Diamond Comic Distributors released the full list of the top selling comics for September 2009. We’ve already broken down the market share in our last installment, and present here the raw information of the comics based on total sales for the month. It should be noted that these numbers do include issues reprinted issues. I also find it nice to see Atomic Robo on the list and hope it continues to climb the charts.
Diamond Comic Distributors released its list of the top selling comics for September 2009, and it was a very good month for DC as Blackest Night and the related tie-in issues helped the company dominate the top ten comics sold for the month.
1 BLACKEST NIGHT #3 $3.99
2 CAPTAIN AMERICA: REBORN #3 $3.99
3 BATMAN AND ROBIN #4 $2.99
4 GREEN LANTERN #46 $2.99
5 WOLVERINE: GIANT-SIZE OLD MAN LOGAN #1 $4.99
6 BLACKEST NIGHT: BATMAN #2 $2.99
7 NEW AVENGERS #57 $3.99
8 GREEN LANTERN CORPS #40 $2.99
9 DARK AVENGERS #9 $3.99
10 BLACKEST NIGHT: SUPERMAN #2 $2.99
One would think capturing six of the spots in the top ten would make DC the top publisher for the month, but as my uncle Arthur used to say, “Volume, kid. Volume. That’s how you make your money.” And that saying seems to hold true for Marvel who was able to capture 47% of the market share. DC did come in with a respectable second, taking 32% of the market, which left a mere 21% for the rest of the publishers to fight over. And the rest did make a stand, with less than a percentage separating Dark Horse and Image Comics.
It is interesting to note that in the Top Ten list, the only DC book that was more than $2.99 was Blackest Night #3, while Marvel’s showings were all $3.99 and higher. With that in mind, it is easy to see why Marvel also captured the largest percentage of the dollar share for the direct market as well. While Marvel has had the $3.99 cover price for a while, it will be interesting to see how many Marvel titles remain in the top ten in the months to come if DC keeps their regular titles below the $3.00 mark.
We’ll have a complete listing of the Top 300 Comics for September in a few days when Diamond releases the information to us.

Diamond Comic Distributors sent Major Spoilers its breakdown of comics sold for the month of August 2009. As expected Marvel took the number one spot on the Market Share list, grabbing 43.86% of the unit share, compared to DC’s 36.04%. While that may seem like a huge gab between the first and second place publishers, the Dollar Share is closer at 39.70% and 33.18%.
Of the top comics for the month, DC beat out Captain America Reborn #2, with the second issue of Blackest Night. DC continued to do well for the month, with Batman and Robin #3, in the third spot, Green Lantern #45 at number four. Still, Marvel did make a good showing capturing spots 2, and the 5-9 spots on the list. The comics industry is made up of more than the big two, and for a change, Archie Comics debuted at #35 with the proposal issue of Archie #600.

Diamond Comic Distributors sent Major Spoilers the breakdown of comics sold during April 2009. Not surprisingly, Marvel Comics took the largest portion of the market share for the month, selling 40% of the all issues sold. DC Comics did better than last month by capturing 28% of the quantity share. From there, the scraps were picked up by rest with Dark Horse and IDW Publishing battling it out for the number three spot.
[table "0" not found /]While the chart may not look good for DC, they can take comfort in the realization that the Neil Gaiman Detective Comics issue, and Flash Rebirth #1 took the top two spots for the month. That wasn’t the only win for DC, as the company featured five titles in the Top Ten Comics sold. The rest were claimed by Marvel, which means no third party publisher cracked the coveted spots. In fact, the first non DC/Marvel title to appear on the list is IDW’s Angel #20, which placed #81 Dark Horse’s Buffy the Vampire Slayer, which came in at #22, missing the Top 20 for the first time in a long time.

Diamond Comic Distributors has sent Major Spoilers the breakdown of the top 300 comics for the month ending March 2009. DC’s Batman: Battle for the Cowl #1 sold well, but not enough to beat Dark Avengers #3 and New Avengers #51 (both Dark Reign tie-ins). It, Justice League of America #31, and Dark Horse’s Buffy the Vampire Slayer #23 were the only non-Marvel titles in the Top Ten for the month, which means, once again, Marvel took the month with a 47% hold on the direct market.
As reported a few days ago, IDW Publishing had a nice run for the month coming in third for March 2009, beating Dark Horse Comics by a mere .3% in the unit share column.

