Millennium Films has acquired the rights to Robert E. Howard’s Conan the Barbarian series.
[Paradox Entertainment prexy-CEO Fredrik] Malmberg declined to renew another option with Warners when the rights lapsed in spring. He was frustrated that seven years’ worth of development at WB had not yielded a production start on the franchise that launched the film career of Arnold Schwarzenegger in its first bigscreen go-round.
The company will either fully produce the flik or partner with its distributor.
Millennium is ditching everything previously worked on by Warner Bros., including the Robert Rodriquez stuff, and start from scratch hoping to make the next Conan film closer to the original creation.

Fear not Cimmerian fans, even though the current Dark Horse Conan series is ending with issue #50, the company will be brining the warrior back when it relaunches as Conan the Cimmerian in May 2008.
Conan #50 will be a double-sized issue that ends the three issue tale chronicling the end of Conan’s time as a theif adapted from The Hand of Nergal by Robert E. Howard.
So, what can you expect from the new series?

Long before Conan, Robert E. Howard created Kull of Atlantis (or Kull the Conqueror take your pick). The character wasn’t as well known, so when the Kull tale By This Axe I Rule was rejected by Weird Tales magazine, Howard reworked the character into the super famous Arnold Schwarzennegar Conan. Now Clayburn Moore has created a new statue based on Howard’s Kull of Atlantis.
In an unprecedented deal for a licensed character sculpt, Clayburn Moore was given full creative freedom to design the look of the piece himself by Paradox Entertainment/Conan Properties, owners of the copyrights to Howard’s characters. As a general rule, licensors place strict demands on character merchandise, requiring that licensees adhere to specific imagery or to a specific artist’s rendition of the character. But confidence in Moore’s ability to do justice to Howard’s vision resulted in the unusual arrangement.
The Kull of Atlantis statue will be available for pre-order on July 25, with the expected release date of January 2008. Kull will sell for $249.
More Kull pics after the jump.

When Warner Bros. dropped the ball and lost the rights to the Conan film franchise, New Line stepped up to score the rights to Robert E. Howard’s creation.
After posting a bid of mid-six against seven figures for an 18-month option with one extension, the studio entered into negotiations after CAA staged an auction for rights holder Paradox Entertainment. The property drew the interest of several studios and monied producers including Hollywood Gang’s Gianni Nunnari and Millennium Films.
Warner had been developing the movie for some time with everyone from the Wachowski’s to Robert Rodriquez making the adaptation.
Even though there have been at least three Conan films produced (Conan, Conan the Destroyer, and Red Sonja) none have come close to the spirit of the original Howard novels. Warner was working on this when its option deadline expired.
