Apparently Batman is dead, but you’d never know it if you’ve been reading Detective Comics for the last year or so. The plausible exit created by Paul Dini at the end of last issue, leads naturally to the events Denny O’Neil uses in Detective Comics #851. Batman dead? Unlikely, so why mourn the loss here? Instead, O’Neil uses the time to tell a good Detective story.

How awesome is Dustin Nguyen? Do you really need yet another example?
Okay, since you asked, take the jump for the pencils from Detective Comics #850 featuring Hush’s discovery of the Batcave.
Awesomeness Ahead!

It’s too bad DC didn’t take a long hard look at what Paul Dini was doing in the pages of Detective Comics and make the executive decision to turn his Heart of Hush story into the final Batman story. Instead of a whacked out tale, Dini takes the legend of Batman and brings it back to the one thing that can save any hero, heal any wound, and thwart the worst of people – love.

As odd as the ending was to the last Detective Comics, things get more intense in issue #849, arriving in stores next week. Once again the brilliant art by Dustin Nguyen brings the story to life, and really, who doesn’t like to see Batman breaking in to Arkham and getting medieval on the inmates. Oh, did I say too much? Check out the sneak peek, after the jump.

I really get the distinct impression that Paul Dini has a collection of favorite Batman characters; Zatanna, Batman, and the Riddler, as this issue features another appearance by the criminal turned good guy trying to out smart one of the most brilliant minds in the DCU.
The first installment of Batman R.I.P. hit stores last week and promptly sold out at the distributor level, prompting DC to go back to press for a second printing that includes a variant cover.
Batman #676 (second printing) is scheduled to be in stores on June 11, with the cover you see below.
And because we know you will want to collect every issue in the series, Major Spoilers has provided you with a handy checklist with release date.

A Countdown tie-in? Really?

Paul Dini is an incredibly busy guy. He’s got his Madame Mirage stuff over at Top Cow, Detective Comics, and that Countdown thing you might have heard about. Countdown seems to a preoccupation with Mr. Dini; he’s even gone so far as cram as many Bat-characters into the title as he can. So why not take an entire issue of Detective Comics and make it a tie-in issue? Sounds like a great idea, but is it? Is it really?

While you are waiting for the new episode of Heroes to begin (or if you are waiting for it to appear on the bittorrent’s tomorrow, check out this interesting article that takes a look at how the Batman Logo evolved over time.
Thank Jim for the tip!

Word out of Chicago is artist Dustin Nguyen will make a return to the Batman universe taking on the art duties for Detective Comics. This is not the first time Nguyen has drawn Batman, he is currently doing work on Superman/Batman, and this fall, you’ll see his Batman work in DC’s Halloween Special, in a story written by Paul Dini that features – surprise – Zatanna.
Dustin Nguyen joins Paul Dini’s Detective Comics in early 2008.

As mentioned in the last Wizard World Chicago summary, Ra’s al Ghul will be returning to the DC Universe. Yet another one of those incidents where a character that was killed in 2004 makes his return.
But unlike Jason Todd, Donna Troy, and the rest of the lot, Ra’s actually has a practical method of resurrecting each time he dies – the Lazuras Pit. After Death and the Maidens, it looked like he wouldn’t be returning at all. So what’s the dealio?

DC Comics has sent Major Spoilers a sneak peek at a couple titles arriving in stores this week. This week Detective #829 (not written by Dini) finds a trapped Bruce Wayne unable to done his costume, instead relying on Robin to save everyone in Wayne Tower.
This week also features the second installment of Shazam! The Monster Society of Evil. I’m already in love with the retelling of this tale, and can’t wait to devour the story and art in this Jeff Smith title. Read the rest of this entry »
While I have no problem writing Best Of and Top Ten lists, this is my first year coming up with a Best Of list for comics, and it has been a real challenge. First there is the whole “thousands of titles out there” deal, then there is the fact that these kinds of lists are a touchy subject to write. What may be on my Best Of list, is on the @$$ List for someone else. Regardless, it’s time to look back over the year and see what was tops when it came to comics.

Paul Dini Truly Missed
Dr. Phosphorus is back! I never knew he left. Once presumed dead, it is up to the Batman to track the fiery doctor. This issue also finds Paul Dini taking a break, while Royal McGraw steps up in an attempt to fill some big shoes. Does the shoe fit?
It’s no secret I’ve been a Dini fan-boy since he first burst on the scene, and I’ve been babbling like a giddy schoolgirl over his work in Detective Comics. The plant world is no longer Poison Ivy’s ally, and it is up to Batman to protect her. Is Dini able to pull off a hat trick in Detective Comics #823?