Diamond Comic Distributors sent the breakdown of the top comics sold during February 2009. Not surprising, Marvel’s Amazing Spider-Man #583 ruled the top spot with the fifth printing of the Obama cover. This lead to Marvel taking the number one position for publishers during the month, grabbing nearly 45% of the dollar share for the month.
[table "0" not found /]Batman #686 came in second place with only Justice League of America #30 joining the title in the Top 10 list. Buffy once again served Dark Horse Comics well, placing 12th once again. Of the series that were canceled by DC in February, Blue Beetle #36 finished in the top half of the list (barely), Birds of Prey #127 finished 90th, Robin #183 at 56th, and Nightwing #153 in 36th place.

Diamond Comic Distributors has released its breakdown of comics sold in December 2008. As the year ended, Marvel once again rode the gravy train to success capturing almost 50% of the unit share, while DC limped in with a 31% showing.
With the low showing from the other publishers, it is a wonder they’ll survive with Diamonds new minimum order declaration.
The top seller of the month was the closing chapter of the Secret invasion, while the opening chapter to Dark Reign took third place. DC wedged between the two with Final Crisis #5, and had a pretty decent showing in the number 6 and spots with its Batman titles.
December saw the release of Dark Horse Comics Buffy the Vampire Slayer #20, which made it into the top 20, but the rest of the top 20 list is dominated by the big two. The next best seller on the list that is not DC or Marvel came from IDW with its Angel: After the Fall series, which placed 64th, with an estimated 37,000 copies sold.
The complete listing can be found after the jump.

It’s still January, so why not try and cram in as many Top 10 lists as we can? The latest comes from Diamond Comic Distributors who sent us the top selling comics and graphic novels list for 2008. Can’t say I’m surprised by the results, as anyone who follows the Top 300 list each month can see those trending titles.
Diamond Comic Distributors has sent Major Spoilers the breakdown of the top 300 comics sold during November 2008. Marvel once again leads all publishers by hanging on to 42.9% of the market. DC takes the next largest slice of the pie with 34.52%, while Dark Horse and the rest of the publishers fight over the .36 – 4.84% of the remainder.

October was an interesting month for comics as the industry saw an increase in revenue of 9% over last year at this time. At first it may appear to be due to larger sales, but when one examines the Top 50 books, 18 titles had a price point of $3.99, or roughly 36% of the books shipping for the month.
The least expensive book was GI JOE: A New Beginning #0, which cost $1.00. The most expensive was Gemstone’s Uncle Scrooge #380 with the high price of $7.99. While there are a lot of $3.99 books, $2.99 still rules the roost (barely), but I really hope the big publishers don’t look at that Gemstone book, and think it would be a good idea to raise prices that high.

Today, Major Spoilers brings you the Top 25 Toys sold through Diamond Comic Distributors in the month of August 2008. With The Dark Knight being huge hit in the theaters, it’s no surprise to find DC dominating the top half of the chart with Batman merch.
Take the jump to see what toy was number one, and if your favorite toy of the month made the list.
Diamond Comic Distributors sent Major Spoilers a rundown of the top 50 manga titles for August 2008. Probably most interesting is finding the World of Warcraft title taking the number one spot, as I really expected a vampire, or space, or space vampire, or Naruto title to take the top spot. Also a surprise, was to find another Blizzard Entertainment property, Starcraft, taking the number three spot on the list.
August marks the first full month charting the Watchmen Trailer Effect, as the Alan Moore, Dave Gibbons trade hit number one in the Top 100 Trade Paperbacks and Graphic Novels as reported by Diamond Comic Distributors.
Debuting at the number six position was DC’s first volume of All-Star Superman, which seemed to be a trend for the company, bringing in six of the top 10 trades for the month. Marvel only had three titles appearing in the Top 10, with Dark Horse taking the number 2 spot this month with Star Wars Force Unleashed.
