall. The figure is a tad pricey at $24, but it also stands 10-inches high.

skrullpicon.jpg

Now here is a San Diego Comic Con figure exclusive I’m actually excited about. With all the hoopla surrounding the return of the Skrulls – or rather the revealing of the Skrulls that have been around for a long time – Diamond Select Toys has unveiled the Elektra Skrull action figure.

In addition to getting Matt Murdock’s girlfriend all glammed up in green paint and funky chin (sorry no Jennifer Garner likeness), the seven-inch figure will also include a variety of martial arts weapons, and interchangeable arms and legs. Best of all the figure is packed with her very own Skrull soldier – not just any Skrull soldier, but the creepy old school outfit Skrull.

The Skrull two-pack will be available at the San Diego Comic Convention for $20.

The Invaders are set to make an appearance at the San Diego Comic Con in a big way. Or rather, a small way, in the form of an exclusive set of Minimates.

Featuring the four most famous members of the all-star Invaders team, this set includes Steve Rogers as Captain America, James Buchanan Barnes as Bucky, Prince Namor as the Sub-Mariner and Jim Hammond as the original Human Torch! These legendary heroes were instrumental in the defeat of the Axis powers in WWII and will appear throughout 2008 in the aptly-titled Avengers/Invaders limited series.

I like that there are multiple costume and accessory items to configure your heroes the way you like.

Now I’m really sad I’m not going to the show this year. Oh well, there’s always eBay…
