SDCC’08: Cooke on Parker

Thursday, July 24th, 2008--by Stephen Schleicher

idwparker.jpgFor those of you who have been pining away for news on Darwyn Cooke’s next project, your wait is over.  IDW Publishing announced last night that Cooke is creating four original graphic novels based on the Richard Stark “Parker” crime fiction series of books.

Originally published in the 1960s, Stark’s novels featuring the Parker character - The Hunter, The Outfit, the Mourner and The Man with the Getaway Face - are tough and tautly composed.  The Parker character is known as one of the most fascinating and compelling criminals in crime fiction. Lee Marvin played Parker in John Boorman’s film Point Blank.

“Working with Darwyn has been one of the highlights of my editing career; our sensibilities mesh on a lot of levels. It’s a true pleasure and privilege to be associated with him on this project,” said Scott Dunbier, IDW Publishing’s Special Projects Editor in a prepared release to the media.

You’ll have to wait until next year (probaby summer) before you’ll see the first installment from Cooke and IDW.  If you are at the San Diego Comic Con, stop by the IDW booth (#2207 and #1705) and pick up one of three limited edition Darwyn Cooke illustration cards.  These are limited to 500 each, so I’m betting they will be gone by end of day today.

SDCC’08: Boom! Announces Disney/Pixar Line

Wednesday, July 23rd, 2008--by Stephen Schleicher

Pixar_SD08_EXCL_COVER_sm.jpgBoom! Studios has just announced a new partnership with Disney/Pixar to produce a series of comics based on some favorite Pixar titles and characters.

Toy Story, Finding Nemo and Wall*E are all on the list, but probably the most exciting is the announcement that Mark Waid will be writing The Incredibles title for the company that will feature cover art by Darwyn Cooke.

“Today, American comic books are aimed primarily at an older readership. Comics produced for an upcoming generation of readers are scarce - and BOOM! Studios aims to do something about that,” said Waid.  “There will be comics for kids again!”

Those of you attending the San Diego Comic Con can stop by Boom! Studios’ booth (#2543) and pick up a preview book for the new titles for a mere $5.00.

“It’s nothing short of an honor to work with Disney Publishing Worldwide and Pixar for this project,” said BOOM! Studios co-founder Ross Richie.  “We found kindred spirits in the creative counterparts we have at both companies, and have just really had a fantastic time finding the right writer and artist combinations to do the source material justice.  I think young and old alike are going to love these books!”

SDCC’08: Marvel Announces Fashion Show

Monday, July 21st, 2008--by Stephen Schleicher

SDCC_FashionShow.jpg

While Masquerade is the costume event for the fans, Marvel is teaming up with Disguise to put on a fashion show at the Marvel booth.  Instead of models wearing traditional costumes, the ladies will be walking down the catwalk in a different interpretation of the favorites.

Disguise has tossed this old and unflattering cartoonish concept and instead made fashionable, wearable and fun costumes that not only fit great but look fabulous.  These costumes are inspired by some of the hottest and most iconic heroes to grace the pages of Marvel, and this will be your first chance to see them live as they make their Comic-Con debut!

The fashion show will be held at the Marvel booth (#2429) on Friday from 2:00 until 3:00, with a photo-op with the models immediately after.
