Press Release

Diamond Comic Distributors and IDW Publishing announced today that IDW has become the first publisher to advance to “premier” status since the classification was implemented in 1996. Diamond and IDW have signed a new, multi-year agreement that features a number of fresh initiatives, including premier status, in recognition of IDW’s success as a top tier comic book and graphic novel publisher. Under the agreement, Diamond will continue to be the exclusive distributor of IDW comic books and graphic novels to the comic book specialty market, and to the bookstore market through its Diamond Book Distributors division.

“This change recognizes the growth and importance of IDW Publishing,” said Diamond President and CEO, Steve Geppi, “and we look forward to working with them for many years to come.”

I’ve heard horror stories from parents who have taken their young children into comic shops that are less than kid friendly, and I’ve been in a shop or two that I wouldn’t want my son to even look at in passing.  Fortunately, Diamond Comic Distributors is launching a new website and shop locator for those looking for kid-friendly shops in the United States and Canada.

“The long-term success of the comic book industry lies with getting kids excited about the medium of comics and making it a contemporary choice alongside video games, online activities, movies, and books, said Dan Manser, Diamond’s Director of Marketing. “Our hope is that kidscomics.com can help promote the comics medium to kids and help them and their parents find a comic shop that caters to their needs.”

Diamond also announced DC Entertainment has signed on to support the kidscomics.com system through DCbeyond.com and the KidsWB.com sites.

Kidscomics.com will launch with 800 qualified shops.

As we continue to move through the month of March, let’s take a moment and look back at the month at was February 2010.  Once again, Marvel Comics took the top spot by claiming 45.42% of the Unit Share of comics released in the direct market, with DC placing second with 34.37%.  As I’ve mentioned before, Marvel has almost twice the number of books released per month than its closest competition, so it is interesting to note that DC had six titles in the top ten, compared to Marvel’s four, with Blackest Night #7 taking the number one spot.

Playmates Toys announced it has selected Diamond Comic Distributors as the company that will distribute its products to the specialty market.

“With powerful entertainment brands iCarly and Shrek, “gotta have” pop icon Michael Jackson, the irresistible Rainbow Brite and urban vinyl-influenced gaming media brand Hero:108, we think the Diamond alliance is a perfect match to achieve our objective of strong placement at influential trend and entertainment venues,” said Lou Novak, President Playmates Toys.

When you go into your local comic shop, will you snag that Rainbow Brite off the shelf, or let it sit?  On the other hand, Playmates does distribute Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Star Trek, and Terminator Salvation products, so expect a higher ratio of those toys on the shelf compared to iCarly.

Norman Osborn’s crazy antics propelled Marvel to the top of the charts, as Siege #1 took the top spot for the month of January. Still, DC did make a good showing, with Green Lantern #50’s Blackest Night tie-in, and Grant Morrison’s Batman and Robin #7 placing second and third.  DC only had two other titles showing up in the Top Ten for the month, with Marvel claiming 60% of the Top Ten titles.

Marvel also took the top publisher spot in January in both the Direct Market Unit and Dollar Shares, by snatching 42.56% of the Unit and 38.77% of the Dollar Share.

As far as other publishers go, Dark Horse’s Buffy the Vampire Slayer continues to slip down the charts placing 25th, while Image made its first showing at the number 75 spot with Haunt #4, and Archie #605 hitting number 80.  Dynamite Entertainment’s The Boys #38, slid into the 89th slot, and IDW Publishing making it into the Top 100 with Angel #29.

Diamond Comic Distributors has announced that this year’s Free Comic Book Day will get its first ever commemorative t-shirt coming directly from Sergio Aragones.

“We wanted to create a unique annual event T-shirt and who better to start with than Sergio?” commented FCBD spokesperson Elissa Lynch. “We think he’s done a beautiful job of capturing the excitement and personalities found in comic shops and on Free Comic Book Day.”

“I’m very proud, of course,” said Sergio about being the first FCBD artist. “The art is not based on any one comic book shop, it is my imagination—it is how I think shops look like, full of young readers, moms, super heroes reading and buying comics.”

Expect the T-Shirt to be available in April 2010.
