Thanks to the big three day weekend last week, my weekly shipment of comics ended up getting delayed a day. I should have received my big box of comics on Saturday, which would have given me plenty of time to get today’s Countdown for you. For whatever reason, the mail person dropped off one box of posters, but failed to deliver the good stuff. So hopefully the “shipment” will find its way to my house on Monday, so look for the belated Countdown review mid-week.
Sigh… it sucks to live in the middle of no where.
Do they? Do they really?

Last issue was all about cliffhangers, so one would expect a lot of resolution this week with a fair smattering of fisticuffs and humor thrown in to boot. Countdown continues to chug along, but is it just spinning its wheels, or is it the little engine that can make it over the mountain?
Yeah, you can tell I’m behind. Here’s your panel of the (last) week.

The Last Supper of the JLA. As one commenter pointed out, the almighty Batman has a dickness level of around 7. Go ahead and play the game and see who is the betrayer, who is the disbeliever, and who isn’t pictured.

Each week I tell myself I’m going to contribute more reviews in addition to all the news content I deliver, but each week something comes up. This week was the double whammy of a new football season that requires I produce/direct the game for our local television station (and streaming on the Internet worldwide), and my parents paying us a visit to see their grandson. On top of that, I woke up Sunday morning with a severe allergic reaction to something I encountered over the weekend. Yeah… no fun all around. So why don’t we skip the chit-chat and get to the Major Spoilers Late Edition Review of Countdown #36.
Beware the Great Disaster!

Here we go, a week full of revelations and answers to all your questions! Wait…what? This is only week 37? Damn. That means it’s another issue full of twists and turns, as our group of heroes trip through the DC Universe on the way to The End. This week a couple of stories get a much needed kick in the pants, while others get us nowhere fast. Does that mean Countdown #37 is a bad issue? Not at all.

If you didn’t read the Major Spoilers review of Booster Gold #1, then you missed out on the next big clue for the DCU. Take the jump for the big (and I mean big) picture, then my W.A.G.s on what it could mean.
This is neither the first appearance nor a collector’s item

Only a dozen issues to go before this series gets and official name change to Countdown to Final Crisis. The good news is the stories are picking up. The bad news is the cover is nothing but a lie. The cover claims this is the first appearance of Mr. Action, even though we have seen Mr. Action in action in previous issues of Countdown, not to mention his role in Action Comics. The cover also claims this is a collector’s item… I think not…
Even with the lie that is the cover, the issue isn’t that bad. Sure there are a few stumbles, but there are more good bits than bad.

Ready for another weekly series? It may be coming according to Dan DiDio. More highlights from the DC Nation Panel after the jump.
Do not collect the secret decoder ring that explains this series

Remember a few reviews ago when I mentioned Paul Dini had it bad for anything and everything Batty? Well the love fest continues this week as more Bat-verse characters make an appearance, and we see the return of the Suicide Squad. With several tie-ins required to make sense of it all, where does that leave the reader?
Confused…duh…
It’s a wonder the series is doing as well as it is

Another issue down and the plot thicken. Even against everyone’s predictions Countdown is actually getting better as the series progresses. We’ve confirmed Countdown is leading to the next big event that is Final Crisis, and we’re seeing its cause in these pages (here and all the tie-in issues being forced down our throats).
Without further ado, let’s rundown the major highlights from Countdown #40.

At the DC Panel today, Dan DiDio announced Countdown would have an official name change to Countdown to Final Crisis starting with issue #26.

If it is happening in Countdown, it’s happening in Gotham City

I couldn’t wait to get my hands on Countdown #41 this week to see if the creative team could go two for two in giving readers a story that didn’t cause massive brain hemorrhages from confusing storylines, and more importantly didn’t suck. Unlike some bloggers, I’m here to stay on Countdown and won’t be punking out after just a couple of issues. It’s too bad there are those leaving the series in droves, because right now the series is starting to take off.
You would think a mud bath would be good for you

It was one of those weeks, where I was flooded with too many things on my plate (meetings, preparing for classes, meetings, writing for various blogs, meetings), and I didn’t even have time to sit down and read the latest issue of Countdown until Sunday evening. Mary Marvel continues to kick it in Gotham, the hunt for Ray Palmer kicks off, and what do you do when you find yourself at 30,000 feet without a parachute?
Don’t you feel like we’ve been here before?

It’s not everyday a superhero dies – it’s more of an every other month thing. But one thing is for certain, in the DC Universe, if there is a major crisis looming, it’s a sure bet a Flash is going to die. In the wake of Infinite Crisis, and the repercussions of One Year Later, Bart Allen (aka Impulse, aka Kid Flash II, aka The Flash: The Fastest Man Alive) had a very rough time trying to fill the very big shoes of his grandpa Barry and Uncle Wally – fans didn’t like the disappearance of Wally, and they also didn’t like to see Bart emerge from the speed force fully grown. In the end it was decided – or planned from the beginning if you believe the hype – to kill the latest run and reestablish Wally as the Scarlet Speedster.
Now we’re cooking

I can’t believe Countdown has been such a slow burn in getting to the action, but finally, finally, Countdown 44 begins to deliver on the goods that make a great story. As hard as I have been on the series to date, I think everyone – writers, editors, artists, and most importantly the readers are finally starting to settle down and get comfortable with the series. Issue #45 received four stars, how will issue #44 fare?
