Or – “Come To The Dark Side…  They Have Cookies!”

DC1.jpg

During the events of ‘52,’ the Religion of Crime was fixated on “the twice-named daughter of Kane,” and spent a great deal of time trying to skewer Batwoman in accordance with the prophecy.  They failed in stabbing her to death, but didn’t disappear, resurfacing with a new leader, a crazy white-skinned woman known as Alice.  During their intial encounter, Batwoman was stunned to have Alice refer to “our father,” before swan-diving into the freezing polluted waters of Gotham Bay.  Is Alice a loon, or is she genuine?  And does this have anything to do with the mysterious and traumatic incident from Batwoman’s childhood?

Or – “I Am DE BATWOMAAAAN!”

There’s a new head of the super-creepy Religion of Crime, and she’s as dangerous as she is eccentric and beautiful.  Batwoman has been rushing to stop Gotham’s latest freakshow from taking over the town, but when Alice kidnapped Batwoman’s father last issue, it was clear that things were about to get personal…  But how did she find out Kate Kane’s identity?

It’s pretty obvious that we are big fans of Dustin Nguyen’s artwork, and we’ve even featured his Lil’Batman sketches on the site before.  DC Entertainment must also like the look as as they are allowing Dustin and writer Derek Fridolfs team for a two two-page shorts spotlighting Lil’Gotham in the Detective Comics and Batman Annuals.

Or – “Most People Don’t Know That His Full Name Is Manuel Labór.”

So, I have completed my daily labors, overseeing the dozen fellers and gals what make up the current workgroup to call themselves Team RamRod (”See, you’re Arkot Ramathorn…  Ram.  And I’m Rodney Farva…  Rod.  Team RamRod!”) and I am preparing to have some spaghetti and hang out with friends, but first I wanted to catch up with some of the many titles that I’ve neglected over the busy last days of August…

DC Comics was honored by the Guinness World Records this past weekend, when it was pointed out that Detective Comics is the longest-running comic book periodical in the United States.  Paul Levitz, DC Comics President and Publisher, accepted the award.

And if you think that is cool news, Doctor Who was also honored as the most successful sci-fi series.

Longevity was another factor, since “Doctor Who” also holds the Guinness record for longest-running sci-fi TV series. A controversy broke out over that record in 2006, and “Stargate SG-1″ later received the record for longest-running consecutive sci-fi series after completing a 10-year run.

We don’t usually get/see announcements about DC titles selling out, but when The Source announced Detective Comics #854 sold out and is going back to press, the first thought was that this is a really great thing.  The Greg Rucka and J.H. Williams III series scored quite high in our review, and is something that should be in your hands.

Today is American Independence Day, commonly referred to as July 4th, as it takes place on the 4th of July, hence the name, and that’s why the song is called Alice’s Restaurant…  To all the faithful Spoilerites of the United States, Happy 4th of July.  For those of you who are from elsewhere, sorry about all the hegemony and stuff.  Either way, it’s time for another bout of our Rapid Fire Reviews, bite-sized chunks of comics that I either couldn’t write three paragraphs about, or ran out of time to cover.  Give us your tired, your poorly drawn, your huddled masses of comics, yearning to be bagged in mylar…

Woe is the comic fan who bemoans the loss of Paul Dini in Detective Comics and refuses to jump on a book featuring a strong female lead, for that comic book reader is going to miss out on one heck of an issue.

Well, that’s one way to do a reboot

It’s been such a long time since part one of Neil Gaiman’s “Whatever Happened to the Caped Crusader?” issue, that I thought I had either missed the concluding chapter, or the release was being held off so readers could get into the full swing of “Battle for the Cowl”.  Detective Comics #853 arrived today, and the wait was worth it as the issue didn’t disappoint.

The Talented Mr. Elliot

detective852picon.jpg

We are now well within the time period between when Batman disappeared, and the time when he will rise once again to strike fear in the hearts of the wicked and the vile.  Who will fill those shoes is yet to be revealed, yet until the dawn of the Big Cowling as it will be called (I got nothin’), DC still has comics to sell.  The last time we saw Paul Dini writing Batman, he was wrapping up his Heart of Hush story line.  The ending saw Thomas Elliot penniless, and wander the streets of Gotham.  How’s he going to rise and become a major player once again?  Detective Comics #852 reveals the first part of his plan.

Or – “Wasn’t There Another Reviewer At Major Spoilers?  Some Old Dude?”

xmas.jpg

It’s a little known fact that the month of December contains space-time anomalies that keep you from ever completing anything on time.  Add to that a new paradigm at my office, wherein my team load has doubled and my patience halved, a tendency to want to spend time with my friends around the holidays, a scanner that works about half the time and my recent birthday, and I admit it…  I may have been neglecting my reviews.  Still, t’is nobler in the mind to beg forgiveness than it is to ask permission, so I’m back with a new batch of things you may have already read, but forgot to ask for my opinion on the first time.
