In 1964, Stan Lee and Bill Everett unleashed one of Marvel’s longest running titles on the comic reading public, The Daredevil! A young boy blinded by a terrible accident but compensated by gaining extraordinary abilities, he has been in continuous publication since his first issue in 1964. Last month he celebrated his 500th issue, and this week we look at issue 501 and a new creative team.

This week it was announced that both Ghost Rider and Daredevil would be headed back to the silver screen for sequels to their original features, which many considered a pox on humanity.  There are some very good reasons to do a sequel, and while you may not go and see the followup flicks, we want to know which of the two is going to be the least horrible.

CHOOSE!

Which sequel do you want to see over the other?

Here’s some gravy to go along with the heaping helping of Ghost Rider 2 news we presented earlier – Marvel is developing a new Daredevil movie.  Fortunately, instead of a sequel, this will be a reboot.  Empire Online has no other information other than the fact that Ben Affleck won’t be involved in the project.

It’s odd that Marvel is going for a reboot of the Daredevil film when the director’s cut of the film was much better than the theatrical release.  It’s certainly much better than the Ghost Rider film which Columbia seems to want to force down viewer’s throats.  On the other hand, with Marvel trying to bring all its properties back in-house, rebooting the film (ala The Hulk) could do wonders for the crimson crime fighter.

Meet the new boss, same as the old boss

daredevilnoir1picon.jpg

Here’s the biggest problem I have with any series (DC, Marvel, Dark Horse, whoever) that attempts to retell an origin story set during a different time period; it’s the same origin story set during a different time period.  It doesn’t matter if it is Red Son, Gotham by Gaslight, or Daredevil Noir, they all follow the same plot points, but just adds that What If? twist to try and hook the reader.  Sometimes it works, other times it doesn’t.

During his weekly, MyCup o’ Joe!, Marvel EIC Joe Quesada confirmed that Andy Diggle will indeed take over the writing duties of Daredevil beginning with issue #501, which is expected to be released late summer/early fall.

I think Andy really showed us something when he took over Thunderbolts.
He has a certain feel, a certain “bite” to his stories, and he just writes tremendous, tremendous villains.
He writes mean characters! [laughs] And there’s something there that resonated with all of us in editorial, where we just thought he could write the piss out of Daredevil.

Check out more of Joe’s comments about Diggle, and the history of Daredevil (and more), at the MySpace Comic Books page.

The polystone statues from Sideshow Collectibles have been really great these last couple of years.  I’ve picked up a few by Adam Hughes, and have been extremely pleased with the size, price, and details.  The latest polystone diorama features The Punisher and Daredevil going at it.

The latest addition to Sideshow’s line of Marvel collectibles is the Punisher VS Daredevil Diorama. This outstanding diorama is cast in heavy-weight, high-quality polystone, then hand-finished and hand-painted to exacting standards. Each piece is individually hand-numbered, then packaged in a durable foam shipping interior and beautiful full color box. The Punisher VS Daredevil Diorama is the perfect addition to any collector’s display.

The diorama should ship in the second quarter of 2009.

More photos after the jump.

Or, “Hell’s Kitchen has more than one cook…”

DDBLOODpicon.png

Okay, so I admit that even though the street-level vigilante/hero is just about my favorite genre (right after patriotic based heroes); it has been years since I read Daredevil. Matter of fact, the last time I picked the book up regularly was the days of the “Fall from Grace” back in 1994. As a matter of fact, my reading of Daredevil has always been sort of like an awkward date. You really enjoy the time you spent on the date, but there are other things going on and you get distracted. Then you realize how long it has been, and like a guy who forgot to make his post-date phone call, you feel odd about stepping back into that place. That was kind of how I felt when I picked DAREDEVIL: BLOOD OF THE TARANTULA up to review.
