piechart.jpgOctober was an interesting month for comics as the industry saw an increase in revenue of 9% over last year at this time.  At first it may appear to be due to larger sales, but when one examines the Top 50 books, 18 titles had a price point of $3.99, or roughly 36% of the books shipping for the month.

The least expensive book was GI JOE: A New Beginning #0, which cost $1.00.  The most expensive was Gemstone’s Uncle Scrooge #380 with the high price of $7.99.  While there are a lot of $3.99 books, $2.99 still rules the roost (barely), but I really hope the big publishers don’t look at that Gemstone book, and think it would be a good idea to raise prices that high.

piechart.jpgDiamond Comic Distributors sent Major Spoilers a rundown of the top 50 manga titles for August 2008.  Probably most interesting is finding the World of Warcraft title taking the number one spot, as I really expected a vampire, or space, or space vampire, or Naruto title to take the top spot.  Also a surprise, was to find another Blizzard Entertainment property, Starcraft, taking the number three spot on the list.

piechart.jpgDiamond Comic Distributors has sent Major Spoilers the breakdown of comic book sales for July 2008.  Marvel dominated the month taking seven of the top 10 spots on the list.  DC only had two showings with Batman #678, the Grant Morrison’s R.I.P. storyline, and Justice League of America #23, while Buffy the Vampire Slayer from Dark Horse rounded out the top ten.

For Dark Horse July was a very good month as Buffy moved up the list two spots from number 12 last month.  Both Marvel and DC came close to one another in the Dollar Share category with Marvel taking in 39.11% of the total sales, with DC snagging 30.08%.  Those numbers are quite different when it comes to unit share, with Marvel trouncing everyone else on the list with 43.55% of all comics available.  DC came in second with 32.46%.  Image Comics, IDW Publishing, and Dark Horse rounded out the top five publishers.

Title wise, Marvel snagged the top two spots with Secret Invasion #3 and Ultimate Origins #1.  Final Crisis #2 slipped a spot to the third best selling title, and with the exception of Justice League of America #22 taking the nine spot, Marvel dominated the top 10.

As reported by ICv2, overall sales for June grew 2% from the month before.  However, periodical sales are down 5% for the first half of 2008.

Not surprisingly DC’s Batman Killing Joke Special Edition Hardcover took the number one spot with its new coloring (which I like quite a bit). Manga favorite Naruto came in at the number three position, with Marvel making its first appearance at #6 with Spider-Man One More Day Premiere Hardcover. DC came out on top trade wise goes taking the number one and number two spots on the list and also garnering a third position in the top 5 with DMZ.

DarkTowerLRH03Variant.jpgMarvel’s Dark Tower: The Long Road Home #1 hit the top spot for comics shipping in March 2008.

Marvel took the month with the more titles in the Top 10 than the other companies with eight titles in the top spot. Dark Horse came in second with Buffy the Vampire Slayer #12 (in the #6 spot), while DC was only able to break the top 10 with Justice League of America #19 coming in at #7.

Marvel continued to hold the month with a market share of 38.7%, with DC coming in second with 29.98% of the market.

Take the jump for the complete rundown of the Top 300. Unfortunately, since the upgrade to WordPress 2.5, the most awesome WP-Table plug-in no longer works, which means you can sort the columns.  That’s too bad too, because I found that invaluable in getting the data up quickly and allowing people to sort via price, publisher, and title.  PLEASE FIX THIS PLUG-IN!

piechart.jpgDiamond Comic Distributors has sent Major Spoilers the market data number for the top 300 comics sold in September 2007. This month, Diamond provides the list with rankings based on the number of issues sold as well as retailer ranking. For the most part the rankings are identical, but there are a few that differ.

Taking the top spot in September is World War Hulk #4, followed closely by the Spider-Man One More Day kick-off issue in Spider-Man #544. Marvel took seven of the top ten slots, with DC taking the number three spot with Justice League of America #13, and number six with All Star Batman and Robin the Boy Wonder #7. Surprisingly (or not surprisingly really), Dark Horse made an appearance in the Top 10 with Buffy the Vampire Slayer #8.

As we look at the top 20, Marvel took 10 of those spots, with DC claiming 9, and the lone Dark Horse title rounding out the set.

Take the jump for the complete list to see where your favorites fell, and don’t forget, the Major Spoilers table is sortable, meaning you can click on link at the top of the column for different displays, which I find quite useful when seeing the offerings from one company, alphabetized listing by title, or sorting based on price.
