Alex Ross is coming back to Marvel, and guess what project he is working on?

According to Ross, this project has been in the works for two years.
In an interview with Newsarama, Alex said he would be the designer, cover artist, and co-storyteller with Jim Krueger.
It could mean many things. It implies as much a return of Captain America, sure, as it also implies my return to Marvel – and maybe some other things. But I can tell you that my ego wasn’t fueling the design of that image…
Of course he is being very cryptic in his interview without giving anything major away. It does look like this is an in continuity story, so we’ll have to wait and see what that means. To me the image evokes a phoenix rising from the ashes, and it looks like Bucky is by his side. I wonder if Marvel will go down the Dark Phoenix Captain America route, after all it worked before…

Or - “This Just In: Former Captain America Steve Rogers Is Still Dead…”

That joke courtesy of the 1970’s, a time when Chevy Chase was actually funny. Ed Brubaker seems to be following through on his promise to make this death meaningful in more than just a “When will he be back?” fashion. The effect of Steve’s loss on his friends and coworkers is profound, with some seeking redemption, some seeking vengeance, and at least one seeking an outlet for his profound sense of guilt. If you had asked me ten years ago if I thought we’d ever see Bucky again, I’d have called you crazy. But seeing Bucky back in a story where CAP is dead, and having that story not suck is pure gravy…

Or - “Continuing The Difficult Task Of Rebuilding A Sympathetic Anthony Stark…”

When Captain America #26 came out back in May, I complained about the fact that the story referenced the wonderful words that Sam Wilson (The Falcon, pictured above in his swingin’ 70’s green and gold original costume, complete with extra-groovy bird of prey medallion) said at Captain America’s funeral without actually telling us what those words were. Some have argued (Tom Grice among them) that this makes the moment more poignant by letting us all write our own eulogies, but part of me felt that it was short-changing the readers NOT to show it. Now, six or seven weeks later, the funeral of Steve Rogers is the centerpiece of this (rather late) issue, and the mysteries are revealed… but is it as inspiring as the characters indicated?

Well Captain America is still dead, and there are still a lot of characters who are plenty mad at Tony Stark for allowing this to happen. Marvel has sent Major Spoilers a sneak peek at Captain America #28.

Or - “Brubaker Broke Rule #1: Bucky Stays Dead.”

And yet, I enjoy it. I don’t know if it’s the fact that Cap himself is now deceased or if it’s just one of those ideas that is better in the execution than the conception, but so far, the return of James Buchanan Barnes has been very well handled. In the wake of the assassination of Captain America, the entire Marvel Universe looks like a whole new animal, and the Winter Soldier has set his sights on the biggest game of all: Tony Stark, Director of SHIELD. But before he gets to that particular bullet, he has an errand or two he wants to run…

Yeah, after the boner joke last week, I thought it best to show Marvel can make similar mistakes.

Or - “Do Not Fear Death So Much, But Rather The Inadequate Life…”

Berthold Brecht said that, and it serves as a pretty fitting epitaph for our Steve Rogers, as well as a cautionary tale. It works as warning to Tony Stark… as a cold comfort to Sharon Carter… as a benchmark for Sam Wilson. And for James Buchanan Barnes, it’s a horrible and isolating reminder that the most heartless cliché of them all is “It’s never too late.” The Marvel Universe is in mourning, but there’s still work to be done, and while nobody here seems to want the Adamantium shield, Captain America’s job is hardly done.

Or - “How To Really Over-Think Both The Title And The Concept.”

I don’t think there’s any question that Marvel intends for us to be morally bothered by the actions of Iron Man during and after the Civil War. Even with Joey Da Q’s constant reiteration of the mantra that “in the real world we’d want these people to be licensed and trained,” (an argument which is irrelevant, I might add) the actions of Iron Man are beyond reprehensible. This issue only serves to underline the fact that Tony Stark has officially gone around the bend, and it’s just a matter of time before someone has to take him down…

First he gets shot in the gut, then Captain America gets arrested with a burrito down his pants.
On Saturday night, when a costume party full of medical professionals stopped at On Tap Cafe, police said Doctor Raymond Adamcik, 54, had a burrito stuffed below the waistband of his costume and was asking women if they want to touch it. When one refused, he allegedly took out the burrito and groped her.
The woman called police and, when they arrived, the officers wrote in their report “there were so many cartoon characters in the bar at the time, all Captain America’s were asked to go outside for a possible identification.”
The woman pointed out Adamcik and the burrito was found in his boot. He was taken to the police station. There, while in a holding cell, police said, he asked to use the bathroom and tried to flush a joint, also hidden in his blue tights, down the toilet.
“The officer observed him try to flush something into the toilet. He tried to flush it. The officer was able to reach inside and grab part of what he tried to flush,” said Jill Frederiksen, Melbourne Police Department.
I wonder if everyone else at the party were also stuffing Mexican entrees down their pants. Remember kids, burritos are for eating, not sticking down your trousers in an attempt to impress the ladies. That’s what tube socks are for…not that I would know…
