The Dresden Files Get Dabel Brothers Treatment

Wednesday, October 3rd, 2007--by Stephen Schleicher

full_dresden_files_4.jpgOver at his blog site, Jim Butcher has announced his novels the Dresden Files are going to be translated into comic book form, by none other than Dabel Brothers Productions.

The current plan is to lay out the Dresden Files storyline at the rate of one of the novels every twelve to sixteen monthly issues, with occasional side-trips and independent stories thrown in. (Ever wonder what happened in Branson the month before Storm Front? How about what somebody saw in the lake in Minnesota between Storm Front and Fool Moon? Maybe I’ll get to tell those stories now! How cool is that?)

I will be assisting with the writing of the comics, and am also involved in the design and approval of the characters, art, tone, and so on. This is an actual hand-in-hand project in which I have full creative input and influence, and I’m friggin’ giddy about it. I mean, come on! Comic books!

After their split with Marvel, Dabel Brothers have picked up Dean Koontz Frankenstein and now Dresden.

It didn’t take Dabel Brothers Productions to quickly move on to its next project following the split with Marvel. The company announced it will be producing the graphic adaptation of Dean Koontz’s Frankenstein trilogy.

“We love surprises,” laughed Ernst Dabel, President of Dabel Brothers Productions in a prepared statement, “and we’re certain that many people will be absolutely stunned to hear that we’re working with such a well-known author as Dean Koontz. And we’re excited! Mr. Koontz is an amazing writer with some incredible ideas, and we’re thrilled to have a chance to bring his Frankenstein story into the comic book medium.” (more…)

Dabel Brothers and Marvel Part Ways

Tuesday, August 14th, 2007--by Stephen Schleicher

anitablakepicon.jpg

Here is something that comes as a complete surprise. Marvel sent out a press release this morning announcing it has “concluded its relationship” with Dabel Brothers Productions.

Fans of Anita Blake Vampire Hunter know the Dabel Brothers brought the high selling title to Marvel back in 2006, and it has been a hit, getting new readers into stores. Instead of Dabel Brothers Productions keeping its many titles including Hedge Knight, Tales of Alvin Maker, and Wryms, Marvel will continue to produce these titles.  There was never any official word on the exact nature of the Dabel/Marvel deal, so who knows why Dabel Brothers would turn the rights to these properties over to Marvel outright.

The press release is really vague about the specifics, but due to the nature of the announcement something is up.

Dabel Brothers Productions is currently working on its next series of books that is slated for release in 2008.

What are your thoughts on this announcement? I know some of you absolutely hate Anita Blake, while an equal number love the series.

You can read the entire press release after the jump.
